PhotoBuzz: The Tony Awards Celebrates Another Year of Greats on Stage

June 10, 2013

Follow the buzz in photos from The Tony Awards hosted again by Neal Patrick Harris. Love how theatre remains true to itself with something for everyone without trying to be everything to everybody. Theatre is a love affair to have all your own but one you can share.

April 13, 1865, Richmond, Virginia: the story begins. Wounded Jewish Confederate soldier Caleb DeLeon stumbles home. There to greet him are his family’s former slaves Simon and John. And a cobbled together Passover Seder. Caught in a moment as everything changes while the past’s hold remains primal, Caleb and the men celebrate Passover together where secrets are revealed and the plot twists and turns.

I love exploring theatre where history comes to life.  Question on my mind after seeing the show. If declared slaves, then declared free — what declarations have Blacks in America made for themselves? How is it Blacks and Jews are so often compared? What say you? Living Atlanta Style! Melba Moore Stars In Hilarious Musical: Good God A’Mighty! | Now thru Feb 24th | With Just June and Dante Carter | 14th Street Playhouse

February 17, 2013

Living Atlanta Style! My love for theatre comes full circle.  Shortly after post time, I’m heading to 14th Street Playhouse to witness Melba Moore in the musical Good God A’Mighty!  Almost 30 years ago, if not more, I feel in love with theatre when I saw Melba Moore as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins in Purlie.  Hold my mule!

Now comes the hit comedy play Good God A’Mighty! to Atlanta.

Good God A’Mighty!

“I’m delighted to bring the hit comedy play Good God A’Mighty! to Atlanta for a special two-week engagement,” states playwright Lolita Snipes. “It’s my Valentine’s gift to the city. Starring Tony Award winning actress and legendary singer Melba Moore, this electrifying comedy will give audiences a behind-the-scenes look inside an African-American church in the midst of change.”

“Featured in the cast of memorable characters are nationally known comedians Just June and Dante Carter. Make plans to bring your family and friends to join us at the intimate 14th Street Playhouse from February 14-24.”

The play takes a comical look into African-American church culture when a vibrant young Pastor from New York moves down south to take over an old style church. The zany antics are non-stop when two church mothers fall in love with him while sparks fly as the other members fight to keep their old traditions intact.Trouble and fun ensue when the bombastic choir director tries to run him out of the “The Big Easy” and back to the “The Big Apple!” Amidst the laughter, the story weaves the universal themes of love, relationships, and what it means to truly belong to a community. Sometimes you find inspiration in the most unexpected places and realize…God really does have a sense of humor.

The foot-stomping, soul-stirring original music scored by Lolita Snipes for Good God A’Mighty! ranges from gospel, classic choir music and a-cappella, to R&B. Audiences will also get a chance to experience the traditional Holy Dance, which is an integral part of the Black gospel expression.

Melba Moore plays feisty choir director, Reen L’Dimp, who takes her position as head of the clean-up committee very seriously. Moore began her acting career on Broadway in the classic musical HAIR. From there she went on to star in PURLIE and earned a Tony Award for her portrayal as Lultiebelle. She appeared with the iconic Eartha Kitt in the hit musical Timbuktu! And she made history as the first African-American to perform in the role of Fantine on Broadway in the acclaimed musical, Les Misérables.

Joining Moore, the over-the-top role of Mother Nelson is hilariously portrayed by Just June. Dante Carter is Deacon Burton, a pillar of the church who has a penchant for pop culture and is an avid “Housewives” fan.

The production team for Good God A’Mighty! includes Lolita Snipes, Playwright & Director; Ross Fleming, Producer; DJ Cut Master Swift, Music Producer; William Green, Music Director; Theresa Hightower, Vocal Director; Paula Monette, Set Designer; Verda “Bella Blue” Watson, Casting Producer and Mesheka Carson as Stage Manager.

The 14th Street Playhouse is conveniently located at 173 14th Street, at the corner of 14th Street and Juniper, across from the W Midtown.

The Buzz: “Sojourner” is a biography of Sojourner Truth. “Sojourner” takes a hard look at her life, not only as a woman, but as a slave. It also takes a compelling look at pre-civil war America and what led to the conflict.

“Sojourner” will at times make you laugh, then cry, and force a look at the morals, values and conditions that shaped America. You will awe at Sojourner Truth’s unwavering spirit to overcome – and be moved to “sojourn for the truth… even to the ends of the earth.”
