MatchingMillions Spotlight: Credit Cards vs Debit Cards- What’s Best For Your College Student | SmartBlackWoman

August 22, 2012

Clipped from Credit Cards vs Debit Cards- What’s Best For Your College Student | smartblackwoman.blogspot.com

I made the decision to give my son both a Credit and Debit Card. The Credit Card would be used primarily for expenses related to College and the Debit Card for entertaining. He and I went into a Chase Bank and applied for a Credit Card. I was able to set the credit limit which was $2000. In addition to setting the limit, I monitored his usage and paid the balance due in full monthly.

Here we are, four years later and the account has been closed and paid in full. Last year of College approaching and he decided that the Debit Card was sufficient. My experience was good, however most aren’t. College Students tend to be the biggest target of Credit Card companies. The Credit Card Act which took affect over 2 years ago makes it much more difficult for students under the age of 21 to get a card without a co-signer and/or sufficient income. So let’s talk about what’s best for your child; Credit Cards help students build a credit history. Typically the interest rates are low and they do not allow you to spend more than the limit you’ve received. Debit Cards are linked to Checking Accounts and just like a Credit Card, you can not spend more than what you have. The downside of Debit Cards is that you can not establish a credit history, however you’re not in debt.

MatchingMillions Spotlight: How To Deal With Burnout While Side Hustling | Chasing Your Freedom

August 22, 2012

Clipped from How To Deal With Burnout While Side Hustling | chasingyourfreedom.com

When you’re focused on building a side business while working full-time, you deal with a range of emotions. When you first get started, you’re on fire…..motivated and taking serious action.  You get up early, work on your business during your lunch breaks, and sneak in time in the evenings and late nights. This can go on for weeks and maybe even for several months. You’re enthusiastic and hopeful about your future.

Then it happens.

Things get nuts at work or with your personal life. Your house is in disarray (and now it’s annoying).  You start to feel fat or generally out of shape.  The last thing you want to do when you leave your job is to work again, even if it’s on something that you really enjoy doing.

You wonder for a moment why you are working so doggone hard and if it’s really worth it.  You start to ask yourself “Is this business EVER going to make enough money?” or ”Am I EVER going to get rid of this all debt?”

Burnout.

I’ve been there, and to be honest it still happens on occasion even though I’m no longer side hustling and am working fewer hours.

If you’re suffering from burnout right now as you’re side hustling, I want to offer you a few strategies for dealing with it that have worked for me.

The Clippings: How The Poor, The Middle Class And The Rich Spend Their Money : Planet Money : NPR #MatchingMillions

August 1, 2012

How do Americans spend their money? And how do budgets change across the income spectrum?

The graph below answers these questions. It shows average household spending patterns for U.S. households in three income categories — one just below the poverty line, one at the middle of the income distribution and one at the top of the distribution.

How The Poor, The Middle Class And The Rich Spend Their Money

Both the similarities and the differences are striking.

MatchingMillions is the New Trend of Instant Gratification | Trendsetters Pledge to Stop Robbing Their Future

July 18, 2012

QOD: How is it Africans Americans connect to phantom of ‘buying power’ but disconnect to ‘donate’ and art of giving?

What started as a conversation now finds its audience in a down economy with those looking to rebound and recover.  With staggering stats on wealth gaps, African Americans need a solution. Now comes #MatchingMillions to impact where African Americans exist financially.

Reports such as those provided by the Pew Research Center continuously demonstrate how African Americans sit at the bottom when it comes to income, savings, and even philanthropy but taunt a phantom buying power. African Americans appear to be over-extended regardless of economic class or standing.  The time has come to realize that today’s instant gratification is in essence robbing one’s future.

2011-wealth-gaps-24

The median wealth of white households is 20 times that of black households and 18 times that of Hispanic households, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of newly available government data from 2009. Read More via Wealth Gaps Rise to Record Highs Between Whites, Blacks, Hispanics

As a result of these divergent trends, in 2009 the typical household headed by the older adult had $170,494 in net worth, compared with just $3,662 for the typical household headed by the younger adult. People generally accumulate wealth as they age, so it is not unusual to find large age-based gaps on this measure. However, the current gap is unprecedented. In 1984, the age-based wealth gap had been 10:1. By 2009, it had ballooned to 47:1. Read more via The Rising Age Gap in Economic Well-Being

When discussing foreclosure crisis, there also appeared to be a disconnect between perception current crisis and the result of wealth robbed from future generations.  Failure of one generation to purchase and pay off homes robs future generations of inheriting wealth of homes and land paid in full.

