Undergraduate college student borrowing has risen dramatically in recent years

November 29, 2010

Undergraduate college student borrowing has risen dramatically in recent years. Graduates who received a bachelor’s degree in 2008 borrowed 50% more (in inflation-adjusted dollars) than their counterparts who graduated in 1996, while graduates who earned an associate’s degree or undergraduate certificate in 2008 borrowed more than twice what their counterparts in 1996 had borrowed, according to a new analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data by the Pew Research Center’s Social & Demographic Trends project.

Increased borrowing by college students has been driven by three trends:

  1. More college students are borrowing (read more)
  2. College students are borrowing more (read more)
  3. More college students are attending private for-profit schools, where levels and rates of borrowing are highest. (read more)

Inaugural Michelle O Brunch Holiday Event Connects Influencers in Brooklyn December 12th | Buzz4Women

November 29, 2010

On December 12th, the Inaugural Michelle O Brunch Holiday Event will connect influencers at the Rising Arts Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. Michelle O Brunch is a space that connects goal-directed, progressive and cosmopolitan black women in diverse sectors such as education, media, entertainment, and the arts and career stages from Intern to Senior Executive to Entrepreneur. The impetus for the first Michelle O Brunch in March 2009 was to honor Michelle Obama, the first African-American First Lady of the United States.

“In 2009, after witnessing the arrival of our first African-American U.S. First Lady at the President’s Inauguration, I was inspired to action,” says Chana Ewing, Founder of Michelle O Brunch, “I’m inspired by the life Michelle Obama has led and empowered by the presence she adds to the world stage. I knew that there were other such women – equally excited, inspired and determined to be as big and bold in their own endeavors.”

Michelle O Brunch nurtures community among 25-40 year old black women by facilitating friendship and professional relationship in a space where their voices and concerns will be heard and supported by their peers. Chana Ewing and the planning committee, known as the Chef’s Circle, have produced three brunches, have a growing online presence, and a mailing list of professional women in the NYC metropolitan area.

Buzzing Opinion: “Don’t Treat Sharpton Like Sherrod” Says Radio One CEO [OPINION] | News One

November 29, 2010

WASHINGTON - AUGUST 28: (L-R) Former New Orleans Mayor Marc Morial, Janet Murguia, president of La Raza and the Rev. Al Sharpton, lead a march through downtown on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s civil rights March on Washington on August 28, 2010 in Washington, DC. Thousands joined Sharpton for his 'Reclaim the Dream' rally to commemorate the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's famous 'I Have a Dream' speech. It also was counter-protest to a rally being held by Fox News conservative talk show host Glenn Beck in front of the Lincoln Memorial at the National Mall. (Photo by T.J. Kirkpatrick/Getty Images)

Instead, articles like these points to a growing pattern of unfair and exaggerated scrutiny of Black leaders.

What seems most newsworthy to the Daily News is that NAN paid Sharpton a salary of $250,000 last year, even as the organization was still paying off its tax debt. Despite their acknowledgment that Sharpton has been more generous than most, often donating his sizable speaking fees, and has forgone a salary for the past two years, the paper still led with the headline: “Tax Debt Doesn’t Stop Sharpton’s Salary.” [11/23/10].

So while the Daily News touted that Sharpton paid himself $250k while NAN is in the red, the undisputed facts are that Rev. Sharpton only received a net of $50k because the NY Daily News intentionally left out the fact that Rev. Sharpton had recently loaned almost his entire salary to NAN. Similar to what was done to Shirley Sherrod who became a sacrificial lamb when reckless charges were made against her by a blogger who posted a misleading and highly edited video of her and recklessly charged her with racism, Rev. Sharpton was disparaged by the Daily News who printed distorted and misleading information about his finances even after Rev. Sharpton went to meticulous extents to make sure the writer had all the facts. (Neither the writer or editor of the article were available for comment.)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Leslie Nielsen, who went from drama to inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in “Airplane!” and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in “The Naked Gun” comedies, has died. He was 84.

His agent John S. Kelly says Nielsen died Sunday at a hospital near his home in Ft. Lauderdale where he was being treated for pneumonia.

The Canadian-born Nielsen came to Hollywood in the mid-1950s after performing in 150 live television dramas in New York. With a craggily handsome face, blond hair and 6-foot-2 height, he seemed ideal for a movie leading man.
