Twitter Me This: Gates vs Cambridge
At post time, we’re just a couple hours maybe beyond the Cambridge police department press conference where an apology to the police force was not demanded, but definitely highly suggested by several of the speakers – all white males. The afternoon press conference sparked the growing debate over the recent arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr.
While the facts of the case still escape us, opinions lead the way in the high profile ordeal, mainly because the President of the United States commented on the case. Charges against Gates were dropped, but the case is not out of sight yet. Is the situation shaping up to become one of “reverse discrimination” in the new “post race” America? Will Gates or Obama apologize.
Well at post time President Obama is going LIVE. Follow the tweets below or click here.
Update: President Obama took to the mic in a quick briefing Friday (07.024.09) afternoon acknowledging he misspoke. The President was just off a call with the Officer in the situation. Obama may however receive more slack for not having spoken with Gates. Gates continues to speak through his attorney. The President joked about having the men over to the Whitehouse for a beer and conversation. Recordings of the actual incidents are still expected. It will be interesting to finally here the manner and tone Gates used in addressing the officer which subsequently resulted in his arrest.
Question: Is there an underlying classism issues in this case?
