Buzzing Fathers: “I Am A Father, Celebrating African-American Fathers” | BookBuzz
June 15, 2011
“I Am A Father, Celebrating African-American Fathers” When you take a moment to reflect on that statement, what are the stories and images that come to mind? What are the personal stories of your relationship with your father? These are the questions that are answered in the book project, “I Am A Father, Celebrating African-American Fathers”. It captures the relationship of fathers and their children. “I Am A Father, Celebrating African-American Fathers” tells the stories of what makes the father/child relationship so very special.
The Journey toward a purposeful life for African Americans may appear to be stacked with many obstacles to overcome. We know that it requires hard work, dedication, discipline and determination just to stay on a level playing field. A caring and devoted father can be the difference in a child choosing the straight or curved, positive or negative road of life. In today’s society you hear these types of statements on a regular basis: “Another African-American male arrested for – drug possession, sexual assault, refusal to pay child support, or abandonment…the negative list goes on and on.
“I Am A Father, Celebrating African-American Fathers” from David T. Manuel includes testimonies that are presented through interviews on topics that have made a lasting effect on their lives. Page after page introduces the reader to the essence of the power and influence of our fathers. Read from the children of Sidney Poitier, Morgan Freeman, Ossie Davis, Yung Joc and many others.

Hair She Goes! Tory's Stories | A Blog Saga | One Day at a Time
Day 1: A Second Life — Tory Lane Banks sat alone in the middle of the floor. In the midst of fresh paint she wondered if she had chosen the right build-out for the new reception area. Tory looked from one corner office to the next taking in the view. Not just the view of each office, but the view from the 10th floor. She chuckled as the choir in her head began singing “Moving on Up” from the sitcom The Jeffersons. Tory chose the 10th floor because it provided a nice view of the skyline. Ten stories was also all she could walk if she ever had to leave the building in a hurry.
Tory was the female Tyler Perry when it came to capturing an audience. She had the Midas touch of turning relationships into revenue. Her audience was highly sought after and brands were beating down the door to jump on the band wagon. While the money was good, she made sure to keep it real and not sell off her audience to the highest bidder. She knew what her audience wanted but more important what they needed. Partnering with Tory meant that companies had to come with both.
She sat smiling enjoying the excitement of her new accomplishment. At the same time she felt the anxiety of taking such a great leap of faith. Before now, life had been what she wanted to do when she wanted to do it. Now she had people counting on her to get it done. Tory was the new boss with a hell of a business plan. At least that is what of a group of angel investors thought after meeting her at the entrepreneurs conference. Tory attended the conference hoping to learn about taking her business to the next level. There she took advantage of a chance meeting. A great pitch landed her in front of one of the top startup gurus. After studying Tory’s plan, he encircled her with the cream of the crop in business coaches. Tory had the plan to re-invent the wheel known as advertising.
Twelve months later, just a week from the next conference, Tory and three others were to be up and running. Their ventures would be celebrated at the conference. Tory’s business would be a hybrid between advertising and multimedia. Her events had become so popular and generated such revenue that they required year round planning. With an empty nest after twenty plus years of being mommy, it was time to move from the dinning room to the boardroom. This was the second life everybody talked about after being young mothers. This was the time to get “smoking” that Oprah had mention a zillion shows ago.
By morning, Tory would be in business. An assistant was coming to start a new job. Her company name on the directory board downstairs. A receptionist would be answering the phones. Part of her team moving from virtual to in-house. No more conference calls in her pajamas. She had an office to go to each morning. She had a new a studio from which she would conduct her weekly show as well as create spots for clients. This was it. Was she moving too fast? Had she moved fast enough?
Just then Tory’s phone and tablet chimed with a simultaneous message “I’m coming up.” Sims was in the lobby. As if her heart wasn’t racing fast enough, now she had butterflies in stomach. Sims always did that to her. Their relationship was still new but Sims fit right into her busy life. Himself busy with corporate tax season, finally he would get to see why Tory was so occupied. Tory liked her relationship with Sims. They didn’t require each other but they so desired each other. She didn’t have to explain her past nor did she have to worry about the future. They tried to keep up with each other, but this was the time of year when date nights were on hold. As Sims walked through the door, his cologne filling the suite, Tory remembered just how long it had been.
Tory thought, “this is just too much for one day.”
