Great Debates: Escape from Black America
January 13, 2009
Black America is about to become a distant memory. If you ask the next generation about Black America and race you’d get a common response “does it matter?” Does it matter if I choose not to live in a black neighborhood, attend a HBCU, or join the NAACP? January 20, 2009 the argument will be muted or is there a legitimate response to “does it matter?”
Black America is one of the many races rising up from a harsh history. However, Black America has yet to say never again. Perhaps we could say, never again but who “we” today in the “me” world.
We often ridicule Black leaders for not addressing “Black America.” One glorified chicken dinner after another, moving from hotel to hotel, social network to social network, we talk about its problems, looking for but not finding nor implementing a solution. January 20, 2009 – the day “Black America” will live in history. The escape route will be etched in history books. The world will know you can’t get there by going through Black America. Opportunity exists when taking the bypass – or escaping.
You can borrow from Black America. You can get rich on Black America. Black America will put you in the highest of office, but you owe nothing to Black America. Black America has no demands and will challenge itself on wanting better. Black America will live with and not challenge Black on Black crime. Is Black America history?
Black America once had leaders who challenged the powers that be, but they became bought and bossed. Today’s leaders are celebrities (judging by the media), many of whom made their escape from Black America.
January 20, 2009 young Black men will be encouraged to be the next. Their shinning glimmer of hope lies in the wake of change, if they bypass or escape Black America.
Black America Escapees – open any history book and you’ll see those considered “successful” their bypass is clearly outlined. Corporate leader – escapees; Oscar winners – escapees; politicians – escapees; educated – escapees; the list goes on – get your Google on.
Those who tried to go through soon found their demise or life and success stagnant or reaching a plateau. The constant reminders of those who lost their life for freedom brings little by way of inspiration to aspire to greatness to the point their contribution has cause the greatest debate.
