BlackFridayGiving.org Launches Online Initiative to Foster African American Giving

Sistributions, webmasters for DryerBuzz.com and affiliates, launches online initiative to bring visibility to African American charities, organizations, associations, and historic institutions.

“Too often we find these African American organizations, charities, and institutions in dire need of our contributions,” says Yalanda Lattimore editor of DryerBuzz.com online since 2002.  “By the time their message reaches the larger Diaspora, it is too late to assist and we see them vanish.”

With BlackFridayGiving.org, every Friday will become a day of giving as a reminder that we need to support each other.  Contributors of BlackFridayGiving.org are asked to make small consistent donations equal to that of a discount movie ticket to beneficiaries of their choice listed with BlackFridayGiving.org.

African Americans are said to have an unparalleled buying power, but when it comes to financially supporting our own communities, the spending does not compare.  BlackFridayGiving.org is not about recycling the dollar, this is about supporting institutions that support our communities whether we “need” them or not.

“When ever a black organization is in trouble, we quickly call on celebrities, athletes and the like to save them,” says Yalanda.  Hopefully, with BlackFridayGiving.org these organizations won’t see troubled days. We’re asking individuals and household to visit www.BlackFridayGiving.org, select one or more of the charities or organizations listed, then commit to contributing on a consistent basis in amounts they can afford to give regularly.

So that organizations can track giving from BlackFridayGiving.org, contributors are asked to contribute in increments of $8 (the cost of a discount movie ticket) in an amount they can give consistently on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis on Fridays. We’re turning “buying power” into real “power” our community should exhibit in 2009 by matching our spending to our giving.

The 1st BlackFridayGiving will take place Friday, February 20, 2009 when African Americans will spend at least $40 to $60 million dollars at the movies over a 3 day period.  Imagine the influx of this amount of cash into a struggling African American institution.  Tyler Perry, who has been very generous in donating to some of the same charities listed, will release his next blockbuster “Madea Goes to Jail.”  Perry himself recently donated $110,000 to an Atlanta homeless shelter.  Celebrities cannot do it all.

Through the online initiative, tens of thousands will see the movie on 1300 screens.  Many will match their ticket price giving to charities listed at BlackFridayGiving.org with a commitment to return and give again and again.
