Legacy.com — The first black woman elected to the South Carolina General Assembly, Juanita Goggins of Rock Hill, has died. She was 75.

Goggins, a Democrat, was elected to represent the Rock Hill-centered House District 49 after court rulings forced changes in the makeup of State House districts in South Carolina.

She won the Democratic primary in the summer of 1974 against an incumbent, then defeated a Republican in the general election.

Goggins served three two-year terms before retiring from public life in 1978 with health problems. She had lived the past several years in Columbia.

Michael Blosil, the 18-year-old son of entertainer Marie Osmond, has died, authorities confirmed Saturday.

Blosil died Friday night, and his death was being investigated by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, said coroner's Lt. Brian Elias.

Officials could not comment on a report posted on ETOnline.com saying Blosil had jumped from his downtown Los Angeles apartment at 9 p.m. Friday and had left a suicide note.

Paul R. Jones, a collector of African-American art who donated troves of works to universities in Delaware and Alabama, has died. He was 81.Jones died in Atlanta on Tuesday after a brief illness, said University of Alabama spokeswoman Angie Estes. The university established an art collection in Jones’ name after receiving some 1,700 pieces valued at $5 million in 2008.

R&B icon Teddy Pendergrass has passed on.

A close family friend confirmed to the BV Newswire that the ailing crooner died tonight. The cause of death is unknown and details are pending at presstime. He was 59.

Mrs. Eunice Johnson, producer and director of the Ebony Fashion Fair and secretary-treasurer of Johnson Publishing Company, died of renal failure at her home in Chicago. She was 93.

New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will honor her work on January 11 as a philanthropist and fashion icon. The tribute, planned some time ago, was several months in the making.

“Mrs. Johnson elevated the image of Black women being fashion conscious, fashion forward and affluent,” said Kenneth Owen, assistant producer of Ebony Fashion Fair, who was handpicked by the fashion pioneer 26 years ago to work alongside her.

Cooper died Monday afternoon at her West End Atlanta home, where she lived since the 1930s. Cooper’s family said the 107-year-old slipped into a coma several days ago, but not before visiting one last time with loved ones.
