DryerBuzzonWAOK | If rap worst than racism then country music is what? Playlist of apathy?

February 19, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — For whatever reasons, Geraldo Rivera decided to speak on racism — as it relates to blacks and browns and violence.  Apparently he needed to deflect and be all up in his feelings after appearing on Celebrity Apprentice — where the Latino man lost to the white female.  That’s the conversation I was waiting for Geraldo to have.  But that’s not what he wants to buzz about. Doesn’t he want to tell us how immediately cast mates were ready to take him out?  Doesn’t he want to tell us about losing to a white female. What about Geraldo Rivera’s position in media as an “American attorney, journalist, author, reporter, and talk show host” who has had little to no impact on the news narrative aimed at black and brown people — especially males” — whereby perception of black and brown remains at an all time low?

Geraldo didn’t want to talk about that. So, he deflected by throwing hip hop under the bus — echoing conversations we’ve had for the past decade when rap narrative changed from progressive to violence.  Media being what it is — his echo went around the word and black folk began to defend themselves and the genre. Buying into shame and stereotypes hook – line – and sinker. Why?

Where’s the push back — wanna hear it — here it goes.  If rap is worst than racism, then what is country music — playlist of apathy?  Listen and get ready for a great debate when Yalanda P Lattimore, DryerBuzz.com hosted WAOK Mornings.  Conversation continues in social media with #DryerBuzzonWAOK

DryerBuzzonWAOK | You Might Not Be Your Brother’s Keeper – His Struggle Proves That Is … | Listen

February 11, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — catch the buzz you missed when we opened up the topic to discuss James Robertson, the Detroit “Walking Man”, and what many have come to know as his daily struggle turned good fortune when a good samaritan intervened.  While some rejoiced that there are still good people doing good things in the world, others didn’t view the stories as news narratives wanted them to.  Some saw the story as propaganda used by some news networks to further portray black males in negative light.  As the first to call out #mediaapartheid, I can half agree, but it is stories like these that we want to see more of in media.

Sadly, most coming to help lift Robertson from his struggle didn’t look like him.  Which explains why we need to work on the village some more.  We found a great place to start when following the comment thread on a particular Facebook post.

Listen and enjoy a great debate

DryerBuzzonWAOK | It Takes a Village… to humiliate a child | Barber’s cruel cut goes viral | Listen #GreatDebates

February 6, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — Let’s just say when I hosted Derrick Boazman’s Too Much Truth, I was in extreme minority in calling a barbers viral cut cruel and unusual punishment. Listen as callers weighed in great disagreement, but at the same time, shared their own history of humiliating punishments and how such affected them — for the rest of their lives.

A mother turned to the village, her neighborhood barbershop, for help with her misbehaving child. Did the village get it right?  I thought rather than an embarrassing cut, the kid should work at the barbershop.  Can’t imagine a parent walking around with their kid wearing such a scarlet hair cut? Our kids are already misinterpreted as villains, now we’re going to mark them ourselves?
