Listen to critcs if you want; miss Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and you’ll be mad
June 24, 2009
Take it from a bot virgin, Transformers 2 was excellent. The funny part for me was watching the faces in the theater. Surprised my 13 year old with midnight tickets opening day. My normal movie day is Friday at noon as I can’t stand the crowds. Omg were there crowds and lines galore. Of course we got out tickets at Fandango, allowing us to bypass the ticket line. However so did everyone else. We still had to stand in line just to enter the individual screenings.
Once inside, the very hyped crowd came to pin dropped silence as the previews faded to black. I was trying to get comfortable enough to tweet then doze off – but the sea of cult like faces, mostly males of ALL ages mixed with a few moms, wives, and girlfriends, made me want to wait and see more.
Two and a half hours later I wanted some more. Play it again Sam. Excellent movie. Shia LaBeouf is brilliantly funny with a nice switch up in his method. Certainly not bad on the eyes. Ramon Rodriguez and John Turturro were just off the freaking chain. Tyrese Gibsonwith his few lines and multitude of facial expression will get himself a role – what’s up with that brother? Do your thang. He brings the sexy as always.
Speaking of sexy. The tweets have taken Megan Fox straight to the gutter doing her a great disservice (I think). She held her own. You go girl.
No spoilers, but I’m still laughing and hearing the explosions. Coming out of the theater at 2:41 AM, was expecting to see a bot or two or world domination. They plugged “President Obama,” whereas the President escapes the madness like all presidents leaving the people behind.”
Lastly, why am I hearing this morning about racial undertones – forgetaboutit! Stop the madness. Put your money where your mouth is – just all over the place.
We don’t dish out stars. Excellent is about the best we can say without throwing the Michael Eric Dyson like thesaurus at you. Let it be enough that as stingy as I am with money, know that I’m too busy trying to find the new Optimus Prime action figure, video game, etc to go under the Christmas tree.

Twitter Me This: MTV Movie Awards
June 1, 2009
MTV Movie Awards aired Sunday, May 31, 2009. What a way to end the first half of the year. It can only get better from here. Forrest Whitaker who early this year announced the Academy Award nominees, took the stage to bring home a rendition of “my d–k in a box” and Eminem got as-d in the face from the air. Somewhere between to the low-lights, we turned the channel and just followed the tweets only. Since we thought the show sucked, figure we’d only skew the demographics by continued viewing. We followed the tweets, but they couldn’t entice us back to viewing.

CNN Losing Authoritative Voice to Social Media
May 27, 2009
CNN has given voice to social media and in the process, like print, has given away its “authoritative voice.” Why turn to CNN at all when you can get social media everywhere. The 24 hour news network has become 15 minute of repetitive soundbites and the fame goes to whatever twitterer or facebook from whom they borrow the news. Even myspace has been given a crutch by the network.
Perhaps the network should borrow a page from our forefathers and not give all the power to the people. They will turn on you or turn you off. The New York Post has create quite a buzz about CNN’s rating coming up short, namely Anderson Cooper. They throw in a few jabs at Roland Martin now filling in for Campbell Brown.
For the buzz behind the buzz, we turned to twitter where conversation about both anchors. At post time, in a 30 minute time frame, there were only two (2) tweets about Anderson Cooper.
TheVirtue: stopped following Anderson Cooper. You’re hot, dude. But your tweets are kind of boring and there are too many of them.
tylerphillip: Had to stop getting device updates from anderson cooper, he overtweets.
Well if that doesn’t say it all. We also checked tweets for Roland Martin. Is this not what CNN would do? Going once, going twice. We’ll take a shower and come back as the current tweets are four (4) hours old and from another news source’s twitterfeed.
We’re back. Zip nada tweet yet. But in some fairness to Martin, he’s most active on facebook where you can follow his nightly wardrobe selections with a topic or two.
Just as if we were watching CNN, we’re now bored with this topic. No wonder there is a CNN ratings dive.

