Twitter Me This: Are you in the next wave to join twitter?

June 16, 2009

We caught what some might call the first or second wave in joining twitter.  So when we asked the question “what is twitter?” Nobody knew.  Not even Google.  There were not a million or so results in the search engines so we had to figure it ourselves.  It wasn’t a community, just a simple way to update our status on our website and myspace.  We were in the process of moving our blog a couple years ago circa 2007 I believe.  The new software wanted to know our twitter account.  We setup the account anyway just to grab our name and kept it moving.  The lone widget for twitter barely worked if at all. There were probably new gadgets competing to do the same.

A couple of years later, twitter has almost replaced the telephone.  It’s provided a vehicle for television to talk back and include the viewer’s voice.  Twitter has given new meaning to real time.  Today twitter is a valuable part of our website and how we spread the buzz. We were one of the first to host a “twitter viewing party for popular TV shows.” Now television is looking at how to build a viewer metric based on twitter.

In a recent weekend, a client rented our local twitter account for co-branding of their comedy club. During that same time with a break from tweeting, we spent the time developing a twitter strategy for one of the largest African American networking organizations, FraserNet’s PowerNetworking which will launch twitter as a customer service and communication tool for their upcoming conference in Atlanta.

Yes we took sides in the Ashton Kutcher vs CNN race to a million followers.  More importantly, we joined the few on mission to help save a life in finding a possible donor for little Jasmina Anema.  From a simple tweet, we met and connected with Tamu Townsend having just lost her brother who tweeted about their fight to find a donor.  Together we tweeted and launched a twitter campaign to reach African Americans with “How Being African American Can Help Save A Life.”  Months later thanks to everyone searching, tweeting, facebooking, campaigning, and testing – a donor was found.

Yet, people are still asking “what is twitter?” Once joined, they ask “where is everyone?” When we first joined there was no one to make it simple.  Tweeting was trial and error.  We learned the hard way how to answer “what are you doing?”  Some things people just don’t want to know.  However, we’ll tell you again.  Yes you need to twitter.  If you answered a recent questions with “I don’t know.”  You definitely need to twitter.  So get ready the next wave is coming.  So that its not a wipeout for you, we’ve put together our “Twitter One Sheet” to get you tweeting in the twittersphere.

In it we answered the first question of how to answer “what are you doing,” and a few more that will follow.  Plus we shared a few tips from the many questions we receive daily about twitter, such as how to graduate to mobile and other applications to make twitter more interactive so you can watch the world.

Enjoy and we’ll see you in the tweets. follow @DryerBuzz | follow @myATLevents | create a buzz with @thePitchBlast

UsTalkNetwork.com — When accusations of rape and sexual assault were raised at Spellman College against men from Moorehouse College, they were met with suspicion and silence.Laura Rahman documented the ensuing activity which led to campus-wide discussions which focus on the need for the Black community explore gender roles and our attitudes toward them.

Laura Rahman is a social activist, independent documentary filmmaker, and public speaker. Her work includes, BROKEN SOCIAL CONTRACTS and discusses how two historically black colleges confront accusations of sexual assault on their campus. Her body of filmography also includes, “Breaking Silences” and “A Journey Shared”.

Broken Social Contracts depicts the necessity for conversations in the black community on our relationships. Can dialogue go beyond music videos and lyrics? Activists, students, and scholars weigh in our community’s gender roles. Through her lens as an African Diasporan woman she desires to impact our global society by providing narratives of the those voices often not heard. Her passion is to produce videos that inspire and awaken our consciousness by making seen the invisible.

In Uptown Notes a reviewer wrote, “I love the metaphor that is developed in the trailer, likely in the whole film, of a social contract that positions Spelman in silent service and allegiance to Morehouse and any rupturing of that contract somehow is heretical, anti-Black male or even really anti-Black.”  To learn more about Laura: laurarahman.com

Tyler Perry Audience Not Letting Go of Madea

February 26, 2009

QuickBuzz Commentary – Y. Lattimore

AP Youtube Embed - Visit www.Youtube.com/AP

DryerBuzz – She made $40 Million dollars in the middle of recessions, with the highest numbers in unemployment looming over most states and at the brink of America’s economic collapse.  But if Tyler Perry could have put away Madea and made the movie we think he really wants to make, he could have tripled the box office.

A writer, director, and actor with free reign over his script, with his own studio, and big box office history, he has to have bigger dreams and more imagination than dawning a dress and hanging out in a cell as he did in Madea Goes To Jail.  Are we holding him back? Does his audience want more than a laugh, a wedding, and an happy ending?

It’s painfully obvious that Madea will not land Perry on the Oscar’s red carpet.  But now that he’s given Lionsgate too good fiscal quarters to look forward too with the Madea movie and subsequent DVD release, can he concentrate on taking his brand to the next level?

He has built it, let’s let him soar.

During the recent BET Honors and NAACP Awards, Tyler Perry showed overwhelming enthusiam for the election of President Barack Obama.  You could see the wheels turning in his head.  Tyler Perry seems ready and needs his audience to catch up.  While Madea may be his trademark and launching pad, its time for her or him to let go. Whomever has a hold on which we have no idea.  There is a next level far greater than where he’s come.  While Madea’s antics are funny and reminiscent, its time to regulate her to a few guess spots on TV. We need to let Perry take his talents and those of the great actors working him to the next level.

In Madea Goes To Jail, it was not easy watching Derek Luke, Keyshia Knight Pulliam and Oscar nominated Viola Davis play second string in what could have been our season’s best and a timeless movie in between Madea’s world. Why he sacrificed such a great script is incomprehensible. Next time, when we see TPS on the screen, we should be WOWed because we let her go and Perry grow.

Twitter Me This: Oscars Red Carpet and Awards Twitter Viewing Party

February 22, 2009

Yes we’ve got the twitter viewing party started.  We’ll be incogtwitto under @DryerBuzz for Sunday night’s Oscars and red carpets.  Follow #Oscars and #RedCarpet at http://search.twitter.com to keep up with viewers in real time.

Until twitter figures out revenue generation or major television events recognize the popularity of real time opinion, we might see the mojo again that we enjoyed during the election.  You’d think as much as TV advertising cost, sponsors would at least put some money behind real time ads that deliver real time traffic.  Sponsor the mojo folks.  Doh! they missed the boat again.
