Van Jones on “the venal nature of Washington politics in the Internet era” – Shirley Sherrod and Me – NYTimes.com
July 25, 2010
Van Jones writes . . .
Our situations aren’t exactly the same. Ms. Sherrod’s comments, in which she, a black woman, appeared to admit to racial discrimination against a white couple, were taken far out of context, while I truly did use a vulgarity.
But the way we were treated is strikingly similar, and it reveals a lot about the venal nature of Washington politics in the Internet era. In my case, the media rushed to judgment so quickly that I was never able to make clear that the group put my name on its Web site without my permission. The group finally admitted that it never had my signature, but by then it was too late.
Fortunately, Ms. Sherrod has been offered a new job. But our stories offer cautionary tales to anyone interested in taking a job in national politics.

To Avoid Beer Summit Day – Pres @BarackObama to visit Chrysler GM in Michigan (dubbed The Great Beer State)
July 25, 2010
Beer Summit Day July 30 “An opportunity for us to listen to each other.” to quote President Barack Obama
JULY 30: Mugs of beer were consumed by U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Biden, Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley and Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates (whom Crowley arrested causing national attention) sit on a table in the Rose
“Last year, the president made a surprise appearance at a briefing to add…ress reporters regarding the controversy surrounding the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., even though White House officials had said he wouldn’t speak publicly about it.” reported by CNN
The President refused to do the same this year in an effort to distance himself from the growing controversy over Shirley Sherrod. However, the President did later speak with Sherrod.
We believe the President is open for change. While his schedule shows the President will travel to Michigan to visit Chrysler and General Motors Plants in Detroit and Hamtramck. Michigan has been dubbed “The Great Beer State,” according to the Michigan Brewers Guild in an article posted on the National Geographic Intelligent Travel. http://bit.ly/9HkksD
So here’s hoping the President will grab a cold one with America on July 30th. Let’s make diversity easier to swallow. Cheers!
