Hair She Goes! Motivational Blogger Yalanda P. Lattimore Expands Learning Channel with New Books | Encourages Others to Bind Their Blogs

August 16, 2011

There is a new trend in the business of blogging.  Approaching ten years in the game, for Yalanda P. Lattimore, life is about coming full circle.  Where do we go from here has an easy for her.  Connect the circle.  What does a blogger do with ten years of content, contacts, and hindsight.  We bind our blog and encourage others to do the same.

At the start of 20111, we launched our learning channel at Learn.DryerBuzz.com to share our wisdom and hindsight and pioneers in new media.  Out of that content has come the first book Create Buzz When Starting a Business: 27 Answers to FAQs About Social Media and Networking to be used as a tool to help bring more organizations, businesses and bloggers online.

But why stop there says Yalanda. “Looking at our content, we intend to take binding our blog to higher level. We have so much wonderful content and stories in our archives that could encourage generations to come.  We intend to publish the content is a succession of coffee table books, ebooks, videos and more. Just the features on women in our Hair She Goes! features would make an exciting book to browse courage and confidence.  The hard part is selecting the first group of stories for the next book.

We have spent a decade carving out a distribution channel to tell stories at Sistributions, publishers of DryerBuzz.com, that often get left on the news wires.  In celebrating 10 years in media, its time to come full circle.

What is Leadership? | Learn.DryerBuzz.com

July 10, 2011

True leadership is wisdom with a reach or following.  One could say that leadership is a state of accomplishment in something that others have tried or want to attempt.  There is always someone at the top, out front, or willing to take the lead.  A leader might exude leadership because they have more confidence. It takes confidence to stand out in the crowd or boldly represent this or that issue.  Leadership is a conscience heard above the noise causing a person to act or do more. Leadership is finding, presenting, and sharing opportunities. Leadership is accepting responsibility.

Leadership can be right or wrong, negative or positive.  Leadership is influence. Leadership is issue oriented.  It’s following is targeted.  Leadership is accountable. Leadership is focused.

Leadership Skills

  • Attentive Listening
  • Needs Assessments
  • Coaching
  • Communication
  • Development
  • Team Management
  • Ability to advance ideas
  • Approachable
  • Empowering
  • Task Delegation

You might possess leadership skills if you feel the need to act when you see something is wrong; if you feel the overwhelming need to speak when others are quiet; or stay when others leave.  You might be a leader if you:

  • find yourself with a following
  • are often quoted
  • are often recommended or nominated
  • if friends or family turn to you
  • if your opinion is often sought
  • if others emulate you

Some take leadership seriously or consider it a calling though some lead their following astray.  Leadership is highly sought after.  Millions are looking or it everyday.  There are conferences month after month trying to show you how to find leadership inside yourself, on your team, or in that thing you love and desire to be or do.  Leadership is YOU whether you become it or support it.

AEIOU’s of Social Media | Learn.DryerBuzz.com

June 5, 2011

Like parenting, with social media, if you put too much emphasis on becoming friends you could lose authority.  To help maintain a good balance when meeting digital customers where they are — in social media — we bring you the AEIOU’s.

Digital customers function in the realm of information overload with access to your business in real time.  Word of mouth is not only between friends but syndicated across the globe whether you’re local or not.  When we started DryerBuzz.com in 2002, we launched as a hyper-local website to feature Atlanta.  Coming from one of the first live Internet morning shows, little did we know the world would follow us.  Atlanta being an international hub, EVERYBODY was one day coming to Atlanta.  We became a source for information on Atlanta. Thus while “social media” is relative new to some, we’ve been connected to the world socially for a decade and more.

When fans of the site talk about DryerBuzz.com, they reference reputation and how we are known for getting the story out NOW. There is also our length of time in the game as pioneers in online media.  This being our reputation, we have to continue to live up to it. But those are our constant consonants  Here is a bit of hindsight in what we call the AEIOU’s of Social Media:

A.

In our book “a” was for authority.  However, after an early morning “teachable moment” with Star Jones (@StarJonesEsq) after watching an interview she gave to Black Enterprise’s Our World hosted by Marc Lamont Hill, “a” now stands for “appearance.” One can have authority, but if it appears one does not, then it affects the business reputation. Feedback in social media is instant and reputations can change from moment to moment.  Just yesterday, we thought one way about Star Jones and today we think another.  Be in control of your appearance.  On the flip side, social media can give a larger than life appearance.  Anyone can become their own celebrity or expert.  What’s listed in a profile becomes the persona for which the person has to then prove.

Social Media Is Nothing Without Influence | 7 Steps to Create Buzz and Build Influence | Learn.DryerBuzz.com

May 3, 2011

Buzz is what you say or do communicated to others by someone who said you did it. It’s a viral conversation with you as the topic spread with contagion. If there is a cure for this, you don’t want (sung in Diana Ross voice).

Buzz is word of mouth. It’s your story accelerating from peer to peer, friend to friend, from sea to shinning sea. Before word of mouth begins, the story has to start somewhere. But where? Where should you launch your buzz?

In social media, you are your media. But social media is nothing (in Katt Wiliams voice), it’s nothing without influence.  Media is all about influence. Therefore social media is about connecting to influence and the most influential. Social media is the tool to get the most influential people to say you did it, said it, created it and so on. You’ll recognize influencers because they come with offers.  They often ask “what can I do to help you?”

