The Color Complex: Are African-Americans Still Divided By Skin Color – talkblack.net
TalkBLACK to host Atlanta’s premier discussion group for African-American professionals the age-old topic of skin color.
“I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves, and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies, and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On the top of my list is age but it is only there because it starts with an “A.” The second is COLOR or shade; there is intelligence, size, sex, size of plantation, attitude of owner, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, east or west, north, south, have fine or coarse hair, or is tall or short.”
talkblack.net - These are the words of Willie Lynch, who in 1772 allegedly shared this plan with his fellow slave owners about how to best divide and control his African slaves. Do you think his “plan” is still in play? TalkBLACK, Atlanta’s premier discussion group for African-American professionals, plans to explore the age-old skin color issues that persist within our community. Our talk will cover…
- How we are still very divided by skin color (or are we?)
- The color divide as it relates to gender
- Is President Obama having an impact?
- Is First Lady Michelle having an impact?
- The roots of our skin color issues
- The role that mass media & pop culture plays in this phenomena
Join us for a thought-provoking discussion.
