Hair She Buzz | Tavonia Evans to Judges “Don’t judge babymama by cover” | Plus Fly Chicks say girls need to be heard | Two campaigns launch “Listen” mission

April 19, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — Hair She Buzz — It was time for a #LanguageofWomen episode on DryerBuzz on WAOK.

Listen was the operative word when Tavonia Evans stopped by to tell us about her campaign #GodLovesMeNoMatterWhat launched as result of her battle in and out of court with her children’s father.  She says women are now fighting to be heard and not judged or at least judged as fairly as her children’s father.  Did tables turn on women?

Then came Fly Chicks with #TalkDownListenUp campaign for teen girls and families.  Hear how they are encouraging households to listen to the girl in the family — and encourage her.  Stay tuned for full updates on their current events.

Also, listen how men responded to what the women had to say in this engaging #LanguageofWomen episode of #DryerBuzzonWAOK.

DryerBuzzonWAOK | Combating Bad Media Optics and Narratives for Black Males | Great Debates – Police and Media Coverage

April 13, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — The challenge, should you choose to accept it, combat bad optics for Black Males.  In this #LanguageofMen episode of DryerBuzz on WAOK, we started with current perception and began working our way to a solution — language being an important key factor.  Media being the culprit of influence, debate as our weapon of choice, we arrived at the starting point — recognize opposition. Later we came to our first road block — child support — as it relates to many and to the #WalterScott case.  Views passionately expressed, we agreed to pickup the topic, right where we left off, with experts aboard, in our upcoming 4th Sunday #Fatherhood episode.

Plus, hear a report of our visit to Rev. Al Sharpton’s 2015 National Action Network convention in New York where we met widow of #EricGarner and heard from surviving family members of those who lost their life to militarized police tactics.

Catch the buzz you missed on-demand below.  Be sure to join us each Sunday for #DryerBuzzonWAOK

April 6, 2015

Cspan was in process of interviewing Bernard LaFayette, member of Southern Christian Leadership Conference National Board of Directors, during live open phone segment during Selma coverage.  Maria was one of the callers.

Five areas Maria harshly lays out which, in her opinion, ought to be focus of Black America instead of responding to randomness of racism:

  1.  Morality/Immorality in music videos
  2.  Respect tradition of laws
  3.  Speak in regular English
  4.  Volunteering and giving back

DryerBuzzonWAOK | Are churches robbing our wallets and our souls? #GreatDebates

March 27, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — Call it what it is — robbery!  Join Yalanda P Lattimore and DryerBuzz great debaters for a weekend debate with DryerBuzzonWAOK, Saturday 6-8 and Sunday 1-4 PM ET.  Topic up for debate: Are we robbing God or are churches robbing us?

Some say Creflo Dollar was wrong in every which way for soliciting $65 million dollars from his flock for a top of the line personal jet.  That amount could help church or community close the #wealthgap by eliminating members debt.  However, was Dollar wrong crowd-sourcing his flock?

Why do we expect so much from churches? Moreover, why do we pour so much into them? Church building funds have long since been a cash cow, but what does it benefit a community to have such a building on the block?

These are just some of the questions we’ll debate on DryerBuzzonWAOK.  Remember “debate is combat. You weapons are words. Debate is bloodsport. You must destroy your opponent,” from the movie Great Debaters. Don’t be afraid to come with it.  If you’d make a great debaters, join us live for DryerBuzzonWAOK Saturdays and Sunday.

DryerBuzzonWAOK | Empire – Hood or Hoodwinked? Highly rated show divides viewers

March 23, 2015

DryerBuzzonWAOK — Don’t get it twisted, everybody watches Empire.  Even those who say they haven’t seen it, offer up too much in rebuttal to be as clueless as they say when speaking about Empire. Wednesday nights, there are just as much engagement with friends trying to discourage viewers as there are those of us all caught up.  We took the topic to radio yet again, asking our followers and listeners — Is Empire hood, or are we hoodwinked?

Worried about season two and how the plot will thicken, we asked both sides why such strong convictions for OR against Empire?  Some say Empire is too hood and falls in negative TV category. Many say we’re doom to pay a price for watching, thus we’re hoodwinked.  Others like myself, wonder why television viewing has to become such an act of revolution. Clearly I fully understand ramifications of #mediaapartheid, but can we just watch TV?

Is #Empire just entertainment? Is it hood or are we hoodwinked? Take a listen to how audiences respond.
