The Cut with that Brother! John H. Johnson Founder of Ebony/Jet Latest Inductee In Black Heritage Stamp Series

July 21, 2011

Johnhjohnsonstamp_sm

The Postal Service continues its sneak peek at some of its 2012 stamps, using social media outlets to preview the 2012 Black Heritage Stamp honoring legendary publisher John H. Johnson.

“We are proud to immortalize John H. Johnson as our latest inductee in our Black Heritage stamp series,” said Stephen Kearney, manager, Stamp Services. “He was the trailblazing publisher of Ebony, Jet  as well as an entrepreneur. In 1982, he became the first black person to appear on Forbes magazine’s annual list of the 400 wealthiest people in America. His magazines portrayed black people positively at a time when such representation was rare, and he played an important role in the civil rights movement. President Clinton awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996.”

The stamp, designed by art director Howard Paine, features a color photograph of John H. Johnson taken by Bachrach Studios. The photographer was David McCann.

The Postal Service has recognized the achievements of prominent African Americans through the Black Heritage series since 1978. The series highlights outstanding individuals who helped shape American culture.

Other 2012 Forever stamps previewed this week were the 2012 Cherry Blossoms Centennial, the Edgar Rice Burroughs and Love Ribbons stamps.

The Clippings: An Open Letter to the President from Hispanic Farmers

July 21, 2011

The following is a letter from Hispanic Farmers & Ranchers Inc. and Minority Agricultural Producers to President Obama:

Sir,

As you address La Raza, Hispanics and Hispanic farmers and ranchers are paying attention to how rhetoric relates to reality.  Here is our reality:

  • Your Administration has deported more Hispanics than the Bush Administration;
  • provided black farmers, who missed the opportunity to participate in the initial black farmers’ settlement, a less favorable settlement than the Clinton Administration’s black farmers’ settlement;
  • refused to provide Hispanic farmers a settlement as good as the inferior settlement provided to black farmers in their second round of settlements, despite the undisputed fact that black and Hispanic farmers have suffered the same discrimination.

Your Administration offers Hispanic farmers a dual track alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) process that provides up to $50,000 and a flat $50,000, respectively.  The Clinton Administration offered black farmers an ADR process that provided them $50,000 and unlimited damages that could be proven (the largest amount is approximately $13 million).  Your Administration has offered black farmers, on their second round of settlements, an ADR process that provides up to $50,000 and $250,000, respectively and an identical claims process for Native American farmers.  While USDA spokesman recently stated that the settlement offered to Hispanic farmers is “at relative parity” with those settlements, Mr. President, $50,000, $13,000,000 and $250,000 do not reflect “relative parity.”

As a former constitutional law professor, you know the federal government cannot, consistent with the constitutional guarantees of equal protection and due process, pick favorites among minority groups, yet it has done just that, providing black farmers a more favorable claims process than the one provided Hispanic farmers.  If your Administration believes that it can disrespect Hispanics in this way while offering a few platitudes about universal immigration reform and the Dream Act because we have no political alternative, it did not learn the lesson of the mid-term elections.

We do not seek special treatment, merely simple justice.  Accordingly, we urge you to direct Attorney General Holder to withdraw the current discriminatory settlement proposal for Hispanic and female farmers and begin immediately good faith negotiations with our attorneys to provide us a just settlement process. It is the only fair way forward.

Respectfully,

Lupe Garcia, President

Hispanic Farmers & Ranchers Inc.

David Cantu, President

Minority Agricultural Producers

Hair She Goes! Lady In Waiting: Doing the best I can with what I have! Christ Centered Stewardship! | Victoria L. Burse

July 21, 2011

Burse_28_small_p

The word of God admonishes that we are to be good stewards of our time, our talents, and our treasures.  Well, what does stewardship mean?  Stewardship is defined as follows: administrator, attendant.  Some synonyms for this word are: custodian, keeper, trustee, even servant.  Well I ask you, which of these denotes ownership.  The answer is None of the above.  Actually, they all denote a place of one who is taking care of something which belongs to someone else.

I wonder if we have forgotten the words of the old Christian song, All that I own belongs to Jesus. They are very simple, yet very profound.  You see, all we have belongs to Him.  This includes our material possessions, jobs, homes, cars, money, etc…Our physical bodies, our children.  Spiritually, it includes our hearts and minds, and emotions.  Everything, everything belongs to Jesus.

Well what then does that say for ownership, the American dream,  or being an entrepreneur – owning your own business?

The Clippings: Walmart to Open up to 300 Stores Serving USDA Food Deserts by 2016 | Jobs Food Health

July 20, 2011

Walmart announced today that it will open between 275-300 stores serving the Department of Agriculture (USDA) designated food desert areas between now and 2016. These estimates are based on the company’s current real estate plans. These stores, in both urban and rural areas, will provide access to groceries for more than 800,000 people living in food deserts. Walmart made the announcement at the White House today with First Lady Michelle Obama.

A food desert is any area in the industrialised world where healthy, affordable food is difficult to obtain — wikipedia

Many areas classified as food deserts are also job deserts. More than 40,000 associates will work in these stores once they are open. These full- and part-time jobs will provide competitive wages and the opportunity to build a career with the company.

Today’s announcement continues to fulfill one of the key commitments the company made alongside the First Lady in January 2011 as part of Walmart’s healthier food initiative.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are also making a difference in the fight to end hunger by donating $2 billion in cash and in-kind donations through 2015.
