Declare your independence ~ Click Here to PreRegister | Click Here To See Network in Progress

In a previous post, we asked is eight enough? A virtual question of where do we go from here? Today there are millions of blogs, news sites, etc. However, there seems to be fewer stories. At least fewer of the ones we want to buzz about. Stories full of potential, creativity, innovation, good news which remains our mission just as the first day we started.

What is life without growth and potential? What is life’s work without paying it forward, sharing of knowledge, filling a need. After attending George Fraser’s PowerNetworking, meeting wonderful people as well as mentors, we were inspired to take our work to the next level.

The experiences, potential, and some of the most amazing stories are out there. At the same time, there myths about how to marry offline and online to maintain personal relationships. Logging off to actually go to PowerNetworking was a hurdle for our team, but proved most successful. It was amazing as people commented to our team about putting a face with the work that we’ve done and the reputation we uphold.

African-centered public school co-founder plans walk from the school to Washington, DC

June 26, 2009

School’s Founder To Walk For African-Centered Education

Florida’s only African-centered public school today announced that its co-founder and current Board Chairman, Amefika D. Geuka will walk from the school to Washington, DC to dramatize the urgent need for African-centered education for children of African descent. Geuka and his colleagues have dubbed this venture a “Trek for African-Centered Education,” to be conducted from July 15th through August 15, 2009. In addition to gaining credibility for African-centered education, the walk is expected to raise money to close the funding gap for Geuka’s Joseph Littles-NGUZO SABA Charter School which completed ten years of continuous operation on January 20th of this year. Overall coordination and planning for the walkathon has been contracted to iZania, LLC based in Columbus, Ohio.

Geuka’s walk will cover 1,011 miles, with pledges being sought for every mile walked by him and dozens of expected collaborators along the route. Geuka and surrogate walkers plan to average 33 to 35 miles per day, requiring 10 to 12 hours. Walkers will depart from the school at 5829 Corporate Way in West Palm Beach at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, July 15th, and culminate on or about August 12th with ceremonial stops at the U.S. Department of Education and White House where prepared statements in support of African-centered education will be read. African-centered schools in the nation’s capital will be asked to host a victory rally after the statements have been read.

Both President Barack Obama and his Secretary of Education Arne Duncan have spoken strongly in favor of public charter schools, which are designed to explore creative and innovative approaches to educating students who do not fare well in traditional public schools. Geuka and other advocates and practitioners of African-centered education argue that theirs is the most effective way to encourage children of African descent to aspire to be successful in education and personal development. The African-centered approach to providing a strong cultural foundation for children of African descent is being adopted across the country by school districts, public schools, private schools, and charter schools. This pedagogical approach is gaining acceptance as an important and necessary component in the development of Black children. They draw parallels between the ‘ACE’ approach and the generally accepted contention by Jews and Catholics that their respective students learn best when their formal education is rooted in study and appreciation of their own heritage history, and culture.

Atlanta – In Atlanta, 1 in 4 of the city’s youth ages 16-21 lives in poverty. Each year over 18,000 people, (mainly women, teens and young children) are trafficked into the United States for the purpose of sexual exploitation or forced labor.

The Color Complex: Are African-Americans Still Divided By Skin Color – talkblack.net

June 2, 2009

TalkBLACK to host Atlanta’s premier discussion group for African-American professionals the age-old topic of skin color.

“I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves, and I take these differences and make them bigger. I use fear, distrust, and envy for control purposes. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies, and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On the top of my list is age but it is only there because it starts with an “A.” The second is COLOR or shade; there is intelligence, size, sex, size of plantation, attitude of owner, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, east or west, north, south, have fine or coarse hair, or is tall or short.”

talkblack.net - These are the words of Willie Lynch, who in 1772 allegedly shared this plan with his fellow slave owners about how to best divide and control his African slaves. Do you think his “plan” is still in play? TalkBLACK, Atlanta’s premier discussion group for African-American professionals, plans to explore the age-old skin color issues that persist within our community. Our talk will cover…

  • How we are still very divided by skin color (or are we?)
  • The color divide as it relates to gender
  • Is President Obama having an impact?
  • Is First Lady Michelle having an impact?
  • The roots of our skin color issues
  • The role that mass media & pop culture plays in this phenomena
Join us for a thought-provoking discussion.

SocialChangeTwit of the Day: @Original_Don tweeting the RCP Movement

May 7, 2009

At post time, @Original_Don is 417 tweets into a twitter addiction to change the world. Tweeting from sunny South Florida, he links the RCP Movement.

