Cause for Concern? Bob Johnson Planning New TV Network

November 30, 2008

One has got to be every bit of concerned when you hear that Bob Johnson, founder of the B E T (Black Entertainment Television) Network wants to get back in television. After all society is still trying to figure out how to survive amongst a generation created in a ten (10) year span of ghetto hoeims and pimpology (ghp’s). For a time during the history of the long running network, ghp’s seemed to be the choice demographic.

However, when you think of the original B E T, Johnson re-entering television with a new network might be part of the paradigm shift a la “Obama.” The pros and despite the multitude of cons of B E T it has lasted through the decades, which means Johnson may be the man with the formula and let’s hope the correct mission in the new venture as reported by the source linked below.

Robert L. Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, has asked the Federal Communications Commission to approve plans for a new “urban” television network that would cater to a multicultural audience interested in health, lifestyle, education and other issues, a spokeswoman for Johnson told Journal-isms

The new network is “not intended to compete with BET or TV One,” Johnson spokeswoman Traci Otey Blunt said. Plans are open and no staff members have been hired, awaiting FCC approval. The network might even produce news programming, she said. The FCC is not expected to act until winter or early spring, after a period of public comment. Read more in Richard Princes Journal-ism column at mije.org

Now the period of “public comments,” means do not wait until the station is on the air to voice your opinion.  It will be interesting to see the network’s “urban” view on “health, lifestyle, education.” Keep in mind the definition of “urban” means “inside the city,” not necessarily African American.

SOBU Update: Tavis Invites “One” Blogger to Be A Web Star?

November 27, 2008

The Buzz… Is this an SOBU Lockout?

Tavis Smiley Invites Bloggers, Here Is Your Chance To Become A Web Star!

For the 10th annual State of the Black Union 2009 (SOBU) symposium, hosted and moderated annually by broadcaster Tavis Smiley, we’re offering the opportunity for ONE special blogger to sit on stage and ask the important questions of panelists in our first and exclusive live Webcast! http://www.tavistalks.com/sobu2009

One blogger to cover all of SOBU? The invitation, though well intended, missed the mark and has not gone over well with bloggers.  Before it blew out of proportion, DryerBuzz reached out to Tavis Smiley to try to bridge the apparent gap between bloggers.  Unfortunately, @TavisSmiley went quiet.

The Buzz… Behind the Buzz.

DryerBuzz.com — Yalanda Lattimore asked Tavis some time back if he was going to work with “Bloggers” for the 10th anniversary of SOBU by perhaps having a bloggers panel.(i.e. give bloggers press access; more importantly have a bloggers panel with bloggers who discuss the issues of Black America on the daily.)

We received a tweet back on twitter about the contest which later also arrived in email. When I read the details of the contest, says Yalanda, I twittered Smiley back that we needed to talk because he had it a little twisted.

Was I offended? No, I just think old school media and new media just don’t relate. The contest totally missed the mark. Since 2002 DryerBuzz.com has blogged about SOBU and certainly we noticed SOBU, as important as it is to the Black community was often absent in the headlines the following day.

Black bloggers, like historic black press, is our vehicle to keep and control our image in media. Not all bloggers are about “gossip” and “entertainment.” We take our community seriously. When Smiley asked for “legitimate news coverage” that’s where I felt offended. Often times many of our stories are only featured in “black” blogs. As well as many of our issues only make mainstream after blog coverage.

This year like every year, we will host our own coverage and online viewing of SOBU. And this year like every year we will see to it that the work is getting done, all year long, despite being locked out of covering SOBU.

Sometimes we make it even harder on ourselves in working with each other. Hell we may even show up in LA and host a bloggers panel like we requested Tavis do with SOBU. When you can’t “join ‘em” – pray for em.  SOBU needs to include a “bloggers panel.”
