Buzzing the Blogs: Transracial Adoption: When the Parents are African American Parents & the Child is Caucasian (Source: mothertalkers.com)

April 26, 2009

mothertalkers.com — As an adoptive mother of Eastern European Jewish background (i.e. very pale skin) with children who were born in Guatemala, I am familiar with the look full of the question strangers are dying to (and sometimes do) ask me about my family: “Are those your kids?” and the assumption that my husband is Latino. However, once the stranger knows I’m their mother, the assumptions about my role with my children usually ends there. Not so when you are African American and your child is white. The roots of this reaction probably lies in racism and the history of African Americans in the US.

What’s Up with that Brother? How to Look Smooth in a Rough Job Market

April 26, 2009

According to the United States Department of Labor, the U.S. has lost 5.1 million jobs since the recession began, and unemployment rates for African American men swelled to 13.3 percent in February and March. Men seeking employment today need to treat the interview process like they do a close shave: There is little room for error, and if they go against the grain when they shouldn’t, they can get burned.

In a rough job market, it takes more than a foot in the door. More than a distinguished degree. More than a new suit. In fact, it might take all of these and more to land a new job. From the resume and manner of speech, to attire and grooming, men need to prepare for scrutiny from potential employers, job recruiters, and networking contacts alike.

Although there is no magic formula, the following tips and resources could help give a man a leg up on the competition when it comes to a job search:

1. Refine the resume. A resume should be more than a list of job positions and degrees. It should convey successes and contributions made to companies or organizations. Monster.com and TheLadders.com offer guidelines for resume writing, as does Men’s Health magazine in this straightforward advice: http://tinyurl.com/cs3n9z

2. Look the part. When you get your foot in the door, make sure it dons a freshly polished and well-soled shoe. Have shirts ironed with starch to make them crisp at the collar and cuffs. For ways to cut corners without cutting style, glance over “How to Look Like a Million Bucks For Under $200,” found at http://tinyurl.com/cyxudq

3. Put the best face forward. Make sure the beard shows no signs of razor burn or razor bumps. To eliminate and prevent such skin problems, use Bump Patrol Aftershave Treatment for two days leading up to an interview. Depending on skin type and condition, select from Extra-Strength, Original, or Sensitive formulas. It works within 48 hours — no if, ands, or bumps. www.bumppatrol.com

4. Comb over everything. Comb over the company’s marketing materials to prepare for the pitch, and then comb the hair for the meeting. Sounds obvious, but use a comb, not your fingers. It is not time to be casual. For those who prefer the bald look, eliminate chances of nicks and bumps by following the Bump Patrol Directional Shave Method; a demonstration is online at www.bumppatrol.com

5. Breathe easy. Breathe a sigh of relief when there is an appointment, and don’t forget to freshen your breath for the first face-to-face. Pop a Tic Tac or two. No gum. However, if halitosis is possibly a bigger problem, try these tips from the author of The Bad Breath Report: http://tinyurl.com/d6vjxo

6. Aspire to be Jerry Maguire. Make potential employers think, “You had me hello.” When you first meet, keep your head up, speak clearly, extend a well-groomed hand (clean nails, not shiny), and keep eye contact with your interviewer, the receptionist, and employees walking down the hall. The goal is to make a connection worth remembering and one worth calling back for a second interview.

For all the men who are looking for a new job in this tough time, the maker of Bump Patrol wishes a hearty “Go get ‘em, and keep it smooth!”

Post Obama: BET Now Seeks To Provide Quality Entertainment with New Brand Strategy

April 23, 2009

BET Networks Announces New Shows, a New Brand Strategy and a New Network at its 2009 Upfront Presentation – part press release, part commentary by y. lattimore

“Given the historic change our country has experienced, this is the perfect time for BET Networks to re-examine where we are as a company and what we can be for our audience,” said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BET Networks. “As the #1 African American media company in the world, we have a unique opportunity to make the world of our audience better and provide them with quality entertainment that speaks to where they are in their lives and where they want to go.

BET Networks reveals a new direction for the company. Not necessarily the high road. But not the low road either.   Coming off their first quarter, BET reports viewership up 10%.  Coulda, woulda, shoulda been more? America did celebrate its first African American family in the White House. However, through that time BET continued with negative and stereotypical programming.  It’s coverage of the election, inauguration and President Obama’s first 100 days in office has not been up to par.  Is that about to change?

