In 1986, in response to the negative publicity regarding “the vanishing Black family,” Dorothy I. Height, Chair of the National Council of Negro Women, developed an idea for a positive, culturally-based event that would celebrate the enduring strengths and traditional values of the African American family.
Most importantly, this event would serve as a rallying point for government agencies, private and public sector institutions, corporations, community-based organizations, and families of all ethnicities to work together on solutions to the issues affecting families.
Saturday features the official Opening Ecumenical Prayer Breakfast, all-day themed pavilions which showcase celebrities, prominent experts, performing artists and product promotions. Pookie Ain’t Got a President To Negotiate Peace with Police
July 24, 2009
![]()
According to a recent release citing numbers from the census, Pookie may have voted in the last election victorious for now President Barack Obama. Pookie may have voted, but Pookie ain’t got a president to negotiate peace with police. At post time, the President is in the midst of diffusing his remarks on what has been considered to be a highly visible racial profiling case – Henry Louis Gates Jr vs Cambrige Police.
We often throw Pookie under the bus when we talk about issues concerning Black America. Don’t know if Pookie is ready for this one. Both the President and the Cambridge Police Department in deflecting attention away from themselves admit that racial profiling does exist in this country. However in the up-in-the-air case of Gates versus Cambridge, the three parties involved are about to get together and have a beer to settle it. Not sure if it will be reflected in the books, but Gates “disorderly conduct” has become two good men “overacting” as cited by the President.
Classim? A favor between one Harvard man to another? The victim being the Cambridge police officer? If one would recall, during the two years prior to the national election, then Senator Obama was asked a number of times about situations that might involve people like Pookie and it was always “no comment.” In fact, on the day of the Jena Six march, the then Senator flew not to Jena but to Atlanta to make an appearance at a political fund-raising party. A whole lot of Pookies are in Jena.
Don’t want the President to address Pookie nationally. Some folks might get a little up in arms. But since Pookie is very familiar with beer. We’ll be watching the meeting at the Whitehouse to see what brand brings about peace with police. Guess they are t not eating donuts any more. — y.lattimore, DryerBuzz.com

Twitter Me This: Gates vs Cambridge
July 24, 2009
At post time, we’re just a couple hours maybe beyond the Cambridge police department press conference where an apology to the police force was not demanded, but definitely highly suggested by several of the speakers – all white males. The afternoon press conference sparked the growing debate over the recent arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.
While the facts of the case still escape us, opinions lead the way in the high profile ordeal, mainly because the President of the United States commented on the case. Charges against Gates were dropped, but the case is not out of sight yet. Is the situation shaping up to become one of “reverse discrimination” in the new “post race” America? Will Gates or Obama apologize.
Well at post time President Obama is going LIVE. Follow the tweets below or click here.
Update: President Obama took to the mic in a quick briefing Friday (07.024.09) afternoon acknowledging he misspoke. The President was just off a call with the Officer in the situation. Obama may however receive more slack for not having spoken with Gates. Gates continues to speak through his attorney. The President joked about having the men over to the Whitehouse for a beer and conversation. Recordings of the actual incidents are still expected. It will be interesting to finally here the manner and tone Gates used in addressing the officer which subsequently resulted in his arrest.
Question: Is there an underlying classism issues in this case?
Twitter Me This: Repsonse To Black In America 2
July 24, 2009
Black In America parts one and two on CNN was suppose to create dialogue. It has and the dialogue continues. At DryerBuzz.com we did not watch the second part of the series for various reason – mainly because of the relationship between media and Black America. However we did watch the dialogue. It was amazing to see black people encounter black people who look just like them but they have no knowledge of their progress and the strides they are making every day. Since we check for black folk everyday, BIA was not a phenomenal experience for us as it was for some viewers. Follow the buzz in the tweets below.
