The Cut with that Brother! Michael Eastman Launches Urban Victory Network Web Platform For Black Filmmakers | Film Festival July 15th – August 30th
May 8, 2012
Urban Victory Network Inc.(UVN) today launched a new online delivery platform for global black film at www.urbanvictory.com. Michael Eastman, CEO of Urban Victory, believes the movie industry is long overdue for a black film revolution leveraging the latest online technologies. “Many excellent films that premiere at regional and international black film festivals never get distribution beyond the festivals. America and the world are being deprived of some really fantastic films,” says Eastman, a Harvard University and Harvard Law graduate.
Urban Victory aims to change that. “We will host an online film festival this summer and at the conclusion of the festival offer filmmakers 70% of net revenue on our ad supported and subscriber distribution platforms,” says Eastman. UVN has issued a call for film submissions for their online film festival scheduled to start in July. Filmmakers may submit short films(less than 40 minutes) for the festival for free until May 15 at urbanvictory.com or on Withoutabox. After that, they will be charged a modest fee to make a submission.
Filmmakers who submit films and are accepted for the festival will have the opportunity to win up to $2000 in prize awards. UVN will also give away a pair of regional black film festival passes to three lucky online subscribers to the festival worth up to $200 for providing feedback and input on the films featured.
Films by or about African Americans and people of the African descent rarely make it to the big screen. Last year, only six of the top 300 grossing films were produced by black filmmakers. Eastman continues, “With the advent of digital video cameras and editing, production of film by African Americans, Africans, Afro-Brazilians, and Afro-Caribbean people has exploded. Nigeria, the largest African country, has the second largest film industry in the world in terms of annual film production (2400 films), placing it ahead of the U.S. and behind India.”
“Online audiences will be blown away by the superb quality of these films that typically only get an audience at the 40 or so black film festivals held worldwide every year,” says Eastman, who has worked in the online media space for the last 15 years, including three years founding and managing startups and five years at RealNetworks, the company that pioneered the development of online distribution technologies for audio and video.

The Cut with that Brother! 35th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival (May 26-28) Signature Artwork by Corey Barksdale
May 7, 2012
Signature artwork for the 35th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival is by artist Corey Barksdale, Camille Russell Love, Director of the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs announced in April. “The vibrant scene of a swinging band, set against a city backdrop, evokes the feeling of celebration that we share at the festival in Piedmont Park. Corey has captured that setting, in the heart of Atlanta, and the euphoria of the music.”
Today Barksdale’s work is seen in art shows across the U.S. Not only do his paintings hang in clubs, businesses and private collections, his striking large-scale murals have also brought him a lot of attention and numerous commissions. He recently completed a 30 foot-high mural for the Beltline, Atlanta’s ambitious urban redevelopment project. Rob Brawner, the project’s program director, was impressed and had this to say, “Corey was able to bring the Atlanta Beltline alive through his colorful interpretation of the project.”
To pursue a career as an artist, he moved from Nashville to Atlanta to attend the Atlanta College of Art and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1994.
Inspired by music, Barksdale often listens to jazz greats Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane while working, creating more than 30 paintings with a jazz theme. “Coltrane is improvisational, but with a structure to his sound,” he explains. This can be said of Barksdale’s art as well. His paintings are combinations of colorful, flowing lines that seem to dance and move across the canvas. There is an almost liquid feeling to his work and yet it all comes together to create a nightclub jam session, dancers striking a pose, or a busy street scene.
The 35th Annual Atlanta Jazz Festival is presented by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. The festival will showcase jazz legends and exciting new talent in venues throughout Atlanta during the entire month of May, culminating with three days in beautiful Piedmont Park over Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28.

