The BET HIP HOP AWARDS, filmed at Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center on Saturday, September 29.  Legendary MC, Rakim is recipient of the “I AM HIP HOP ICON” Award.  The show quickly gained TMZ headlines with reported issues between Rick Ross and Young Jeezy.

Living Atlanta Style! Chaka Khan and Atlanta’s own Future in the line-up of 24th annual Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic Halftime | Game & Parade Details

The legendary 10-time Grammy Award winning Chaka Khan and Atlanta’s own Future have been added to the line-up of the 24th annual Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic halftime show to be themed “One Love. One Music. One Culture.” – as announced by the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, a volunteer community organization focused on education, empowerment and enrichment in African-American youth that presents the game.

Headliner Chaka Khan and Future will join Doug E. Fresh – “The original human beatbox”, which will also feature the award-winning Southern University marching band, dubbed the Human Jukebox. The 100 Black Men of Atlanta will be the executive producers of the halftime show to be choreographed by Sean Bankhead, who has worked with Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Cheri Dennis and Miley Cyrus, and produced by Doug E. Fresh and Bart Phillips, executive producer of the Soul Train Awards and CEO of Sunseeker Media. 

 

The Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic is one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) football games and one of the biggest recurring sporting events in Georgia. The iconic HBCU event pits the Florida A&M University Rattlers against the Southern University-Baton Rouge Jaguars on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.

The Parade of Excellence takes place on Saturday, September 29, 2012 stepping off at 10:00 am from the corner of Peachtree and Baker streets.  It then follows Peachtree, taking a right onto Marietta St. and ending by Phillips Arena.

A long car chase through rural Arizona just aired on Fox News and ended tragically with the suicide of the carjacker.

Fox had been following the pursuit since a little before 3:00 p.m. ET, as the red vehicle weaved at speeds of 110 mph on an Arizona freeway and then on a dirt road west of Tonopah.

Living Atlanta Style! Tupac Amaru Shakur Collection Conference Held at Atlanta University Center September 28-29, 2012

On September 28-29, 2012, Hip Hop scholars, educators, students and artists are convening at the Atlanta University Center (AUC) Robert W. Woodruff Library in Atlanta, Georgia for the Tupac Amaru Shakur Collection Conference. The academic conference, “Hip Hop, Education, and Expanding the Archival Imagination,” explores the life and work of Tupac Shakur and Hip Hop archives and studies.

Speakers include Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, professor of Black Popular Culture at Duke University; Dr. Jeffrey O. G. Ogbar, Vice Provost for Diversity and professor of History at the University of Connecticut; Kevin Powell, author and political activist; and Dr. Akinyele K. Umoja, associate professor and chair of the Department of African American Studies at Georgia State University

The conference commemorates the Tupac Amaru Shakur Collection, which opened to the public for research last year on the fifteenth anniversary of the artist’s death. Spanning a period from 1969 to 2008, the Shakur Collection includes items such as handwritten song lyrics and poems, memorabilia, correspondence, press clippings and publicity materials. The Shakur Collection represents a partnership between the AUC Woodruff Library, Amaru Entertainment, Inc. and the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to make available these original documents.

Living Atlanta Style! Komen Atlanta’s 7th Annual Worship in Pink Weekend set for October 19-21

The Greater Atlanta Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure today announces the dates for its 7th annual Worship in Pink (WIP) Weekend. The grassroots program, planned in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, will be held the weekend of October 19-21.

Through WIP Weekend, Komen Atlanta invites local churches, mosques and synagogues to come together and spread the life-saving message of breast cancer early detection throughout each congregation.

Komen Atlanta provides each participating faith-based organization with an easy to implement online program planning kit, as well as free breast health information packets. Breast health information packets include WIP bookmarks, breast self awareness cards, mammography cards and breast health basics cards.

A Community Lecture presented by Dr. Ayanna Thompson. Dr. Ayanna Thompson, the Associated Dean of Faculty and Professor of English at Arizona State University, presents a community lecture Weyward Macbeth: Intersections of Race and Performance. This lecture will examine the history of adaptions and reconsiderations of Macbeth, and how contemporary performances of one of the most ubiquitous Shakespearean tragedies have engaged issues of race.  NBAF presents this lecture in collaboration with the Auburn Avenue Research Library.
