February 27, 2011
Seeing is Believing — Birmingham film maker and photographer Pogus Caesar knows Handsworth well. He found himself in the centre of the 1985 riots and spent two days capturing a series of startling images. Caesar kept them hidden for 20 years. Why? And how does he see Handsworth now?.
The stark black and white photographs featured in the film provide a rare, valuable and historical record of the raw emotion, heartbreak and violence that unfolded during those dark and fateful days in September 1985.

February 24, 2011
What’s Up with that Brother ! — The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center for the 3rd Annual African-American Men’s Health Empowerment Summit & Job Fair. Bill J. Releford, the event’s founder, will be joined by former Los Angeles Lakers’ guard Norm Nixon at the summit in drawing attention to health disparities in black men. The event is scheduled for Feb. 26, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“The need to address health care disparities in African American men is paramount in light of the fact they have the lowest life expectancy of any group in the U.S.,” Dr. Releford says. He hopes more than 3,000 men will be screened for cardiovascular disease and educated on prostrate cancer during the event.
A day of live entertainment, seminars, and FREE screenings for diabetes, high blood pressure, prostate cancer, cholesterol, HIV and dental has been planned. Qualigen, a partnering company of the black barbershop program, will employ rapid prostrate tests, providing results within 10 minutes. Others include: the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Novartis, Eli Lilly, County of Los Angeles, Cardiocheck, LifeClinic, Qualigen, PhRMA, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Dada Shoes.
