The Clippings: BookBuzz – At home with Toni Morrison – HILLEL ITALIE – Yahoo! News

May 7, 2012

Clipped from Yahoo News — It’s Saturday and the 81-year-old Morrison is in a relaxed, informal mood, wearing a gray blouse and slacks and dark slippers, a purple bandanna tied over her gray corn rows, her laugh easy and husky with a pinch of “Can-you-believe-this?” You might mistake her for an ordinary neighbor ready for gardening until you see the pictures of her with James Baldwin, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Elie Wiesel among others, or learn that the low, wooden table by her chair was a prop from the film version of “Beloved,” her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

A 2012 photo released by Alfred A. Knopf, shows author Toni Morrison. As she gets older, Morrison says, the world becomes more interesting and more distressing. (AP Photo/Alfred A. Knopf)

Morrison does not need to worry about recognition in her lifetime. Nobel judges have honored her, and so has Oprah Winfrey, whose book club picks have helped Morrison’s novels sell millions. A Toni Morrison Society organizes conferences about her work and sponsors a Toni Morrison Book Prize. She not only has written children’s stories, but has been the subject of one, Douglas Century’s “Toni Morrison.” Two presidential contenders, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, sought her support in 2008 and Obama will soon present her with a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor. Her play “Desdemona,” a collaboration with director Peter Sellars and the Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traore, will be staged in London during the Summer Olympics.

The legend gets the glory; the real person works. Morrison has a new novel out, “Home ,” a brief, poetic story of Frank Money, a traumatized Korean War veteran who returns to the states in the 1950s. Morrison has long used fiction as a private and alternative history, whether the Civil War (“Beloved”), the 1920s (“Jazz”) or colonial times (“A Mercy”). With “Home,” she wanted to add some truth — about war, about racism — to the standard ’50s narrative.

“I was really trying to take off that scab, or that veil, or whatever it is off the ’50s,” she says. “We’re told that it was good times, post-war, GI Bill, people had jobs and the television was full of happy stories and so on, and that’s it.”

December 13, 2011

Sacred_tone_masters_jacqueline

Jacqueline Harris has successfully broken free of depression through painted portraits, chance meetings, important messages and therapeutic friendships with an amazing group of singers and authors. In penning her Magical Medicinal Memoir, Healing and Freedom Through These Sacred Tonemasters (Amargi Publishing Company $22.99 ISBN: 978-0-615-39000-0), Jacqueline explains how she was walking through life suffering from low self-esteem, fear, lack of trust while trapped in a cycle of mediocrity.

“Women don’t have to be stuck or held hostage by their emotions or fears. It’s my hope that after reading this book, others can embark on their journey to healing and freedom,” says Ms Harris. “This is my story of how on March 19, 2005, the world I existed in took a dramatic turn. On that day a beautiful black woman draped in turquoise and silver with braids and no shoes appeared to me and instructed me to have a picture painted and give a copy to each of the women on the picture.

Harris used the music, tones, lyrics, written words and miraculous encounters with Dr. Maya Angelou, Dr. Frances C. Welsing, Alice Walker, Octavia Butler, Anita Baker, Nancy Wilson, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Maysa Leak, Ledisi Young, Lalah Hathaway and Lizz Wright, to assist her on this successful journey to healing, freedom and living life to the fullest. Readers will enjoy the healing works of these authors and singers that Jacqueline used to mend the destructive emotions she was burdened with. Also, enjoy the color pictures included in the book.

Read how the universe lined up for Jacqueline to meet all of these greats in such miraculous ways within 5 months of the completion of each portrait.  Also enjoy how she was able to heal from fear, self-esteem issues, a closed heart and free herself from the self-imposed prison that she was trapped in with the help of the music, tones, written words, encounters with and therapeutic friendships with these revered women.

SnitchCraft: Urban Saga Resurfaces as Ebook as Drug Sentencing Reforms Reduce Prison Population | Edrea Davis | BookBuzz

November 7, 2011

Snitchcraft

When author Edrea Davis debuted her fictional saga, “SnitchCraft ” in hardcover back in 2007, everyone from readers to activists to academics took note of this creative approach to advocacy. Davis cunningly fused hip-hop with a civil rights agenda to offer a glimpse into the corrupt environment created by the use of informants and underscore the unfairness of racially biased sentencing guidelines.

Last year President Obama signed legislation reducing drug sentencing disparities, but the law was not applied retroactively.  Dogon Village Books celebrated the new sentencing guidelines becoming retroactive November 1, 2011, with the release of the ebook version of “SnitchCraft,” updated with new information and facts.

“I am happy about the progress made on sentencing reform. Reducing the disparity between powder and crack cocaine from 100-to-1 to 18-to-1 is a positive step,” said Davis, a volunteer with the November Coalition (http://www.november.org), an education foundation working to end the drug war injustice. “The release of my ebook at a time when thousands of federal inmates become eligible for release from prison is a reminder that if we continue to raise our voices for education over incarceration we will chip away at the remaining disparities and the corrupt snitch system as well.”

Praised by civil rights legend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery for, “shedding light on deep-rooted problems plaguing the Black community,” “SnitchCraft ” juxtaposes the themes of family, spirituality, and social justice against the backdrop of a popular Southern California nightclub battling escalating gang violence. It uncovers the street life escapades behind the dynamics of snitching, while questioning the morals and values that are often convoluted with the issue.

SnitchCraft ” pushes the boundaries of typical ‘urban lit’ fare however. Davis incorporated a unique “After the Book” section with a reader’s guide of discussion questions, suggestions on how to become active in your community, and an index of leading organizations focused on criminal justice reform and other issues impacting the Black community.

The engaging read even landed on the required reading list in a curriculum guide at the Yale National Initiative of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute.  According to the guide, the introduction to Criminal Justice course incorporated the book because it looks at the present day social phenomenon of snitching, police corruption and the use of paid confidential informants in solving crime.

BookBuzz: Engaging Black Seniors For Community Strengthening | Calling the Elders‏

August 24, 2011

BookBuzz! – As individuals pass through youth and into adulthood, there is also a stage past adulthood where the cumulative learning of a lifetime is embodied. This is called Elderhood, and although current systems in the United States have increasingly marginalized those in this group, traditional African societies throughout the continent and early African American communities understood the invaluable resources embodied within this life stage. In many traditional African societies, transitions from one life stage to the next – from birth through death – were marked with specific and predetermined rites of passage.

It was with this in mind that Dr. Maaskelah K. Thomas created and published an easy to read guide and toolkit: Calling the Elders: Reclaiming and Transforming Our Communities Through Elder Wisdom: A Guide and Toolkit for Developing Local Councils of Elders. It was designed for those interested in developing an important avenue for capturing and enlisting the resources of African American seniors for ongoing community strengthening and development. Envisioned as a rites of passage process for elder members the African American community and a structure for keeping them engaged, the Guide provides both rationale and process for implementing Councils of Elders in communities throughout the country and beyond. Based on a successful model currently operating in her own community, it includes an overview of the historical importance of Councils of Elders, as well as the building blocks of this functional model for institution building. Most importantly, it provides practical steps and processes for ways to engage the entire community in reconnecting the links that have historically strengthened African American communities.

With much in the media these days about the rapidly aging “Baby Boomer” generation, much less is mentioned that particularly focuses on African American Baby Boomers. Talk of the “good old days” when many in this group were coming of age fails to clearly reflect the lived experiences of those of African descent – experiences quite often different from those in mainstream America. Those experiences represent a dynamic resource for African American youth and adults, and also represent largely untapped opportunities for older African Americans to pass down a legacy of knowledge, experience and wisdom which could easily be lost forever.