BET is adding new shows, changing the treatment a bit. Nonetheless,  some of the returning shows may keep BET on the edge of “can’t get right” like Brothers To Brutha which has yet to show true redeeming value.  In this show the young performers appear more likely to be wrestlers (trying to find nice word) than singers.  Redemption is what’s missing from BET.  But redemption is a redeeming quality of another generation.

On the flip side, Sunday Best proves enjoyable. BET will be adding the follow shows:

THE MO’NIQUE SHOW, the network’s new nightly talk/variety show featuring the incomparable actress/comedienne;

CHANGING LANES, in partnership with The 909 Group and NASCAR Media Group, a unique and exciting series chronicling the search for the sport’s next generation of drivers;

CREWS CONTROL, a reality series about the life of talented actor Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris, Terminator Salvation), his wife Rebecca and their five kids;

MONICA: STILL STANDING, a new docu-drama following the GRAMMY(R) Award-winning artist as she balances raising a young family and making her comeback in the music industry; and

THE HOLLYWOOD TREATMENT, a powerful reality series that pairs celebrities with individuals looking to transform their lives.

BET Networks also will announce its new entertainment and music channel, CENTRIC.

This new network – aimed at today’s affluent, trend-setting, sophisticated African American adult – was created through the collective creative resources and expertise of BET Networks and MTV Networks, and is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2009 in nearly 45 million homes.

Programming offered on CENTRIC will include: KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES, which will follow the drama-filled lives of Houston’s high society; MODEL CITY, a series about young African American male models trying to make it in New York City; REAL LIFE DIVAS and LEADING MEN, profile shows about African American women and men who have impacted American culture; and URBAN LIVIN’, a chic lifestyle interior design show.

As BET changes its treatment and tweaks its lineup in preparation for their presentation to advertisers, the proof will be in our tv guides.  We’ll watch for the buzz behind the buzz.

Seeing Is Believing — An exploratory team is now forming to create an embodiment for the recognition of the unsung hero.  With a passion for community organizing and continued support for charitable organizations and foundations, Yalanda Lattimore and a developing team will bring to fruition “The Org Awards.”

The team will explore the boundaries and deciding factors as to how recognition will be giving to local or national unsung heroes.  A few of the deciding factors will cover if the awards will reach beyond the “Seeing is Believing” headlines of DryerBuzz; beyond Atlanta; or reach into the realm of social networking.  Another task now before the team is the selection process.

With the growth of and as a leader in social networks, the Internet will no doubt play a major role in all consideration.  As the process and vision become more clear and defined, updates for The Org Awards will located online at www.OrgAwards.org.

Daily Assault: Morning After Pill Just More Protection for Male Psyche?

April 23, 2009

It boggles the mind that we need such a level of science to make up for a simple act of male responsibility.  The dominate male psyche wants to be roam free and clear not deal with the consequences of their actions not even a day later.  Where is the science to allow for the same amount of blood flow to the brain and the groins?  That is the science we need to day. If we could work that magic, half the problems in the world might disappear.  It would certainly have a major impact on poverty. Surely its not a funding issue?  Borrow from the funding for hair lost research and  tax Viagra sales.

Since we have to prepare our young women for the worst.  Here comes the Morning After Pill now available to 17 year old girls.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The “morning-after pill” will be available without a prescription to women 17 and older, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday. The minimum age has been 18.

On March 23, a federal court ordered that Plan B, an emergency contraception pill, be made available over the counter to those 17 and up, the agency said in a statement on its Web site. The agency will not appeal that order, the statement said.

The morning-after pill — made by Duramed, a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals — is intended to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. It works by stopping ovulation and decreasing the chances that a fertilized egg will attach to the uterus. When used within 72 hours of unprotected sex, it can lower the risk of pregnancy by almost 90 percent, the maker says.

The morning after, left alone to her thoughts and her fears just 17 years old.  She just had unprotected sex. What are the chances she knows how close she is to ovulation.  How does she gauge whether or not the pill worked? Where is he now that science has taken care of his burden of responsibility.  OK so she doesn’t get pregnant, but she still just had unprotected sex with a person with whom she couldn’t negotiate condom use.
