The Cut with that Brother! Jazz Saxophonist Dee Lucas Joins the Ranks of Great Legends & Performs at Blue Note Jazz Club | Follow that Jazz

March 31, 2011

Dee-lucas-head-shot_sm

Make It Happen Entertainment, in association with the Blue Note Jazz  Club, is proud to welcome Jazz Saxophonist Dee Lucas to join the ranks of great jazz musicians performing at the Blue Note Jazz Club.  Lucas will make his live performance at the Late Night Groove Series at the world’s famous Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City on Saturday, April 2, 2011. Tickets are $15 and showtime is 12:30 a.m.  Blue Note Jazz Club is located between 6th and McDougal St.  For ticket information, please call (212) 475-8592.

“It is truly such an honor to be performing at such a prestigious landmark as the Blue Note Jazz Club because many jazz legends that have come before me made their mark in this venue.  Both past and present jazz giants created the Blue Note Jazz Club to what it is today, and I am very gracious to be in good company with them,” says Lucas.  The Blue Note Jazz Club has become one of the premier jazz clubs in the world and a cultural institution in Greenwich Village. Owner and founder Danny Bensusan had a vision to create a jazz club in Greenwich Village that would treat deserving artists with respect, while allowing patrons to see the world’s finest jazz musicians in a close, comfortable setting. Artists who had stopped playing in jazz clubs decades before, such as Sarah Vaughn, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Turrentine, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Tito Puente, soon called Blue Note home.  After twenty-five years of success, Blue Note continues to carry the torch for jazz into the 21st century in the cultural heart of New York, Greenwich Village.

Lucas, a self-taught 42-year-old Atlanta-based artist didn’t pick up the sax until the age of 28. However, as a child growing up he always dreamed of being a musician, but instead he pursued sports due to financial constraints. He first came to prominence in 2004 with his debut CD, Remembrance, which is a tribute to legendary saxophonist George Howard.  Since his well-received debut, Lucas has been greeted with stunning reviews, garnered extensive airplay and consistently climbed charts and branded his timeless sound in the smooth jazz market.  He developed his distinctive style by collaborating urban funk sounds to smooth melodic that is both relaxing and soothing to the ear.  In 2007, his sophomore CD, Something to Ride 2 received heavy rotation in many smooth jazz markets with the Herbie Hancock classic “Chameleon”, which peaked at #10 on the Smoothjazz.com “Top 50 Indie Charts”.

His recently released CD, Standing Room Only, is climbing the charts and receiving international radio promotion. With great songs such as the title track “Standing Room Only”, “Tiffany’s World” and “Keep Knocking”, this nine song, smooth sounding compilation has received airplay from numerous internet and satellite radio stations worldwide.  “Standing Room Only” is the current single and title from his latest CD and was produced by bassist Lee Hurst. “I wrote this song in collaboration with Lee with an ‘atmospheric’ attitude in mind.  I wanted a record with high energy, yet, smooth enough for any environment to embrace.  I think the record is ‘house-driven’ which gives it a world sound.  That’s the direction I would like to continue penetrating as an artist.  Not just a contemporary jazz artist, but a world artist,” says Lucas. “Tiffany’s World” is a ballad written for his daughter.  Written by talented pianist Drea, “Tiffany’s World” is a journey of Lucas’ daughter who was born three months premature.  It describes her struggles during the initial 58 days in the neonatal intensive care unit to her happy arrival at home. “Keep Knocking” is a testimony of perseverance, inspiring others not to give up in life. Produced by drummer PJ Spraggins, Lucas says, “I co-wrote this song with him definitely for the contemporary jazz lovers but thinking slightly outside the box melodically.  It’s definitely a record I will quite often perform in a live setting.”

“My new CD is special because it offers a wide array of styles coming from various producers pushing the envelope in contemporary jazz. The end result forces me to continue growing as an artist and deliver fresh music for my fans,” says Lucas.

