Cracking Ohio’s political code!
October 28, 2008
To really understand Ohio, you need a far-reaching anthropological knowledge that few possess. Sometimes, people “get it.” This would most certainly include the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, now engaged in an all-out assault to win the state’s 20 electoral votes.

October 27, 2008
DL Hughley & David Allen Grier Put Comedy Spin on the News
Two brothers doing late night comedy with a spin on the news, naturally they are to be compared to Dave Chappelle. When there’s a first, there is always a next – if done right. For much of conscience Black America, “hated it” is the resounding echo after the premiere of both DL Hughley Breaks the News and of Chocolate News with David Allen Grier. Somehow Grier gets a pass because his show is on a comedy network – same network that launched the train wreck from which Dave Chappelle walked away.
In reading about the coming of these two new attractions, there is a slight whisper as to which of these brothers might be the next “Chappelle.” Let me tell you – looks like neither.
What we forget, Dave Chappelle walked way from buffoonery once he realized that was the agenda attached to his show by the real powers that be. Chappelle realized the true cost of $50M and said no thank you.
D.L. Hughley has always chased diversity to put it lightly. He wants a mainstream audience. Nothing wrong with that, but there’s a negative cost when you chase diversity as oppose to when it just naturally happens. As for as having an African American audience, Hughley is considered to have thrown Black America under the bus a few times, especially with his comments regarding the Rutgers Women incident.
We don’t all have to agree, however in watching the first episode of D.L. Hughley Breaks the News, African American who watched with us were “embarrassed,” and “disappointed” that Hughley wasn’t allowed to come from an intellectual standpoint. Ok you say he’s a comedian. To that, viewers in our unscientific twitter focus group said “the show wasn’t funny.” We struggled to get them to continue watching after the first segment. The numbers dwindled down to the final minutes of the show.
On the other hand, white females thought it was “entertaining and informative.” Well DL, there’s your demographic right there. They plan to watch it every Saturday. White males on the other hand are probably hopping they won’t get blamed for this too. They said they “wanted to like it.”
What should have tipped Black America off as to the desired demographic was Hughley’s appearance on Larry King which was the lead in to the show and aired several times. (Wait I need to stop laughing).
Still it’s a little confusing because during the breaks they aired commercials starring P Diddy. Thus begs the question, if African Americans were even slightly part of the desired demographic, what were they thinking? What’s CNN going to do now with this initial reaction. Was DL expecting to be the big baller this morning? Opps.
Does having a black host equal a black audience? Answer: not since Aresenio Hall and not unless you get it right. Hughley’s show got it wrong, according to public opinion. We’ve not yet held a viewing for David Allen Grier’s show on that comedy network; though some interjected the same sentiments while watching Hughley.
If Hughley & Grier want to follow in Chappelle’s footsteps… they need to do as he did and walk away.