Additionally, while African Americans enjoy connecting to phantom of buying power, too many at the same time are disconnected from the real reality and gratification of donating and making philanthropic contributions outside of tithes given to churches.  Jokingly but with some truth to the matter, we teased our audience on twitter that churches now use tithes for debt repayment because they have to go into debt to build Coliseum like churches to attract people to God. (moving away from the lightening).

Not to make light of the situation but to drive the point home, we shared with our audience how  African Americans must understand there is no return of investment on ‘buying power’ – just count it as a trillion spent gone with no return.

#MatchingMillions encourages a self tax of 20% on spending to create real power of wealth building and savings.  Starting today, those desiring to participate in the trend accumulated $1 for every $5 spent of “buying power’ — instant gratification — shopping.

DryerBuzz.com readers started already by creating their own self tax jars just to see at the end of the day how much they are robbing their future.  At breakfast some had already accumulated $2, lunch was another $2 to $4 dollars.  Dinner and evening entertainment spending waits as well as counting plans for the weekend. The top box office movie will enjoy receipts of $60 million or more.  Imagine 20% cash back.

Try the experiment for yourself.  Monitor your spending.  Self tax to see how much you can accumulate in a week.  Join the conversation which continues on twitter in the timeline for #MatchingMillions.  Look for more #MatchingMillions articles in our daily buzz and Wednesdays to help get over the hump to recovery.

Stop robbing your future. Start #MatchingMillions

At the end of the day, how much did you put away?

Matching Millions – It’s no secret bloggers are trendsetters. It seems we have become the be all to end all for brands. Can a blogger help match millions when it comes to supporting organizations with a community not necessarily known for being philanthropic . Keep in mind we said “known,” as in not promoted through media.

Yalanda P. Lattimore, DryerBuzz.com

Philanthropic African Americans get short end of the buzz when it comes their giving.  We intend to shine a light on givers and opportunities to give by continuing a Friday campaign. Formerly known as BlackFridayGiving, our campaign continues with the launch of #MatchingMillions. We are partnering with organizations, financial bloggers, and online communities to create buzz and match millions increasing the numbers of dollars, volunteers, followers and the like.

Giving is living at DryerBuzz.com.  Philanthropy in African American communities takes on a different tone and quite frankly requires a different language to engage giving.  Engagement goes beyond stats to find a realistic appeal for African Americans to get and stay involved.

African Americans are visual and appreciate the satisfaction of seeing immediately how their giving is received and utilized.  We intend to provide such with #MatchingMillions, a Friday campaign to encourage giving while living and spending. #MatchingMillions will add a consciousness to every dollar spent on hair and entertainment.  Followers will simply be encouraged to match millions spent over the weekend.

Organizations should have box office budgets.  Weekend movies topping at the box office split revenues derived from some four to five thousand communities. At post time, the top movie was Brave banking $66,323,594 from 4,164 screens aka communities out of a hundred films playing around the country.  Within these communities, Hosea Feed the Hungry tells us that 50 million Americans will be hungry tonight. Of that, 17M are children of which 600K of them live in Atlanta. The impact to serve immediate need lies within the budgets and volunteers.  We can impact budgets of organizations by #MatchingMillions.  Matching the average movie ticket could stamp out hunger.

Each Friday as you follow the buzz, look for #MatchingMillions hashtag in our timeline and headlines for opportunities to give and impact the needs of our community.

As you may know, you will also see #MatchingMillions on Mondays as we address household economics and personal finance to help get your money right to increase living while we increase your giving.

We are happy to welcome the following partners to #MatchingMillions.  Hosea Feed the Hungry serves as our first organization partner, and we have encourage two of our regular sponsors to join the efforts.  Please follow them on twitter and enjoy their content contributions at DryerBuzz.com

Formerly BlackFridayGiving, #MatchingMillions connects followers directly with organizations. Millions refers to numbers and consist of but not limited to monies contributed direct to organizations, volunteers, web visits, and followers to impact needs of our communities.  Additionally, we encourage our sponsors to give back and join the force of #MatchingMillions.
