Katrina Film: Attorney Jalene Mack Tackles Big Screen
Attorney Jalene Mack gives us the buzz… behind the buzz on returning to her home town of New Orleans for her big screen debut.
Houston, TX – After years of impressing the courtroom, prominent Houston attorney Jalene Mack will now command an audience of millions when she makes her big screen debut in the upcoming feature, “Hurricane Season” slated for release in 2009. Starring Forest Whitaker, Isaiah Washington, Taraji P. Henson, Bow Wow, Courtney B. Vance and Lil’ Wayne, “Hurricane Season” is a true life drama.
Buzz… behind the buzz:
Jalene Mack recalls filming a scene in the lower 9th Ward: ”My character Andrea and Momma Rose (Irma P. Hall) beg and plead with the authorities to stop their work upon discovering that Momma Rose’s house is being demolished by a contractor’s bulldozer ordered by the City of New Orleans as uninhabitable due to Hurricane Katrina damage.”
Mack was raised in New Orleans, “As a child, my mom and I weathered many Hurricanes and floods but of course nothing like Katrina. After seeing the continuous images on television and helping the evacuees at the Houston Astro Dome, I knew it would be a very teary-eyed, realistic, and emotional performance. On set, the entire production crew, contractors and environmentalists wore face masks not inhale any toxins that may be in the air almost three years later even.”
Hurricane Katrina took away most everything for many. The bulldozing of a 70 year old woman’s only remaining piece of ownership, a home, was symbolic on many fronts.
Filmed in Mack’s original hometown of New Orleans, the movie is based on the story of Al Collins, basketball coach for John Ehret High School in Marrero, LA, who led his Patriots to the state championship a year after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the school and displaced many of its students. Mack is cast in the role of Andrea Wall, mother of Christian (played by Eric D. Hill Jr.) one of the principal basketball players.
The busy attorney turned actress is currently back in Houston for martial arts training for her next film, “Elbows & Vogues” which recently just started production, starring Reagan Gomez and Gary Sturgis.
