Martin Luther King March Committee Announces January 11-19 Public Activities

Atlanta – The Martin Luther King March Committee announces details of planned activities for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration 2009. Events kick-off on Sunday, January 11 with a Fellowship Service at Zion Grove Baptist and culminating on Monday, January 19 with the Annual MLK March and Rally immediately following the Ecumenical Service at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Davidson County Events planned for MLK holiday

the-dispatch.com – The celebration will mark the 23rd anniversary of the King National Holiday. The local theme is “Renewing the Call to Peace and Justice.”

The committee has also announced the recipients of the 2009 MLK Community Service Award: Elder Marshall McCoy of Zion Tabernacle F.B.H. Church of God of the Americas in Thomasville and the Rev. Odessa McCoy of Gray’s Chapel F.B.H. Church in Salisbury.

One of the highlights of the celebration will be the ninth annual “Oratorical Contest” at Rich Fork Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17. King was an advocate for equality in education, and this major event is the organization’s effort to help bring to pass one of King’s dreams.

Saturday – January 31, 2009 12 noon – Fayetteville Street Durham. Grand marshal will be Dr. E. Lavonia Allison, president – Durham committee on the affairs of black people.  The Parade will proceed down Fayetteville Street, passing Hayti Heritage Center, Stanford L. Warren Public Library, NCCU and other historic landmarks and ending at Fayetteville Street and Elmira Avenue.

King Week at Emory

December 24, 2008


King Week at Emory will host comunity service projects, chapel service, forms and more.  “Remembering Martin Luther King Through Service.” Volunteers will plant trees in the Martin Luther King, Jr. historic district in conjunction with Trees Atlanta and reflect on their service over lunch.

“Women Talking With Women: Reflecting on Race, Ethnicity, and Culture.” Our 13th annual open discussion in celebration of King Week at Emory, featuring women of different backgrounds and experiences sharing and creating conversations with one another.

“Boys To Men: A Dialogue for Change.” Following introductory comments about this “year of change”, area high school participants of the S.O.U.L. Poem and Essay contest will present their work and winners will be announced and awards given. Intergenerational groups will be formed to discuss the theme “Change” as a catalyst to success and the impact of positive change within a community.

City of Plano established January 17, 2009 as A “Day of Non-Violence”

The MLK Celebration Committee has established January 17, 2009 as A “Day of Non-Violence” in memory of Dr. King’s legacy. We are soliciting the support of the City of Plano, Plano Police Department, Plano Fire Department, community groups, associations, clubs, organizations, PISD, Collin College, local and area businesses, corporate partners, veterans, seniors, churches, other religious organizations, state officials, state legislators, US Senators & Congressmen, and news media (paper, TV, Radio, Internet). We need or welcome everyone to support this event in memory of Dr. King. The desired outcome is for this to resonate throughout the entire State of Texas and hopefully throughout the Nation.

This coming January 19, 2009 marks the 3rd official commemoration of Martin Luther King Day since Governor Fitial signed the bill enacting Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official CNMI holiday. In honor of this approaching Commonwealth-wide commemoration, the African American Cultural Preservation Committee (AACPC) is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Essay & Elocution Contest open to all students of the CNMI.

Valparaiso University’s 2009 MLK Day Celebration

Valparaiso University’s 2009 celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place January 16 to 22. The celebration will feature a prominent scholar of labor and civil rights, a service day and numerous programs related to Dr. King’s ideals. The 2009 celebration will focus on the theme “The American Dream: A Dream Yet Unfulfilled?”

Colorado – MLK Day 2009 Student Walk-Out

Animas SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) is calling on students and faculty around the nation to organize a mass walk-out for MLK Day 2009, Monday, January 19th, under the banner of “IF THEY WON’T GIVE US THE DAY OFF, WE’LL TAKE IT!”, in conjunction with anti-racist events such as direct actions, protests, rallies, panel discussions, skills shares, teach-ins, occupations, concerts, film screenings, etc.
