Could a Trend Have Changed The End for #TroyDavis? | Where Did the Tweets Go? Ask Kai Doggett flaimahmy.com | VideoBuzz

September 23, 2011

The Clipping – An article by Kai Doggett @kainicole, owner/publisher of www.Flaimahmy.com (fly mommy), created buzz from Atlanta and beyond when she like others questioned why the hashtag for Troy Davis (#TroyDavis) did not trend.

Troy Davis was executed by the state of Georgia, September 21, 2011.  In a case riddled with doubt, so much so that he had been granted a stay 3 times and protests took place in several countries. Yet while some twitter applications and timelines filled with tweets to bring awareness to the case and execution, a trending topic did not appear until its absence was also protested.

In her article, Did @Twitter Kill #TroyDavis?, Doggett outlines what happened to the tweets.  The buzz from the article hit the airwaves in Atlanta and twitter.

VideoBuzz: Did @Twitter Kill #TroyDavis? a hot topic on The Ryan Report with Ryan Cameron @therealrc and Elle Duncan @elleduncan

Excerpt from Did @Twitter Kill #TroyDavis?

flaimahmy.com – The evidence is very clear and available for all to see.  Twitter made a deliberate action to block the words “Troy Davis” from trending.  But why? Why would Twitter want to prevent people from knowing about Troy Davis?  Of course Twitter admits to removing “offensive” trending topics. Were the words Troy Davis removed because they were “offensive?”  Well, “youknowyoughetto” trended steadily all day Tuesday and was not removed as an “offensive” topic.

Twitter, while not an official news media outlet, does play a large and integral part in social awareness in our world.  Twitter has approximately 200 million users worldwide. That is major influence.

Several thoughts come to mind regarding Twitter controlling trending topics. Why would Twitter prevent its users from knowing about Troy Davis?  Who would make such a decision?  Twitter is not a public company, agency or service.  It is a private company.  Yet in it’s own way, because the public uses it, Twitter is a public voice.  It has the power to influence so much.  It has the ability to tell 200,000,000 (two hundred million) what is currently being talked about world wide. –

The Clippings: Eleventh-hour plea Ask U.S. Supreme Court to Stop Georgia from Executing Troy Davis | Execution Delayed

September 21, 2011

His execution had been set to begin at 7 p.m., but as the hour arrived, Georgia prison officials were still waiting for the high court’s decision.

Though Davis’ attorneys say seven of nine key witnesses against him have disputed all or parts of their testimony, state and federal judges have repeatedly ruled against granting him a new trial. As the court losses piled up Wednesday, his offer to take a polygraph test was rejected and the pardons board refused to give him one more hearing.

Davis’ supporters staged vigils in the U.S. and Europe, declaring “I am Troy Davis” on signs, T-shirts and the Internet.

September 20, 2011

Stop the September 21st execution of Troy Davis!Take Action On This Issue

Georgia’s State Board of Pardons and Paroles has recently rejected Troy Davis’ clemency petition. Davis continues to face execution on Wed., Sept. 21 at 7 pm EDT.We demand that the Board reconsider its decision and demand that Chatham County Savannah District Attorney Larry Chisolm seek a withdrawal of the death warrant and support clemency himself.Troy Davis was convicted on the basis of witness testimony – seven of the nine original witnesses have since recanted or changed their testimony. He has survived three previous execution dates, because people like you kept the justice system in check! Let Georgia authorities know you oppose the death penalty for Troy Davis!