Hair She Goes! Human Hair Express (hhē) Changes Face of Black Beauty | Follow the Cut with that Brother!

March 30, 2011

In the recordable history of the multi billion dollar ethnic hair and beauty product category, the staggering numbers continually reveal a disproportionate ownership share in the African-American community. While companies like Luster and Bronner Brothers have settled into a comfortable niche in the market place, the opportunity for new beauty brands, owned by African-Americans has mostly been underdeveloped. In the first quarter of 2010, two childhood friends, Robert Errold Scott and Irving Buissereth, both with entrepreneurial spirits and a respect for the culture’s most precious resource- its women-decided to change those statistics. In November 2010 Scott and Buissereth decided to add another partner, Maurice Moore, to make their company the dynamo the young entrepreneurs envisioned.

After decades of watching mothers, aunts, cousins, sisters and significant others spend hours in beauty salons, hair stores and in front of mirrors, Robert Errold Scott, Maurice Moore and Irving Buissereth solidified a plan anchored by a mission and made the ultimate investment in the future of the African-American community at large.

Not content with sourcing the finest in luxury virgin wefted hair pieces, the trio, known as “The Triangle Offense” emerged from their industry think tank with a mission to lead the community by example in the ways of self-empowerment and to ultimately eradicate the “B” word from the vocabulary of the community. Notes founder Robert Errold Scott, “We are not just three guys selling hair. We have developed the hhē line through innovation, diligence and faith. Our initial line of products set the tone for our standard of quality both in business and in the community as a whole”.

Human Hair Express, or hhē (pronounced as the pronoun “he”) launches this month on a national beauty tour making stops in all major markets for beauty trade shows, speaking engagements and its newly branded salon series “Tequila and Tresses” sponsored by award winning spirit brand Don Tepo and a national Urban lifestyle publication.

After #TheGame Season Finale on BET Will Fans Demand It Back Again | Win or Lost?

March 29, 2011

“During the finale, viewers will be left on the edge of their seats as the repercussions of Malik’s actions continue to haunt him: his girlfriend, Jenna, refuses to take him back and the Sabers court a new quarterback to replace him.  Meanwhile, Melanie and Derwin visit a fertility specialist to work towards expanding their family after unsuccessful attempts to get pregnant and Tasha Mack is devastated after an encounter with her dying ex-boyfriend.” (from BET)

Sounds highly unfamiliar right?  That’s what #theGame has come to in its first season in the hands of BET.  Yes the show had “7.7 million total viewers on its cable television premiere,” but wt# happened from there? #TheGame was suppose to own Tuesday nights.

Girl Melanie is pushing the nerves of viewers so bad; we’re hoping she doesn’t get knocked up by Derwin. What do you mean she is not a practicing doctor.  Med School has become bed school spending most of her time in the kitchen for the sun beams? Say it ain’t so. Tasha Mack is so whack right now.  She would never let Malik get to such a level of destruction.  And why is Mack not the CEO of her own sports and entertainment empire?  Is that too big of a dream for BET? Having her own would have been a great way to induce more personality appearances into the show.

The only truly recognizable character since the transfer to BET is Jason.  He has same quick wit and best lines of the show.  BTW BET also found some way to introduce a bullet flying scene.  Stop the madness. I digress on the hot mess and ask the question, will fans demand it back again? How would you call it — win or lost?

QuickBuzz: Twitter Still Dominated By Noisy Minority, Study Finds | Follow the Buzz

March 29, 2011

Though Twitter has around 200 million users, the report found that 50% of tweets (there are around 140 million sent each day) are generated by 20,000 “elite” users, or less than .05% of all users. A 2009 Harvard study drew a similar conclusion, reporting that just 10% of Twitter’s users produced 90% of the service’s tweets.

The Cornell/Yahoo! Research study also found that the lifespan of tweets varies by user category, noting that this can be explained by the type of content that the differing users tend to post to Twitter:
