The Cut & Buzz Around Avatar – Stars attend premiere of the film in Los Angeles | PhotoBuzz

December 18, 2009

20TH CENTURY FOX PREMIERES AVATAR

The Cut — AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of “Titanic,” first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

Behind the Buzz – The world and U.S. premieres of Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron’s highly-anticipated AVATAR  shown in industry-leading RealD 3D. The U.S. premiere in Los Angeles on December 16, 2009, saw the legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theatre upgraded to RealD 3D using the company’s XL Cinema System, marking the first time 3D has been displayed in the opulent theatre. The Mann Chinese was one of RealD’s flagship installations and has been a showcase for RealD 3D for films to-date. Read More

The human outpost on Pandora, remotely controlled biological bodies and the Na’vi civilization all form the story of the much-anticipated blockbuster “Avatar.” To bring these elements to life in a visually immersive 3D experience, the moviemakers used Sony high-definition digital cinematography cameras.

The movie combines live action sequences with state-of-the-art special effects and, according to the production teams, the Sony cameras were the right choice to deliver the story’s vision.

Vince Pace, veteran cinematographer and 3D technology expert, co-developed the 3D camera rigs, which use Sony cameras specially modified for the movie’s requirements for stereoscopic image capture and production.

“Avatar” used eight Sony HDC-F950 cameras for primary acquisition. Additionally, Sony HDC-1500 cameras captured speed shots during live action, with the then recently available F23 camera also used for specific shots.
