Hair She Goes! Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon parents of twins | The Associated Press
April 30, 2011
NEW YORK (AP) — Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon celebrated their fourth anniversary with another milestone — becoming parents to a baby girl and boy.
Carey’s representative, Cindi Berger, confirmed the births to The Associated Press. The singing superstar gave birth Saturday at 12:07 p.m. EDT at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles. Berger says the baby girl was born first, weighing 5 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 18 inches long; her brother was next, at 5 pounds 6 ounces, and was 19 inches.
Berger says the couple has not named the children yet. Cannon drove Carey to the hospital in their Rolls-Royce Phantom. Berger said the 41-year-old Carey, who had gone through false labor, was calm, thinking that it was another false alarm.

The Clippings: African-American Pastors Unite to Revive Marriage and Fatherhood | Call to Action For Black Church
April 28, 2011
Group Issues “Call to Action” for the Black Church to Ignite New Social Movement
Maryland — An interdenominational group of African-American pastors has united to ignite a movement to renew marriage and fatherhood in the African-American community. The movement, led by 10 pastors in partnership with National Fatherhood Initiative, Urban Ministries, Inc., and The National Center on African American Marriages and Parenting, has been initiated by a “Call to Action,” which educates and inspires the black church to address the declines in marriage and father involvement that plague the black community. Clergy around the country will be recruited to sign the Call to Action, indicating their desire to join the movement to reverse these destructive trends. Since the 1960s, marriage and fatherhood have declined faster in the black community than in the rest of the population. In 1970, seven out of 10 African Americans between the ages of 20 and 54 were married; today, just four in 10 are (compared to nearly six in 10 in the general population). Today, one in three children in the country live apart from their biological fathers, but two of three African American children do. Roland C. Warren, president of National Fatherhood Initiative, said, “It is no coincidence that while the state of the black family has declined, that the state of the black community – in terms of poverty, incarceration, school failure, and other measures – has also deteriorated. Marriage and fatherhood must be renewed in order for these problems to be reversed.” Through the Call to Action, the pastors are calling upon their fellow African-American clergy to take on these five broad strategies: acknowledge and eliminate the barriers to promoting marriage and fatherhood in the church; be a voice and a guide for God’s plan for marriage, fathers, and families; advocate for strong marriages and help others to enjoy them; help and encourage men to be the fathers their children need; and enlist and guide the community in strengthening marriages, fathers, and families. The Call to Action provides several specific tactics for each of the five strategies and will be distributed nationally to clergy, along with a Pastors’ Toolkit containing sermon notes and information about programs provided by the movement’s partners. The leaders and founding signatories of the Call to Action are: Edwin Bass, Founder and Senior Pastor, The Empowered Church (Church of God in Christ) and President of COGIC Urban Initiatives, Inc., St. Louis, MO; Alex Gee, Founder and Senior Pastor, Fountain of Life Family Worship Center, Madison, WI; David Guy, Associate Pastor, Life International, Research Triangle Park, NC; Rob Harrison, Founder and President, 4ever Marriages & Families; Ray Johnson, Senior Pastor, Calvary Revival Church Peninsula, Newport News, VA; Bernie Miller, Founder and Pastor, New Covenant Fellowship Church, Chattanooga, TN; Johnny Parker, Men’s Ministry Director, First Baptist Church, Glenarden, MD; John Penton, Founder and Pastor, Greater Roosevelt Heights Church, Tacoma, WA; Clarence Shuler, President and CEO, Building Lasting Relationships; and Sherman Strong, Pastor, Restoration Temple (Church Of God in Christ), St. Louis, MO. Got Buzz – Pitch it http://Pitch.DryerBuzz.comThe Clippings: New Website to Trace Origins of Enslaved Africans | african-origins.org
April 28, 2011
Volunteer Assistance Sought from Africans, African Diaspora, Scholars Worldwide
Little is known of the ancestry of Africans pulled into the trans-Atlantic slave trade. A new website, launched at Emory University this week, aims to change that. The African-Origins (http://www.african-origins.org) website provides a rare glimpse of the identities of Africans aboard early nineteenth-century slaving vessels, and through this information, the possibility of tracing the origins of millions of other Africans forcibly transported to the Americas. Public participation will be critical to piecing together this missing history.
Visitors to African-Origins can search an online database of Africans liberated from slaving vessels, with such details as gender, age, African port of departure, and, most importantly, an African name. Because names used within African languages and social groups have remained fairly consistent over the last two centuries, the thousands of names listed in this database are clues to the linguistic and ethnic origins of the Africans on board these vessels.
Scholars are now looking for help in identifying the modern counterparts of these names and the languages and ethnicities with which they are likely associated. Through the African-Origins website, those with knowledge of African languages and cultural naming practices can suggest these links. By taking a few minutes to search and listen for familiar names and contribute a modern counterpart, language, and ethnic group, members of the public can help identify the language, ethnic and geographic origins of people listed in these registers, and subsequently the likely origins of millions of other unnamed Africans enslaved during this period.
With these insights, scholars serving as editors of the database can consider the range of possible languages and groups affiliated with a name alongside historical research of peoples’ locations and movements across Africa. As contributions are received and analyzed, new information will be added to the African-Origins database on the likely language and ethnicity of each individual. Visitors to the site will eventually be able to search for Africans by linguistic group and view maps of the historical locations of people pulled into the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

April 28, 2011
The Clippings –On April 27, 2011 over 3,500 students at eight (8) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) — Clark Atlanta University, Coppin State University, Howard University, Lemoyne-Owen College, Morehouse College, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University and Prairie View A&M University—will participate in the 3rd Denim Day at HBCUs. The HBCU movement for Denim Day is organized by Ending Violence Against Women (EVAW): The HBCU Project, an initiative funded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health and The Wright Group.
The Wright Group and EVAW are sponsors of Denim Day in USA 2011. Denim Day is a project of Peace Over Violence—a non-profit, feminist, multicultural, volunteer organization dedicated to building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence. Denim Day was launched in 1999, in protest of an Italian High Court ruling that overturned a rape conviction because the victim was wearing “tight” jeans. “Today there is a movement of African American students who visibly stand united as one HBCU campus for Denim Day, recognizing their role as champions for survivors in eliminating shame, stigma and blame– one fellow student at a time,” said Amelia Cobb, Director of Ending Violence Against Women. This week 3,500 students have signed-up to join the movement this year by wearing jeans and a Denim Day at HBCUs T-Shirt as a visible sign to support ending sexual violence on college campuses. Hair She Goes! SisterLove Inc Partners in Atlanta Working to Find a Safe & Effective HIV Vaccine | sisterlove.org
April 27, 2011
SisterLove, Inc., founded in July of 1989, can trace it’s beginnings to a volunteer group of women interested in educating Atlanta, and especially communities of women, about AIDS prevention, self-help and safer sex techniques.
With a personal understanding of the barriers that kept women out of the forefront of HIV/AIDS education and treatment, Dázon Dixon Diallo initiated a collaboration with a local women’s organization to improve access for all women and especially those of color. In 1987, the Women’s AIDS Prevention Project (WAPP) was formed.
SisterLove is on a mission to eradicate the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS and other reproductive health challenges upon women and their families through education, prevention, support and human rights advocacy in the United States and around the world.
