The Cut with that Brother! GLAAD Seeks CNN Action After Roland S Martin Super Bowl Tweet – But Not TV One? | What Does That Say About GLAAD?
GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) is not happy following some Super Bowl tweets which crossed their stream from twitter addict and media veteran Roland S Martin (@RolandSMartin). The organization immediately begin firing off tweets in response for Martin tweets about a smackdown of one that might display certain behaviors following a popular commercial. GLAAD suggested action by CNN where Martin serves as commentator.
From advocate.com GLAAD to CNN: Fire Roland Martin for Antigay Comments
GLAAD reports that after retailer H&M’s Super Bowl commercial featuring soccer player David Beckham, Martin tweeted to his nearly 95,000 Twitter followers, “If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him! #superbowl.”
In response, GLAAD wrote, “@rolandsmartin Advocates of gay bashing have no place at @CNN #SuperBowl #LGBT.” Martin replied that GLAAD was “way off base” and suggested that his tweet was a joke about soccer fans, not gays. — advocate.com
Wait a minute. Roland S Martin works for several outlets. Why just CNN? Not that we want the brother to get fired, but what’s with the bias in calling out the defamation?
“GLAAD reports that Martin has a history of antigay statements…”
If such is true, then should not Martin be pulled from all outlets? Does not advocacy extend to the African American community?
In tweets the following Monday morning, Martin told one of his followers:
BigSqueezeO I talked smack about the Beckham ad because it was soccer. I always crack on soccer. Did it all day. This is nonsense
So by his tweets is Martin saying, if a football fan got excited about soccer during the Super Bowl, he should get a smack down? Or is this a bad case of damage control? I don’t know. The commercial in question showed a poorly tatted Beckham poorly occupying a pair of briefs.
Martin could and probably used his segment on the Tom Joyner Morning Show (7:20 AM weekdays), another outlet overlooked by GLAAD, to address the issue. We’re watching the archives to see if we missed it.

This is a very interesting angle presented in this blog post. You have stereotypically turned a gay issue into a black people vs white people issue. I personally think identifying every single outlet he works for is irrelevant. I also think it's somewhat irresponsible of Dryerbuzz to not list all of the details since this is not Roland's first questionable tweet. In this post-bullying society, we all need to be more responsible especially if you're a public figure. Wrong is wrong whether you're black or white. If race is in fact an issue then let's discuss why a predominantly white gay organization had to come after him instead of a black gay organization. Then, let's further the discussion by discussing why so few black gay organizations exist in the black community. We, as a human race, needs to stop pointing fingers and take some responsibility to make some real change for the betterment of us all. I hope this comment is not misinterpreted. Thanks for reading!
