TV One Unsung — There may never be a more soulful, sexy, funky combination of voice and music like that which emanates from the “Ivory Queen of Soul,” Teena Marie. Her phenomenal range and unique tone has made her among the most recognizable voices in R&B. At the age of 17, Teena fulfilled her childhood dream of a music career when she signed with Motown Records. There, she teamed up musically – and for a time, romantically – with funk master Rick James, who produced her debut album, Wild and Peaceful. A hit song with James, Fire and Desire, along with Teena’s robust sound and powerful delivery, helped to overcome long standing racial barriers between black audiences and white singers. Teena talks about leaving Motown at the height of her career, losing her long-time friend Rick James and her fight to take control of her life. TVOnline.com Unsung

Two Chicago firefighters killed and more than a dozen injured | Chicago | Reuters
December 22, 2010
Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford confirmed the deaths. Firefighters are searching the rubble for people who may have taken shelter in the abandoned one-story structure.
“At this time we’re still taking the building apart to see if there were any homeless people in the building,” Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff told reporters.
“The fire had been knocked down and they were overhauling the hot spots,” Hoff said. “In wintertime people search for shelter so we always go in there to look for homeless or shelters and that’s what the (firefighters) were doing when the roof let loose.”
Wednesday marks the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Union Stock Yards fire that killed 21 firefighters.

The Cut with that Brother? PBS Host Tavis Smiley To Moderate Conversation on Recovering America’s Greatness | January 13, 2011
December 21, 2010
Two costly ongoing wars, a fledging economy, a failing educational system, and job losses have Americans worried not only about the fate of the country but its legacy as a global leader. This January, broadcaster Tavis Smiley will convene a panel of thought leaders to wrestle with how America can return to its greatness.
“We are all aware of the challenges we face in our country. In fact, many other countries are facing some of the same economic and social issues. But what’s striking for some of us is the slide in our global standing. On so many indicators we are lagging behind where we were once considered a front runner,” said Smiley.
The nationally televised discussion, America’s Next Chapter, will be held from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St. NW, Washington, D.C. The event is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is requested at www.americasnextchapter.com.
The event will broadcast LIVE on C-SPAN Thursday, January 13. The conversation will rebroadcast for three nights on Tavis Smiley on PBS beginning Tuesday, January 18 through Thursday, January 20. The conversation will continue during The Tavis Smiley Show and Smiley & West from PRI (Public Radio International).

What’s Up with that Brother? Tyler Perry Saves Local Atlanta Organization With A $14,000 Christmas Present | Follow the Buzz
December 21, 2010
Actor/writer/producer Tyler Perry has stepped forward to match an anonymous $14,000 donation that will save BE SOMEONE – a local struggling organization that helps at-risk youth by teaching them life skills through the game of chess. Their youth center had a December 31st deadline to make critical construction improvements which, if not completed, would have likely led to its closing. Perry initially asked to remain anonymous, but was swayed to go public to show solidarity and support for the program.
“We are training champions here at BE SOMEONE and Mr. Perry has been our champion today,” said Orrin Hudson, the organization’s founder. “We are incredibly grateful and humbled by his tremendous gift, as well as those of our other donors. I never lost faith that God moves mountains and once again I have seen how good people are called to come forward to assist in this life-changing work.”