What time is it? Time to do one thing! | Hindsight | DryerBuzz.com

March 13, 2011

Staring at the blank page. Its Sunday. Cant get to the habits of the day. Green pants on the sofa bothering me. A task incomplete from Saturday looms. Went with the shirt and jacket to the cleaners. Why are the pants still here? The cleaners was closed. So what did I do with the shirt and jacket. Finding them has become my Sunday. Cleaning them has become my Monday. The task won’t be complete now until Wednesday. My day to sleep in gone. Not my jacket, shirt, nor pants.

“So your question?” I hear the moderator say to the audience member rambling on like me as I type. They at their book festival. Me in my bed still. Under the covers. Papers and books all around from research that went into the night. Only a line or two on the page from the release I need to write. Which quote should i use? Who once said it best? How can i improve upon it? What problem will it solve? What i need to say conflicts with what I want to say. That happens often.

Work for an hourly wage. Go to another country and live there. Be curious about the world. The final thoughts from the three authors on the panel respectfully as the program on TV ends. Great advice. Good thing because I can’t get that time back either.

No more multitasking for me. Do one thing. Do it well. Get it right. Going to the cleaners on the way to the get fresh fruit didn’t work. Also forgot the sugar so the lemonade is a little tart. The dog attacked the wood near the fireplace. This being the second weekend of gorgeous 70 degree weather. The wood should have been put away. The dog should have slept his arse outside. My Sunday spent picking up the pieces. Tickets to the theatre  in my pocket.

“What time is it?” is the question of the day.

Parenting: Preparing Offsprings for the Love You Will Need In Return | Hindsight | DryerBuzz.com

February 13, 2011

Sorry if I’m sharing this message after the fact.   Unfortunately, it just hit me 20 plus years in.  Am I able to share it because as a parent, I may have gotten more things right than wrong.

It seems to me that we spend the rest of our lives as adults trying to either escape or duplicate our childhood. That familiar thing about raising our own children, is our childhood coming back haunt or guide us.  What we come to know about parenting comes from the trial and error experiences of our own parents which means success is a gamble.  The payout is hopefully receiving love in return.  Parents get out what they put in.  We have to stay in it to win it and play for the Jackpot!

What got me thinking this way?  Went with my cousin Wanda, formerly known as the “merry-go-round-assassin” from our childhood,  to see Broke-ology starring Afemo Omilami, Eric Little, Enoch King and Jasmine Guy.

In the play  — Dad (Afemo Omilami) remains in his home even as his health and his neighborhood are deteriorating. When the question is raised of how to take care of their ailing father, the two brothers (Eric Little, Enoch King) find themselves strangely at odds. This comic drama encourages us to stay linked to our roots no matter where life takes us. (Photo via Jasmine Guy – Facebook)

The play had a number of interesting dynamics, twists and turns.  What stuck out to me was the pay-it-forward facet which happens between parents and off-springs.  There was also a great story between the siblings. This dynamic reign parallel to my own children with respect to the responsibility and roles children assume in returning a parent’s love.  During the talk-back which took place after the play.  It hit me – parenting is preparing off-springs for the love we will need in return.

What a revelation.  Before having children, thought I had some idea about parenting.  Knew what I wanted to do as a parent and what was important to me.  But guess what?  Offsprings soon and very soon develop their own opinions about who we should be as parents. It’s a cycle requiring expectations of both parent and child(ren) be met.  Not to frighten anyone,  but when a parent says to an offspring, “because I say so,”  be mindful, one day they will have the say.  And that’s putting it mildly.

Children are who they are born to be.  Children are a combination of not one but two childhoods; that of both parents. Parents can treat them the same (so they think),  give them the same (so they think) and still children come out different. If like me, you have more than one, here’s hoping  the first born understands there are things parents don’t know when they came along.  It’s not that parents treat younger siblings different.  Parents just learn not to make the same mistakes.  With an only child, parents only get one shot.  My parents had one child.  I decided I wanted better odds.  So I had four and hit the jackpot (knock on wood).

Prepare your offsprings for a life time of love in return.

Five (5) Tips For Introducing and Networking Your Business Online | Lead with Opportunity | Learn.DryerBuzz.com

January 28, 2011

When networking online you may run into more people who do what you do than customers. These new friends and colleagues can still help grow your business when you lead with opportunity.

  1. Digital customers can and will make instant comparisons with your competition. Do you have a better price? Better site? Easier checkout?
  2. Digital customers are more attracted and impulsively react to “discount codes.” They more often share a discount, thus creating buzz about your business.
  3. Add a shopping cart layer beyond PayPal. Shopping carts not only make checkout easier, carts help build and maintain relationships with customers. A shopping cart will help you stay in contact, offer discounts, incentivise referrals and better manage inventory. The proper cart will increase your business beyond the limits of PayPal and tells your customer you’re more than an amateur.
  4. Your network can increase your net worth. Present your business to networking groups as an “opportunity,” rather than individually sales. What is the incentive for a group to help generate leads? WIIFM (what’s in it for me?) If a “friend” sends 4 customers, what’s is offered in return? Lead with “opportunity.” Shopping carts range from free to $5 and up.
  5. Partner with bloggers in your network. Turn a picture into more purchases. When selling online, make a 125 x125 or 300 x250 logo or product image available to bloggers with incentivised referrals and watch your business grow grow grow.

When networking online lead with “Opportunity!” The sales will come!
