Backed by members of Kappa Alpha Psi and Omega Psi Phi, historically black fraternities that both celebrated their centennials last year, 1911 United aims to raise $1.5 million toward training and organizing African-American voters in key battleground states to re-elect President Obama. Members of the two fraternities joined forces last year, officially forming the committee in December, after seeing that both organizations were running their own campaign volunteer-recruitment efforts at college homecoming events.

“We were thinking about how we could really honor the legacy of those brothers who got together 100 years ago, and we thought perhaps the best thing we could do is help re-elect our president,” Sinclair Skinner, committee treasurer, told The Root.

To achieve this goal, 1911 United plans to organize and deploy 10,000 volunteers to register at least 100 voters each and activate them to hit the polls. The PAC is focusing its efforts in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Colorado

Hair She Goes For the Holidays — Chef Shay Atkins knows a thing or two about frying turkeys. In fact she knows about 15 different things because that’s how many flavors her fried turkeys come! From jerk BBQ to Thai Coconut Curry to Peaches & Rum, Taco Fiesta or just plain old Southern Fried she may just well be the queen of turkey frying.

As a young entrepreneur and owner of the Chicago-based Creative Turkey Cuisine (CTC) restaurant, Atkins has a huge holiday cut out for her. In addition to her holiday orders, she intends to give away over 1000 turkeys to needy families this season, feeding 5000 families.

With the launch of her First Annual Creative Turkey Cuisine Fundraiser, Atkins is offering the public several opportunities to assist with reaching her heart inspired goal. Individuals can sponsor a family or families directly or donate to participating organizations and businesses who have committed to the CTC effort. In addition, organizations and businesses can select to become involved in the effort.

A budding business women, Atkins was the grand prize winner of the Elevator Pitch Competition at the 2010 Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference. With a passion for helping people and feeding them great food she opened Creative Turkey Cuisine after her win. Creative Turkey Cuisine is the very first exclusive, all turkey and vegetarian catering company and restaurant providing clientele with choices for a healthier lifestyle. Her 15 flavors of signature fried turkey are available for shipping during the holiday season and she has plans to open additional locations in Washington, D.C., Atlanta and California in 2012.

“Healthy food is a fabulous form of happiness and during the holidays, happiness and food are not things that everyone can take for granted. The Annual Creative Turkey Cuisine Fundraiser is another vision I am determined to make a reality. The goal is 5000 families but with a little holiday spirit, I’m hoping we can feed even more,” expresses Atkins.

#BlackFridayGiving — Each Friday in 2011 efforts to increase awareness of an online mission to support charities and education were stepped up with a twitter campaign knows as #BlackFridayGiving.

Comparisons were made between weekly entertainment spending versus the support of national orgs and charities as it relates to African American buying power. “There is no power in buying,” says Yalanda Lattimore, editor of DryerBuzz.com and creator of the campaign. “With wealth gaps at record levels and African Americans hovering around just $5,000 in assets, it is time to rethink where power lies. We need to support our safety nets. If life were a movie, we would freely give $60 million dollars a week. Same as if life were measured by hair care spending, roughly another $60 million a week.”

Turning Fridays into #BlackFridayGiving, this year #BlackFriday 2011 is no different especially in present economy. The campaign hopes to encourage more to give before spending. “Just as people are planning their mad dash to stores to catch sales, we hope our readers will also choose charities and education initiatives to support,” continues Yalanda. “And not just for the holiday season, but we hope readers begin to build relationships with orgs and charities to support all year long.”

BlackFridayGiving.DryerBuzz.com provides the buzz behind the buzz on organizations, charities, and educational initiatives to choose from on a local and national level. On #BlackFriday 2011, the site will conduct a live and interactive forum encouraging more involvement by promoting favorite orgs.

The Priceless Project strongly believes in Community Outreach. We will do monthly Community Outreach in Lancaster City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City and beyond.

The PRICELESS Project originated in 2007 when master’s level social worker Ruby L. Taylor began to internalize the pain and hurt her nieces and students faced because of family, social and educational circumstances. To support and encourage her nieces and students, she wrote a poem entitled “What Are You Worth?” Ruby used the poem for hurting teenagers in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania to help encourage each student to know he or she is PRICELESS. She took a special interest in young ladies and girls in 2011 when Rowena Dixon, a fellow co-worker, expressed a need to help young ladies understand their self-worth.

Growing up in the Bronx, New York, Ruby knows firsthand what happens when a young women does not feel worthy. As a result, she was on the verge of failing out of high school and living a life she did not desire. One day, Crystal Russell, a neighborhood friend, invited her to a dinner at the Marriot Marquis with the Attorney General Janet Reno. Ruby says, “That night, sitting with high-achieving students from various NYC public high schools exposed me to possibilities. I realized I was worthy of being invited to an event for honor students, even though I was not an honor student. I was worthy of graduating high school. I was worthy of attending college and going after my goals. The one night of possibility changed my life view forever. It took the life of pain and hurt and turned it into a life of healing, hope and joy. I realized I was priceless, no matter what.”

Supporters of Saving Our Boys that will be in attendance include Wells Fargo, The Call Me Mister Teacher Leadership Development program, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and Project GRAD USA.

The S.O.B. Campaign was developed to counteract the growing problems of increased dropout rates and decrease the prison to pipeline epidemic amongst black males by providing yearlong leadership/mentorship development institute that addresses key areas of performance; personal, academic and social.

The objective of the S.O.B. (Saving Our Boys) Summer Leadership Development Institute is to provide a week long residential experience, opportunity, access and support to young boys of color in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Community. The goal is to not only motivate young boys to be great but empower them to live in greatness as well-adjusted citizens, professionals and contributors to their community.

Join us for an evening of networking, while supporting and celebrating the future of one of Philadelphia’s most valuable treasures-young boys of color.

The S.O.B Campaign was created by leaders in the business, philanthropic and education community to uplift young boys, infuse culture and bring together communities in the City of Philadelphia.

The Buzz — The Atlanta Music Project is a tax-exempt, 501(c)3 organization with the mission of transforming the lives of Atlanta’s underprivileged children. Piloted at the Gilbert House, a cultural center located in Southwest Atlanta and operated by the City Of Atlanta Office Of Cultural Affairs, it offers an intense 5-day-a-week program of classical, orchestral training, a safe haven for at-risk youth, musical instruments for each child, field trips to various Atlanta cultural institutions, and instills confidence, creativity and ambition through practice and live concert performances.

AMP is co-founded by 28-year-old, Canadian-born bassoonist and AMP Executive Director, Dantes Rameau. His inaugural membership in the Abreu Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory of Music is where he studied El Sistema, the acclaimed Venezuelan National Youth Orchestra System that transforms the lives of children through music. Since El Sistema’s founding, over one-million kids have gone through the program. Despite 70% of the participants living below the poverty line, the program has spawned visionary global movement. Rameau envisions the same outcome for Metropolitan Atlanta’s underprivileged youth.
