Hair She Goes! First Lady Michelle Obama Covers October Essence

August 31, 2011

ESSENCE magazine today announced that First Lady Michelle Obama will grace the cover of its October issue; with a revealing interview highlighting ESSENCE and the First Lady’s shared commitment to women and girls around the world.  For the annual October ‘Power Issue,’ First Lady Michelle Obama is also feted as one of the world’s most influential Black women on the magazine’s ’2011 Power List.’   The October issue is available on newsstands as of September 12, 2011.

“Michelle Obama is the quintessential ESSENCE woman; impressively defining herself on her own terms,” commented ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief Constance C.R. White. “Opening up to ESSENCE about living her most authentic life – by following her passions and unapologetically investing in herself and her family — Michelle Obama is embracing her purpose and channeling her power.  She is undoubtedly poised to become one of the country’s most popular and productive First Ladies.”

In the ESSENCE October cover story, entitled “The Leading Lady,” Michelle Obama recounts her emotional trip to Africa, providing exclusive images for ESSENCE readers which document her various stops and what they meant to her personally:  ”One of the most beautiful aspects of my trip to Africa was the fact that there were three generations of us there.  It was me, my two little girls and my mom…”

The First Lady also shares her mission to impart a critical message to young women: “My story to young people around this country and around the world is, don’t look at me as the First Lady first; look at me as Michelle Obama, a girl who grew up on the South Side of Chicago.  Because I was there, and this is attainable.”

The Cut with that Brother! Watch Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Interviewed by Tavis Smiley | PBS

August 31, 2011

Tavis talks with the former Detroit mayor about his memoir, Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick.

In ’02, Kwame Kilpatrick became Detroit’s 16th mayor—the youngest mayor of a major U.S. city. Dubbed “America’s First Hip-Hop Mayor,” he initially earned praise for his ability to form coalitions to get things done. But, the lifelong Detroit resident, who also had a successful career as a teacher and state representative, fell from grace when scandals and legal problems forced him to resign. Kilpatrick landed in a prison cell and, in his book, Surrendered—the profits from which will go toward paying restitution to the city—chronicles his rise, fall and revelations.

The Medical School Scholarship Program As Heard on Too Much Truth with Derrick Boazman | IFCO / Pastors for Peace

August 30, 2011

Cuba has a highly sophisticated and world renowned health care system, and a surplus of well-trained physicians. And Cuba made a commitment to start training young people from Nicaragua, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti to be doctors — in order to create a health-care infrastructure to serve future generations in these impoverished nations.

This is how the Latin American Medical School was founded:  Cuba offered 500 full scholarships per year, for the next ten years, to students from the four nations affected by Hurricanes Mitch and Georges.  In this way, Cuba would be training 5000 new doctors — young people who would not otherwise have had access to medical education — to serve in communities which had never had access to quality medical care. The only condition attached to the scholarship was that the students had to make a commitment to return to their home countries, where they would provide medical service in the communities where they were most needed — the poorest, the hardest-hit, the most remote communities of their home countries. The campus of a former naval academy on Cuba’s north coast, just west of Havana, was quickly refurbished for this purpose, and the Latin American School of Medicine opened officially in March 1999.

The program was tremendously successful from the time it started. Other nations heard about the program and inquired about sending their own students. The program quickly grew to include students from 30 nations of Africa and the Americas, and just recently expanded again to include more than 40 nations from many parts of the world. The Cuban Ministry of Public Health has been able to accommodate the growth because of the large number of trained physicians and professors in Cuba, and because of their unwavering commitment to the program.

Spelman College Museum of Fine Art Celebrate 15th Anniversary with 15 Emerging Artists | 15 x 15 Acquisitions Initiative | Atlanta Events

August 30, 2011

Lallaessaydilesfemmesdumaroc-h

The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art, the only museum in the nation that emphasizes art by and about women of the African Diaspora, will celebrate its 15th anniversary with the launch of the 15 x 15 Acquisitions Initiative on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011. The exhibition is on view through Dec. 3, 2011.

The Museum’s 15 x 15 Acquisitions Initiative is a three-part project that involves:

  • acquiring works by 15 emerging, mid-career and established artists
  • an exhibition, “15 x 15: The 15th Anniversary Acquisitions Exhibition,” presenting the 15 soon to be acquired works alongside works by celebrated artists including Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, and Hale Woodruff, which have been in Spelman College’s collection for decades
  • a catalogue to be created with the involvement of scholars, faculty and students

The 15 x 15 Acquisitions Initiative was carefully crafted over the course of more than a year and has been developed in direct response to previous exhibition projects. It creates a context for the College’s past, present and future collecting efforts, and honors the Museum’s unique emphasis on art by and about women of the African Diaspora.

Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, director of the Museum explained, “This anniversary initiative punctuates the Museum’s special milestone in a deliberate and methodical way. By working with friends and supporters to acquire a range of important works by 15 Black women artists, the Museum will stimulate the growth of College’s permanent holdings and expand the Museum’s emphasis on Black women artists in meaningful, tangible ways.”

A varied calendar of events is scheduled in conjunction with the 15th anniversary and acquisitions initiative, beginning with Fête: The Official Launch Party for 15 x 15 on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. This celebration features an exclusive musical experience with internationally-acclaimed DJ Kai Alcé.
