Microenterprise Program Helps Atlanta Women Create Employment [cbww.org]
April 29, 2009
cbww.org - In light of massive layoffs battering the Georgia workforce, many women are finding themselves unable to provide for their families. The Women’s Economic Self-Sufficiency Program (WESSP) offered through the Center for Black Women’s Wellness (CBWW) is enabling Atlanta women to create their own jobs through a unique financial literacy and business development course.
The 17-week session is designed to help low- to moderate- income women in Atlanta develop a business idea and successfully lay the foundation to launch their own microenterprise. Defined as a business with five or fewer employees that require less than $35,000 in start-up capital, microenterprises represent the majority of U.S. businesses, yet without establishing the proper foundation, would-be entrepreneurs could find themselves mired in debt and stress. WESSP offers classes like How to Write a Business Plan, Pricing Products and Services, Bookkeeping and Taxes and Sales and Presentation Skills which are augmented by CBWW’s focus on the whole woman. Health and Wellness is promoted with referrals to CBWW’s on-site Safety Net Clinic for those who may not have insurance.
The next series of WESSP begins in August with information sessions and applications accepted in July.
