February is Black History Month and to celebrate, Roswell will host the 11th Annual Roswell Roots festival throughout the month. Roswell Roots is the largest and most comprehensive Black History celebration in the state of Georgia and celebrates black history and culture by sponsoring a variety of art exhibits, history and cultural events.
“Slammin’ in the Suburbs” – Roswell Poetry Slam – For an evening of exciting and inspiring spoken word, join us for “Slammin’ in the Suburbs”. This is Roswell’s 8th annual poetry slam during which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience on content (discretion encouraged) and performance. New this year…an invitational round of competition amongst some of the metro’s best spoken word artists! Also new….bigger and better prizes! A $500 cash 1st place prize will be awarded as well as a $400 2nd place prize, a $300 3rd place prize, a $200 4th place prize and a $100 5th place prize. Cornbread Cook-Off – The first annual Cornbread Cook-Off will take place at Pleasant Hill Community Center with a prize for Best Cornbread chosen by our professional judge, Ms. Susan Puckett, author and former Atlanta Journal/Constitution Food Editor. We’ll also have a People’s Choice Award chosen by you, the attendees! Everyone will get to sample each of the competitors’ cornbread and then vote for your favorite! Atlanta-native and sports enthusiast Rashan Ali is the newest addition to NBA TV’s impressive line-up of analysts and correspondents. Ali joins the network as the Social Media Correspondent on Fantasy Insider, where she will work alongside Host and seasoned sports journalist Rick Kamala and former record-breaking NBA player Dennis Scott. As a correspondent on the show, Ali will infuse social media commentary and questions from fans into the team’s discussions.
“NBA TV is a wonderful network, so I am excited to come back this year in an expanded capacity working with Rick and Dennis,” said Ali. “The fans have a lot of colorful social media commentary this NBA Season, and I love serving as the conduit between them and our international audience, which makes for some lively discussions.”
Fantasy Insider airs live on NBA.com on Mondays from noon – 1 pm (EST) and re-airs on NBA TV at 5 pm (EST). Rashan will make her debut on the show today, January 30, during both broadcasts. NBA TV has millions of domestic subscribers across all major cable and satellite providers and can be viewed in more than 40 countries.

VideoBuzz: Hundreds of police officers across Georgia will gather at a service for an Atlanta police officer killed by a motorist.
The funeral for Senior Police Officer Gail D. Thomas is set for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta. (11Alive.com)
Sunday, friends, community members, classmates, and officers gathered with her family for her wake in southwest Atlanta.
Known for her smile, as God would have it, Thomas memorialized on what is known as “Happy Monday.” Thomas leaves a 22-year-old daughter to cherish her memory. A fund has been established.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told State Department employees Thursday that she will not stay on in the job if President Obama wins re-election, saying that after two decades, she is ready to step off “the high wire of American politics.”
“I think I have made it clear that I will certainly stay on until the President nominates someone and that transition can occur,” Clinton said at a “town hall” forum with State Department employees Thursday morning. “But I think after 20 years—and it will be 20 years—of being on the high wire of American politics and all of the challenges that come with that, it would be probably a good idea to just find out how tired I am.”
“I don’t want to think about what might come next, because I don’t want me or any of us to divert our attention,” Clinton continued, adding that she plans to “work as hard as I can to the last minute I have the honor of being Secretary … to support all of you.”
