QuickBuzz: Will.i.am Launches Will.i.apps, Kills the Album | Black Web 2.0

January 24, 2011

Love them or hate them, the Black Eye Peas are on some other stuff when it comes to their creativity. Their new iPhone application takes things well beyond the average app. Not only can you listen to their music and follow their tweets, but you can actually interact with the band members in a 3D virtual world. Most interesting is their 3D video, which puts you in the middle of the action.

Discover “What Inspires You in Atlanta” | Black History Month | MyATLevents

January 24, 2011

We’re Spreading the buzz.  Start Living Atlanta Style. . .  a message from the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau

During Black History Month, the streets, museums and theaters of Atlanta will come alive with events that tell these stories of bravery:

  • “Africa’s Origins Africa’s History in a Name” at Emory University’s Robert Woodruff Library features rare photographs of Africans freed from slaving vessels, alongside nineteenth-century registers documenting liberated African’s names. Closes Feb. 12.
  • True Colors Theatre Company’s “Broke-ology” investigates the science of being broke. Starring Jasmine Guy, and directed by Kenny Leon, the play follows the King family as they learn to sacrifice and stay together. “Broke-ology” opens on Jan. 28.
  • The whole family can learn about African culture at Imagine It: The Children’s Museum of Atlanta where “From Here to Timbuktu: A Journey Through West Africa” takes center stage from Feb. 5 – May 30.
  • At the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to Atlanta for Artistic Director Judith Jameson’s final year. Guests will enjoy new productions, repertory favorites and Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations at all five performances. The show runs from Feb. 10-13.
  • Enjoy an evening of Jazz (America’s only indigenous art form) at the Ferst Center with the soothing sounds of The John Faddis Jazz Orchestra during “An Evening of Ellington” on Feb. 12.
  • Learn “How to Honor your African American Ancestors by Tracing, Documenting, Publishing, and Donating Your Family History” at the Atlanta History Center on Saturday, Feb. 19.
  • Before Black Power emerged to give a name to black dissent from the mainstream civil rights agenda, African Americans in Atlanta questioned the meaning of equality and sought the steps to share in the American dream. Learn all about it at a lecture called “Courage to Dissent: Atlanta and the Long History of the Civil Rights Movement” on Feb. 26 at the Atlanta History Center.
  • The Sweet Auburn District, where Martin Luther King Jr. was born, raised and preached, comes alive with a Black History Month Parade on Feb. 26.
  • For music lovers, there’s plenty of jazz to enjoy during Black History Month. At 85, the eternally youthful Roy Haynes is the very definition of a living legend of jazz. See him and the Fountain of Youth Band perform at the Rialto Center for the Arts on Feb. 26.

Visitors can also enter to win a chance to explore Atlanta’s Civil Rights Legacy first hand with the “What Inspires You in Atlanta” contest. Visit www.atlanta.net/civilrights2011 and fill out an official entry form before Feb. 22 to win:

Somewhere in the 600 or so miles between this mountain town, host to the Sundance Film Festival, and the movie factories of Hollywood, female filmmakers seem to vanish.

Of the top 100 movies at the 2010 box office, three were made by women: “The Last Song” (No. 51), “Nanny McPhee Returns” (96) and “Ramona and Beezus”(100.) Meanwhile, 27 of the 117 features playing at this year’s festival have female directors.
