Hair She Goes! Voices of Love: Were Whitney Houston’s Friends Saving All Their Love? | #SunsetWhitney
From outside looking in, Whitney Houston appeared to be an uber-sassy sister who kept it real. The kind of sister who would show up and handle some thangs. Was she also the kind of sister that made you worry at times because she might be over the top. We all know that sister. If you don’t know her — then she might be you. Keeping it real.
In spite of all the amazing marketing behind her career, Houston seemed to be, what we have come to know as, the consummate Jersey Girl. Finally, a larger view into the life of Whitney Elizabeth Houston. But here’s my question for her friends and voices of love spoken at her memorial — where the hell have ya’ll been?Tyler Perry took us to church with a lesson on Grace. Most will remember Perry’s attempt to add Whitney Houston, her mother Cissy Houston and famous cousin Dionne Warrick to a soundtrack of one of his creations. While a stellar combination, the song was not necessarily a favorite. Kim Burrell seemed to know Houston well. And the Winans? Were it not enough of them to help a sister out? Were Whitney Houston’s friends saving all their love? As fans go, my fanaticism leaned towards Bobby Brown. Yes for the better part of my music loving life, I’ve been #teamBobby. As a fan, I would and will engage you in a heart beat about Bobby Brown and did so during the sad events surrounding Houston’s death. Something in me always gave that brother the benefit of the doubt. How come we did not get that from #teamWhitney. Why not? Were Whitney Houston’s friends saving all their love? Whitney was the Jersey girl with public secrets. Who knew she had so many voices of love? (as spoken at her homegoing). Where had they been? Why so quiet? Why so hushed? Have we not wanted to know the real deal before? Was the media in that much control that we are only regulated to loving Whitney Houston after her passing? Were Whitney Houston’s friends saving all their love? Was Houston a victim of traditional media? Old school media? As Cornel West might say — a victim of the oligarchy or powers that be in media? I have to wonder if teamWhitney were blowing up editor’s in-boxes over the years constantly trying to get her story right. As a blogger of early 2K, I remember being summoned to meet and blog about Whitney. Unfortunately, Whitney’s father passed and she couldn’t make the junket, but I got to spend some time with Bobby Brown, their family and teamWhitney. While the interview is no longer online (back it the day content placed online didn’t last forever); the audio I still have somewhere as well as a disk with photos. With regards to the possibility of meeting Whitney, I remembered being nervous as hell. Mainly because the private location was full of tremendous tension. TeamWhitney had no idea if Houston would show or in what state she would be — emotionally coming off the lost of her father and all the drama that surrounded her then life. But here we are. A week after the Grammys and a week before the Oscars in the midst of what we think will come to be known as Whitney Week. Were Whitney Houston’s friends saving all their love? Her memorial was absolutely beautiful. For generations to come, the voices of love will tell her story differently. This was their moment. Down to the very end. Their silence broken. Voices of love for Whitney. Finally a chance to be heard in a chance to say goodbye. No more public secrets.

Who benefited from degrading Whitney? Keeping her from movies and the music she loved? Other than that which she did to herself. There is a reasons for it all. Days before her passing, headlines lit up yet again with tremendous speculation. A time that seemed most exciting to her was once again turned inside out. Again from outside looking in, it seemed Houston appeared to enjoy her time around the Grammys. I’m sure many artists enjoy it as a time they can come together, concert and appearances aside. Grammys seemed to be an artist annual reunion. Same goes for other award shows, but Grammys were different. The Clive Davis pre-Grammy party was sure to bring out an appearance by Whitney. If she had a project in the works, we would see or hear a glimpse. As the award show grew closer, more public secrets. The commotion at a club. Gossip about Houston enjoying hotel amenities a bit too much. Passing notes to artists during interviews. Judgment after judgment. Bright was her spotlight of scrutiny. What we didn’t see — voices of love all these years. If her blessings had been a snake, we would be bit. Convinced to turn away from that which God had given us. Were Whitney Houston’s friends saving all their love? Where had they been? Why so quiet? Why so hushed? Have we not wanted to know the real deal before? Finally a chance to hear. Voices of love shouldn’t come once in a lifetime — at the end of life. Where is the redemption in that and for whom is it for? What about Bobbi Kristina? The spotlight of scrutiny has changed its focus. If Whitney Houston’s friends were saving all their love, now is the time for love to continue to shine — on her daughter.
