Relive the Kentucky Derby excitement with Calvin Borel on Talkin Horses Thurs May 7th Noon ET on BloodHorse.com

May 5, 2009

LEXINGTON, Ky. – May 5 – Calvin Borel, the hard-working and unassuming Thoroughbred jockey who won his second Kentucky Derby aboard 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird, will be the special guest on BloodHorse.com’s “Talkin’ Horses” podcast this week on Thursday, May 7, at Noon, ET, sponsored by OCDTM Pellets. Fans and racing enthusiasts are invited to submit their questions for Calvin Borel now through Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET, by visiting http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/Talkin-Horses/

The 42-year-old Louisiana native, whose brother Cecil is a successful trainer on the Louisiana and Midwest circuits, used the same path to the winner’s circle – along the inside rail – with Mine That Bird that he took with Street Sense two years ago. It was a huge weekend for Borel, who also won the Kentucky Oaks the previous day by 20-1/4 lengths with Rachel Alexandra, becoming only the seventh jockey in history to accomplish that feat.

Buzzing the Blogs: Transracial Adoption: When the Parents are African American Parents & the Child is Caucasian (Source: mothertalkers.com)

April 26, 2009

mothertalkers.com — As an adoptive mother of Eastern European Jewish background (i.e. very pale skin) with children who were born in Guatemala, I am familiar with the look full of the question strangers are dying to (and sometimes do) ask me about my family: “Are those your kids?” and the assumption that my husband is Latino. However, once the stranger knows I’m their mother, the assumptions about my role with my children usually ends there. Not so when you are African American and your child is white. The roots of this reaction probably lies in racism and the history of African Americans in the US.

Buzzing the Blogs: Negative Media Imaging of African American Males

April 19, 2009

VHardyPhD’s Blog – vhardyphd.wordpress.com

Blog Excerpt — As I was watching a news broadcast (KOAA.com), a negative media image was shown that reflected the African American male population. Therefore, I submitted the following email to the general manager of the station:

“I am submitting this email to express my concern about the 6pm news broadcast that took place on 4/17/09. There was a news clip about a carjacking with a male and female who were eventually captured. The lead in to this news story was the news anchor with an image next to him of an African American male’s hands in handcuffs… (while the criminals in this case were not African American)”

Buzzing the Blogs: Do Black & Green Go Together? An African-American Treehugger Sounds Off

Bianca Alexander blogs at thesoulofgreen.ning.com

Blog Excerpt — What’s a black girl from the Nation’s Capital (aka: the Chocolate City) care about compact fluorescent light bulbs, reforestation in the Brazilian rainforest, or endangered wolf packs in Colorado? Had you met me ten years ago, I would’ve told you “not a damn thing!” But today, I stand proudly as an advocate for renewable energy, toxin-free personal care products, and organic food for the masses.

How could this unexpected metamorphosis happen?

Buzzing the Blogs: What Every African American Woman Should Know About Black Skin Care

April 19, 2009

acne-skin-care.home-repair101.net examines some of the positive attributes of naturally dark skin.

Post Excerpt — Black skin care is a subject that many African American women want to know more about. Having spent years in the skin care industry, received many inquiries from African American women. Since African Americans have stronger protection against sun damage, they age more gracefully and are less likely to show severe signs of aging through the quality of their skin.

Buzzing the Blogs: African-American Heritage Travel in “The Year of Obama”

April 19, 2009

Travelosophy / Bob Fisher’s Blog www.travelosophy.ca

Blog Excerpt –It goes without saying that since the election of Barack Obama, the general travelling public has become even more aware of Black history than ever before. A frontier has been crossed; the United States of America and the world in general have moved forward. And, as is the case with all significant current events, history will assess how the “event” altered the course of events in human civilization.

Leading up to the election of Obama in the fall of 2008, I had the opportunity of visiting Albany, Georgia where many say the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. really began.

writemix.blogspot.com — African American neighborhoods, people, culture and religious roots are steeped with stories yet untold, many were waiting, simmering in a pot of obstacles so enormous the world’s landscape had to be plowed under and plowed again to unleash the seed.

The 21st Century is a declared state of almost limitless possibilities for African American writers to be published. There is no lack of stories to be told or places to tell them. We have always told stories, listened to the colorful arrangements of our history and future from those who came before us.