TV One Unsung Returns for Black Music Month Profiling Florence Ballard, Minnie Riperton, Melba Moore and Shalamar
May 15, 2009
In celebration of Black Music Month, TV One will premiere each Sunday in June four new episodes of Unsung, its acclaimed original series of one-hour biographies that celebrates the lives and careers of successful artists or groups who, despite great talent, over the years have been under-recognized or under-appreciated. Everyone recognizes the name of Aretha, Whitney, Diana, Stevie, and Marvin. But the full picture of black music in America is much larger than those acknowledged superstars, and many of the greatest have failed to achieve that same level of superstardom.
Narrated by actor Gary Anthony Williams, Unsung will chronicle the careers of:
- Minnie Riperton – Best known for mega-hits Back Down Memory Lane and Lovin’ You, this sultry siren’s career and life were cut short after a three- year battle with breast cancer in the 1970s when she was only 31 years old. Classically trained in opera at Chicago’s Lincoln Center, she had a vocal range of nearly six octaves and before her mega-hit had forged a successful career singing and composing with the ground breaking ‘60s pop group Rotary Connection. After her cancer diagnosis, she went public instead of retreating, serving as the first African American spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. Premieres Sunday, June 7 at 8 PM ET, repeating at 11 PM, as well as Thursday, June 11 at 10 PM and Friday, June 12 at noon and midnight.
- Melba Moore – A tremendously versatile talent, she was a Tony Award-winning actress in her 20s, and a Grammy-nominated R&B recording artist in her 30s, and it seemed her career ascent was limitless until a series of devastating personal and financial setbacks knocked her out of the spotlight in the late 1980s. But Moore fought her way back and now devotes her talent to recording as a gospel artist, and even turned the dramatic details of her life into a successful one person show. Premieres Sunday, June 14 at 8 PM ET, repeating at 11 PM, as well as Thursday, June 18 at 10 PM, and Friday, June 19 at noon and midnight.
- Shalamar – This trio was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey. With hits like The Second Time Around and A Night to Remember, this group, most famous with vocalists Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett, was destined for long-term success, but constant member changes and the hugely successful launch of solo careers for two of the group’s members took its toll on the group’s long-term viability. Premieres Sunday, June 21 at 8 PM ET, repeating at 11 PM, as well as Thursday, June 25 at 10 PM, and Friday, June 26 at noon and midnight.
- Florence Ballard – The co-founder and shared lead singer of the Supremes was replaced as lead singer by Diana Ross when Berry Gordy decided that Ross’ voice could help the group cross over and appeal to white audiences. She never recovered from that decision, and Gordy dismissed her from the group in 1967. It took years before she recovered emotionally, and she spent much of her last years in poverty, dying a tragic death from a coronary thrombosis at age 32. Although the award-winning theater presentation of Dreamgirls and the critically acclaimed film are reportedly based on the life of Florence Ballard, Unsung finally tells her real story through the recollections of family and friends. Premieres Sunday, June 28 at 8 PM, repeating at 11 PM, as well as Thursday, July 2 at 10 PM and Friday, July 3 at noon and midnight.
The episodes are executive-produced by Arthur Smith, Kent Weed and Frank Sinton of A. Smith & Co. Productions. Mark Rowland is Co-Executive Producer. Executive in charge of production for TV One is Jubba Seyyid.

Cathy Hughes urges Bill HR848 would silence black radio
May 12, 2009
The Cut — Tuesday (05/12), Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One, Inc., the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast-company in the nation, went from show to show obviously upset about Bill HR848. In short, the Bill would require radio stations to pay performing artists for songs played added to what it now pays in royalty fees to music associations. The Bill is sponsored by Rep. John Conyers [D-MI] and according to govtrack.us has been referred to committee.
Particularly of concern to black radio because Bill HR848 would add another bill to cash strapped stations. Already a minority in the medium, the few African American owned stations could become fewer says key people of interest. Hughes appeared on Radio One talk syndicates to discuss the bill and urge listeners to interact with their representatives to stop the bill. Ballentine urged Gospel stations could be affected mostly.
Artists may be excited with the possibility of a new revenue stream, but if it comes, would it be at the expense of black radio.

Embed Junkie: Mos Def on House [Hulu.com]
May 11, 2009
We’re just excited about the embed feature at Hulu highlight in their new commercial spots with Dennis Leary. What better video to share than Mos Def portraying a patient on House. In this episode, House finds himself hospitalized with a patient doctors presume is physically unresponsive. A few seconds observed by Dr. House, they realize the patient (Mos Def) is very much alive. So why is he “locked in” his body. Great episode. Watch and enjoy.
