The Clippings: Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi, historically black fraternities Form Obama Super PAC

January 10, 2012

Backed by members of Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi, historically black fraternities that both celebrated their centennials last year, 1911 United aims to raise $1.5 million toward training and organizing African-American voters in key battleground states to re-elect President Obama. Members of the two fraternities joined forces last year, officially forming the committee in December, after seeing that both organizations were running their own campaign volunteer-recruitment efforts at college homecoming events.

“We were thinking about how we could really honor the legacy of those brothers who got together 100 years ago, and we thought perhaps the best thing we could do is help re-elect our president,” Sinclair Skinner, committee treasurer, told The Root.

To achieve this goal, 1911 United plans to organize and deploy 10,000 volunteers to register at least 100 voters each and activate them to hit the polls. The PAC is focusing its efforts in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Colorado

Hair She Goes! Priceless Project, Driven to Recognize, Celebrate and Empower 1,000,000 Priceless Female Spirits (13 to 20 years old)

July 26, 2011

Ruby Taylor, M.S.W. founder of the Priceless Project™, is committed to ensuring that 1,000,000 young women and girls (13 to 20 years old) know they are PRICELESS. The Priceless Project™ offers Community Outreach and an inspirational online community at the PricelessProject.com.

The website, http://PricelessProject.com, launches July 29th, 2011 as an online resource to recognize, celebrate and empower the female priceless spirit. The Priceless Project strongly believes in Community Outreach. We will do monthly Community Outreach in Lancaster City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City and beyond.

The PRICELESS Project originated in 2007 when master’s level social worker Ruby L. Taylor began to internalize the pain and hurt her nieces and students faced because of family, social and educational circumstances. To support and encourage her nieces and students, she wrote a poem entitled “What Are You Worth?” Ruby used the poem for hurting teenagers in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania to help encourage each student to know he or she is PRICELESS. She took a special interest in young ladies and girls in 2011 when Rowena Dixon, a fellow co-worker, expressed a need to help young ladies understand their self-worth.

Growing up in the Bronx, New York, Ruby knows firsthand what happens when a young women does not feel worthy. As a result, she was on the verge of failing out of high school and living a life she did not desire. One day, Crystal Russell, a neighborhood friend, invited her to a dinner at the Marriot Marquis with the Attorney General Janet Reno. Ruby says, “That night, sitting with high-achieving students from various NYC public high schools exposed me to possibilities. I realized I was worthy of being invited to an event for honor students, even though I was not an honor student. I was worthy of graduating high school. I was worthy of attending college and going after my goals. The one night of possibility changed my life view forever. It took the life of pain and hurt and turned it into a life of healing, hope and joy. I realized I was priceless, no matter what.”

About PricelessProject.com
The Priceless Project is an inspirational online community for young women to promote self-worth, success and self-development. The site offers visitors expertise on various topics impacting the female priceless spirit from family issues, relationship problems, school concerns, drug abuse, sexual abuse and much more. BlackFridayGiving: Hosea Feed The Hungry

February 16, 2009

Hosea Feed The Hungry and Homeless was founded in 1971 by civil rights icons Rev. Hosea and Juanita T. Williams. Their vision was instrumental in guiding Hosea Feed The Hungry and Homeless as it became one of the most significant human services organization in the Southeast United States providing services for some 50,000 people per year. In 2000, Afemo and Elisabeth Omilami, who have extensive experience in program development and an in-depth knowledge of meeting the basic needs of families in crisis so those families don’t become homeless especially the working poor and the homeless, tripled the numbers served and expanded HFTH to a year-round human service organization.
