Great Debates LIVE: What’s up with that Brother in Media (and Education): Has he changed his story? | DryerBuzz.com

November 24, 2010

With Americans spending more time following the news, and digital platforms playing a larger role in news consumption as reported by Pew Research Center, the time is now to impact perception and change the way we look . . . at life. We have our bases covered when it comes to traditional media such as print, TV, and Radio and with the playing field level in new media, but are we changing the game?  From citizens to lawmakers, we are all impacted by what we see in media.  Seeing is believing.  Believe that.

When cell phones, email, social networks and podcasts are added in, 44% of Americans say they got news through one or more internet or mobile digital source yesterday. Read More via Americans Spending More Time Following the News

Now factor in the number of minorities delivering the news.  Has the story transformed? Or is it still one sided, strongly bias, and spun in one direction?  How does minorities in media, African American males in particular, impact our sons? Plus we’ll hear how brothers are impacting education.

For Chike Akua and L. Kobie Wilkerson, the Black male graduation rate in America is absolutely unacceptable. Several months ago The Schott Foundation released its report finding that the national graduation rate for Black males was a lowly 47%, nationally. “It’s unacceptable, given what we know about what it takes for our children to achieve and succeed,” says Akua, an author and former Teacher of the Year who trains teachers on how to increase student achievement, especially African Americans. Akua and Wilkerson have partnered to make the Teacher Transformation Institute the premiere professional development conference for teachers who want to reach African American students.  Read more via Two Male Educators Take Matters Into Their Own Hands | Teacher Transformation Institute

U.S. condemns N.Korean shelling, shows restraint | Reuters

November 23, 2010

North Korea fired dozens of artillery shells at the island in one of the heaviest bombardments on the South since the Korean War ended in 1953, sharply increasing tensions on the divided peninsula.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who was awoken in the early hours of Tuesday for an emergency briefing, was due to speak with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

“North Korea has a pattern of doing things that are provocative. This is a particularly outrageous act,” Burton told reporters on board Air Force One as Obama headed to Indiana to visit an auto plant.

It was unclear how the United States, which has 28,000 troops in South Korea, might respond. After blaming the North for sinking a South Korean warship in March, it ramped up joint military exercises with Seoul but refrained from retaliation.
