Buzzing the Blogs: Kimberly Garrison: Sizing up Mo’Nique | Philadelphia Daily News | 09/29/2009
September 30, 2009
A few weeks ago, [Kimberly Garrison] wrote a column defending Mo’Nique’s decision to lose some weight and improve her health that drew a lot of reader response, much of it negative.
“To set the record straight, I figured I’d go directly to the grand diva herself,” writes Garrison.
“Aside from her weight loss, I was also dying to ask her about her upcoming role in Philadelphian Lee Daniels’ movie “Precious,” based on the riveting novel “Push,” by Sapphire. I had heard through the grapevine that Mo’Nique delivers a stellar performance as the abusive mother of the title character.”

September 30, 2009
The Supreme Court agreed to hear Lewis v. City of Chicago, involving fair access to courts for employees who seek to vindicate their rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, our nation’s key safeguard against discrimination in the workplace.
“This case will determine whether job applicants that a court has determined are victims of discrimination will be denied an effective remedy,” said John Payton, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) President and Director-Counsel. “The Supreme Court should apply a common-sense reading of Title VII and hold that discrimination occurs each time an employer uses a selection practice that unfairly excludes qualified African American applicants for a job.”