The Cut with that Brother! Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer Gets Release Date: August 10th, 2012 | 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks Partners with Variance Films
April 26, 2012
The Cut — 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks announced yesterday that the company will undertake its first independent distribution effort with founder Spike Lee‘s Brooklyn coming-of-age story, RED HOOK SUMMER. 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks will partner with New York-based Variance Films for the theatrical release, which will begin August 10th, 2012 in New York City theaters, expanding to the top 30 markets throughout the month of August.
“From my very first joint back in 1986, SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, I have been an independent filmmaker, and even today I still am,” said Spike Lee. “I’m elated to join forces with Variance Films for the independent distribution of my new joint RED HOOK SUMMER. We look forward to getting this film into the marketplace, where we believe 100 percent that there is a starving audience for American independent films like RED HOOK SUMMER.”
“Variance’s sole mission is to ensure filmmakers retain their rights and their power,” said Dylan Marchetti, founder of Variance Films, “and I can’t think of a filmmaker that would make better use of both than Spike Lee. Spike is truly one of the godfathers of independent filmmaking, and RED HOOK SUMMER is an entertaining, yet thoughtful, film that says something we think needs to be said. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Spike and his team to ensure that audiences across the country will be experiencing this fantastic film with their friends and family.”
VideoBuzz:
The latest in Spike Lee’s “Chronicles of Brooklyn” (which also include SHE’S GOTTA HAVE IT, DO THE RIGHT THING, CROOKLYN, CLOCKERS, and HE GOT GAME), RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale, a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook. Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster–until he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined.
The deal was brokered by Dylan Marchetti of Variance Films with CAA and Robert Strent of Grubman, Indrusky & Hireon on behalf of 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks.

The Cut with that Brother! Dr. Dwayne L. Buckingham Gives 5 Reasons Why Women Should Not “Think Like A Man” | Listen
April 24, 2012
As heard on Great Debates: Think Like a Man! But What is He Thinking with host Yalanda Lattimore
Dr. Buckingham strongly advises that before taking advice from anybody the listener should research and check credentials of those who are providing blueprints based on their personal experiences. Dr. Buckingham explains that human behavior and development is much more complex than what is discussed on radio shows, blogs, and in barber and beauty shops.
From a professional assessment, Dr. Buckingham gives five reasons why women should not “Think Like a Man”:
1. Women should not “Think Like A Man” because men often think that minimizing and repressing emotions is acceptable. While both women and men experience emotional distress, men’s coping styles are usually very passive in nature when it comes to dealing with emotions. Men are repeatedly instructed to deny or minimize emotions; therefore men often ignore and avoid dealing with them until they become unbearable.
2. Women should not “Think Like A Man” because men think that expression of emotions is a sign of weakness. Expressing sensitive or nurturing emotions, or giving freely, is not praised or encouraged among men. The pressure to maintain masculinity and to remain strong often creates emotional roadblocks for men. As a result, feelings of remorse, forgiveness, sadness, and empathy are overshadowed by feelings of self-pity, anger, embarrassment, pride, and loss.
3. Women should not “Think Like A Man” because some men think that it is okay to make decisions with their “little heads” instead of their big heads. “Get all the sex, you can get” mindset appears to be the driving force that dictate most men’s behavior. Sexual dominance is often praised and encouraged among men and is used to demonstrate power and control. This mindset is the root cause of adulterous behavior among some men and is significantly contributing to the decline of the institution of marriage.
4. Women should not “Think Like A Man” because men think that it is acceptable to think then act. This is unhealthy and flawed thinking because the most important aspect of human bonding and understanding is centered on emotional intimacy, not intellectual or behavioral. A man or woman who operates without processing from the heart will often fail at developing meaningful relationships. Decisions to act should not occur without processing thoughts, feelings and behaviors (Think-Feel-Do).
5. Women should not “Think Like A Man” because some men think that they can play games and get positive results in their relationships. How defective is this thinking? Even the bible says, “You Reap What You So” (Galatians 6:7). If a relationship is started by playing games, those in the relationship will become a game. If a relationship is entered based on deception, the relationship will be maintained based on deception.
On May 10, Dr. Buckingham will release his new book, Qualified, Yet Single: Why Good Men Remain Single to reveal the abnormal thought patterns behind men’s emotions and actions, which women should not try to emulate.
According to Dr. Buckingham, Steve Harvey’s claim that women should stop asking other women how to keep a man and take the advice from men on how to keep a man is baseless. Many studies have shown that men are dealing with the same issues as women of desiring relationships, but unable to achieve them. According to the U.S. Census there are over 40 million men who have never married. In his upcoming book and film, Qualified, Yet Single: Why Good Men Remain Single, Dr. Buckingham gives an intimate look into the hearts and minds of several successful Black men who are being challenged in their pursuit of love due to their personal issues.
Dr. Dwayne L. Buckingham is a renowned psychotherapist, motivational speaker, author and activist who provides individual and marital therapy to military soldiers and their families assigned to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of R.E.A.L. Horizons Consulting Service, LLC located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
