Jan 14, 6-8 p.m. – Journalism program co-founder, Spike Lee ’79, University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, former Miami football coach Randy Shannon, track star Marion Jones and ESPN sportscaster Michael Wilbon will participate in “The Current Image of the Black Athlete” Town Hall meeting at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. ABC-TV’s Robin Roberts and ESPN’s Bob Ley will co-host this nationally televised program that will be open to the public.

(HOT) Hear Our TeensAtlanta – Activist, Author, Founder and National President of Youth In Action, 13 year old Mary Pat Hector is hosting a youth conference led by the members of Youth In Action and several other teen prodigies ie… 14 y/o Morehouse College genius Stephen Stafford , Al Sharpton’s (NAN) National Executive Director Tameka Mallory, Teen Sensation T Rep Praise, Sharon J Hill, Monique Rivarde, CBS radio’s Derrick Boazman the host of “Too Much Truth” on WAOK 1380a.m and a host of other political figures and leaders in the community.

Mary Pat and YIA will be presented with a Proclamation from the city of Atlanta by Councilman Michael Bonds.

This conference is the first of its kind, a platform hosted by teens for teens. Youth In Action is determined to save the WORLD one project at a time. The conference will include workshops based on prevention (bullying/teen violence), leadership, self-esteem, healthy choices and decision-making skills. Each workshop is 45 minutes long and includes student participation and interaction.

Friday, January 14, 2011 – 6pm-9pm Meet & Greet Teen Network Mixer with performances by Rock Kandi and at the newly renovated Metroplex Skating Rink located 1959 Metropolitan Parkway Atlanta,Ga 30315

Saturday, January 15, 2011 – 8a.m.-4p.m. Youth In Action National Teen Conference held at the Georgia World Congress Center 285 International BLVD Atlanta, Ga 30313

Sunday, January 16, 2011 – Youth In Action will be doing their monthly community service project. To be announced at the conference.

Photographer Adam Bouska is coming to Atlanta for his next round of NOH8 subjects. On January 16th, he will host a three-hour photo shoot for local gay rights activists and the general public, too. Photos cost a small fee, but the impact is priceless.

“I see this event as part of a long term process for me and for the greater Atlanta community to heal and to transform hate into love as part of the historic 25th anniversary celebration of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday,” says Josh Noblitt, one of the local organizers. “I am thrilled to be a part of bringing the NOH8 campaign to Atlanta.”

The LEAD Foundation, Inc. hosting inaugural MLK Day Celebration Brunch | Gwinnett Historic Courthouse Jan 17th | MLKDayAtlanta.com

On January 17th, the first holiday of the year takes place. The LEAD Foundation, Inc. is hosting its inaugural MLK Day Celebration Brunch. The event takes place immediately after the MLK March in downtown/historic Lawrenceville.

In addition to enjoying an opportunity to commune with each other and celebrate the impact of Dr. King, along with the outreach and action… that is required of us, as an added bonus, take in the wisdom, knowledge, and sincerity of our keynote speaker, Herman Pennamon (Founder of the Gwinnett Unity Group).

Tickets for the brunch are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 5-11; kids under 5 are free, and there are family-packages as well.

Proceeds from the brunch are directly supporting the LEAD Foundation’s year-round programs for young people in grades 6-12.

A weekend of amazing events planned for Atlanta’s own Basketball Icon.  Dominique Wilkins is known as a great community leader in the city of Atlanta and he has chosen The Diabetes Foundation as a foundation to support and increases awareness of a silent killer. The foundation is near and dear to his heart, diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes ten years ago, and a few years before Wilkins lost his father to this silent killer. Dominique uses his diagnosis of diabetes to impact the lives of those around him.

As part of the star studded weekend, Salute to the Legend – Legendary Awards will honor Dr. Joseph Lowery with the Pioneer Award, and the The S.O.S Band with the Legendary Award. Mayor Kasim Reed, Mrs. Monica Kaufman- Pearson, Mr. Julius Erving and Mrs. Daye Bexley will receive Human Highlight Award honors.

One of the NBA’s true marquee players for more than a decade, Wilkins was named to seven All-NBA teams and nine consecutive All-Star squads and is a two-time winner of the NBA Slam-Dunk Championship. One of only 12 players to score over 25,000 points in his NBA career. An Atlanta legend,  you can team up with Dominique in raising awareness and making a difference in the community.

The 2011 King Holiday Observance will mark the 82nd birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the 43rd Annual Program of the King Center, and the 25th anniversary of the National Holiday in his honor, which is celebrated in all 50 states and over 100 countries around the world.

MLK Holiday Highlights

  • The Metropolitan Atlanta Violence Prevention Partnership (MAVPP) will host the seminar in collaboration with the King Center.
  • Georgia Governor will host the tribute to Dr. King, with participation of King Center officials.
  • The AFSC will host its annual Peace Day Program at the King Center
  • Robert Spano leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 19th annual King Celebration
  • Program & Birthday Party with Children Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King
  • The Andrew Young Foundation will hosts the First Annual Civil Rights Film Festival
  • Annual Salute to Greatness Awards Dinner
  • Booksigning will feature members of the King family.

The 2.5 mile Kingian Nonviolence in Action Youth Run/Walk launches The King Center’s 2011 King Holiday Observance and the 25th anniversary of the national holiday. The King Center recognizes obesity and decreased physical activities as precedent conditions which contribute and foster an environment of societal and self-violence (violence directed against self through neglect and physical inactivity).
