When Barack Obama raises his right hand on Jan. 21 to “…faithfully execute the office of president…” his left hand will be resting on a worn black leather Bible, with a slight tear on the cover, that normally resides under glass in the King Center in Atlanta.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Thursday that a Bible Martin Luther King Jr carried with him during his rise as a civil rights leader, will be one of two used at the Jan. 21 Inauguration. The other one was used by Abraham Lincoln during his first inauguration in 1861 and by Obama in 2009.
The use of their Bibles come on the 50th anniversary of the King-led March on Washington and 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
“These two Bibles represent the stride for freedom. One represents emancipation; the other represents inclusion into the fabric of the American experience,” said King’s daughter, Bernice King. “My father was a civil rights leader, but this reminds us that he was first and foremost, a pastor. Everything he did was influenced by the Bible.”

Hair She Goes! MLK Memorial Events Proivded Chance to Recall Past Experiences with Martin Luther King Jr for Janet Langhart Cohen
November 16, 2011
Hair She Goes! – Janet Langhart Cohen, a writer and journalist, met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a young woman and considered him a mentor. In this video, Janet talks about Dr. King’s personality and shares a story about how she once tried to impress him with her bravado. She instead learned an important humbling message about what it meant to march with him, and today Janet recognizes General Motors for helping to make the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial a reality.
Cohen is best known as the author of From Rage To Reason: My Life in Two Americas
This event was one of many around the country in part of the Table of Brotherhood Tour, sponsored by Chevrolet and the GM Foundation to raise awareness of the memorial and to organize conversations about issues that were important to Dr. King and are still as relevant and poignant today.

To the world, Martin Luther King Jr.will be remembered as an influential and inspirational civil rights leader.
But to Christine King Ferris he was Martin – her brother.
“He was just a person – a regular ‘fella,’” Christine, 85, said. “He was always genuinely concerned for others even while we were growing up.”

The Clipping: Dr Boyce: 5 Questions Dr. King Would Ask About His Memorial | News One
October 17, 2011
It only makes sense that we show respect for those who have chosen to participate in the Martin Luther King Memorial Dedication ceremonies this week. Millions of Americans truly appreciate the legacy of Dr. King, and their involvement in the ceremony is reflective of this sentiment. So, my desire not to participate in the commemoration is out of respect for Dr. King’s principles, but with full understanding of those who choose to disagree.
As a people, I argue that too few of us possess the passionate desire to fight the tough battles necessary to see Dr. King’s dream come to fruition.