“Respect Yourself, Check Yourself, Protect Yourself” (RCP)” was started November 2006, in South Florida (Broward County) to expose and highlight the crisis our generation is facing with the HIV/AIDS virus, particularly, black communities (*stats as shocking as 1 in 35 infected rate). After the “Silence is Death” report came down from Tallahassee in 2006, pointing out the high numbers of infected Blacks in Florida; some eyes opened up and hence the birth of RCP. RCP is a social marketing campaign created by Rize & Shine, Inc. a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes, markets, and advertises public awareness of the risks associated with HIV/AIDS.  Read More

Org Awards Exploratory Team Announced

April 23, 2009

Seeing Is Believing — An exploratory team is now forming to create an embodiment for the recognition of the unsung hero.  With a passion for community organizing and continued support for charitable organizations and foundations, Yalanda Lattimore and a developing team will bring to fruition “The Org Awards.”

The team will explore the boundaries and deciding factors as to how recognition will be giving to local or national unsung heroes.  A few of the deciding factors will cover if the awards will reach beyond the “Seeing is Believing” headlines of DryerBuzz; beyond Atlanta; or reach into the realm of social networking.  Another task now before the team is the selection process.

With the growth of and as a leader in social networks, the Internet will no doubt play a major role in all consideration.  As the process and vision become more clear and defined, updates for The Org Awards will located online at www.OrgAwards.org.

Social Networks Not the Place for Social Change for African Americans?

April 11, 2009

African Americans are narrowing the digital divide, but filling it with what?

DryerBuzz.com Commentary Y. Lattimore – We’ve spent the last twenty (20) years at the fore-front of the coming age of technology, all be it to say waiting for African Americans to catch up.  Knowing that if ever a place existed to disseminate information, act or react as a cohesive group, or define some semblance of unity – the Internet would be the place.

During the first ten years, we watched the so-called digital divide.  In a previous wave of Internet growth (2002) the outlook of the divide was as such:

(2002 news.cnet.com) — More than half the population of the United States is now online, an increase of 26 million people in 13 months, and the number continues to grow. The report also shows that Internet use is continuing to increase for everyone regardless of income, education, age, race, ethnicity or gender. Even groups not historically “early adopters” are growing their online presence. For instance, the DOC report shows that 39.8 percent of blacks and 31.6 percent of Hispanics are online.

Today, watching online interaction in real time, we ponder if social networks will ever be the place for social change for African Americans? Perhaps its another five to ten years away.

(2009 – pewinternet.org) Some 39% of Americans have positive and improving attitudes about their mobile communication devices, which in turn draws them further into engagement with digital resources – on both wireless and wireline platforms.

Despite the availability of infinite information and access with PDA’s (personal digital assistants i.e. cell phones, iphones, blackberries etc), and despite Google, YouTube, Twitter, Ustream etc., the responsibility for social change still today falls in the hands of or on the backs of a few.

You can’t log onto the NAACP website and get 24/7 real time information. At post time, there are only four (4) NAACP twitter accounts with a total of 227 followers combined. There are also four accounts with the name Al Sharpton with a total of 55 followers.  National Urban League [ @NatUrbanLeague ] has 127 followers. Not to negate what each has done or is doing, but if we are not using the tools available, it’s no wonder the faith of the community waivers in time of need.

At post time, there have been three African American men (aside from President Obama) to take the top tweet spot at twitter — entertainers Ray J, Diddy and Snoop Dog.  Comments about Ray J and his reality show were purely driven by African Americans so the possibility to be on one accord exists.  There were a couple of others that we won’t mention as they were trending because of criminal activity.  At the same time, the exploding agenda that should be trending amongst African American online but the trail runs dry.

Change could come.  We’d like to know and see from this explosion of African Americans narrowing the digital divide in 2009 that there will be social change.  That today’s infinite access will:

But here’s what we’ll do, beyond our daily headlines:  as we continue to monitor African Americans in real time, we continue this post below in the comment section with real time updates and links. One thing we have learned in this process is that change, though inevitable, takes time and must be desired.  Sometimes those looking for change, just don’t know where to look.

Daily Assault: Hey Burger King: It’s Sponge Bob Square Pants Not Square Butts

April 11, 2009

The Daily Assault – Thanks to Burger King, got to have “the talk” with the kids again.  They just turned the kids meal into a sex toy with a freakish commercial starring Sponge Bob “Square Butts”, Sir Mix A Lot, and the burger King. Didn’t we tell kids not to be enticed by strange people offering food, toys and cartoons and how it can put them in inappropriate situations? Sponge Bob was so innocent.
