What’s Up with that Brother Johnathan Rodgers | TV One | 2009 B&C Hall of Fame | Congratulations

The president of a major network’s station group, Johnathan Rodgers, President and CEO, TV One, has left a mark on a generation of reporters, producers and executives. “I have been a member of NABJ [National Association of Black Journalists] for 20 years, and when you talk to African-Americans who are executive producers, news directors, GMs, they look to pioneers like Johnathan as setting the example for what it is that we want to achieve in this industry,” Martin says. “There is no doubt about that.”

19th Annual Broadcasting & Cable Hall Of Fame AwardsIn 2002, Rodgers received a call from Radio One CEO Alfred Wiggins, who was looking to get into the African-American cable space. A giant from another walk of the entertainment world, Quincy Jones, who was familiar with Rodgers, had told Wiggins, “If you’re going to do that, there’s only one brother you want.”

While BET was serving the 18-34 African-American demo, Rodgers says that “there were so many dissatisfied African-American adults because [BET] didn’t have a channel for them.” And Rodgers—who could easily have spent his later years on the golf course—was drawn to the challenge of TV One and envisioned a channel where audiences could see stories of African-American life and culture that were more representative of the way they actually lived.

“So many people’s images are based on what they read or see in the media,” Rodgers points out, adding that TV One represented an opportunity to “do something good, bring about change in our society, to raise up in the eyes of the rest of society a group of individuals.”

One year after launching the Black Boys of Distinction mentorship program to change the negative statistics of black male youth, Pastor Tommy Quick says we are organizing the Project I Can 2 Symposium to continue to raise awareness about the importance of community-wide participation to help save black boys. It will take place at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, July 31 and August 1, 2009 with the theme, “Creating Positive Futures for Black Boys.” During the symposium, Pastor Quick, Dr. Steve Perry and David C. Miller will serve as the keynote speakers. Several workshops providing applicable information and tools for those who want to assist will also take place. This event is free and open to the public.

In addition to increasing awareness of the issues and challenges facing black males as they develop, the symposium seeks to increase parents’ ability to effectively raise black young men, enroll more young men in the BBOD program, recruit additional mentors and strengthen partnerships/collaborations within the community.

The Project I Can 2 Symposium will take place in Wofford College’s Leonard Building. It will begin 8:00 am with continental breakfast and registration. Opening ceremonies will be at 9:00 am.

JoeTheFuture.com: How does one relate to Michael Jackson?

July 8, 2009

Buzz it

Can you imagine being born and with every breath you take, you create a special moment for someone else?  Imagine you just simply like singing and every song you sang remains forever in someone’s heart.

Imagine if every where you went, someone knew your name and you had to acknowledge them back?  You would not be able to walk straight ahead eyes forward or smirk at a passerby. You couldn’t be mean and not say hello.

Imagine if you heard the cries of the hunger and you couldn’t ignore.  Imagine if you actually heard the pain of the world and just had to do something about it.  Imagine you were able to interact with people who looked nothing like you, came from no where near where you came from, but because you were kind to anyone, you found you had something in common?

I think that is how you begin to relate to Michael Jackson.  We can only imagine…
