What is Leadership? | Learn.DryerBuzz.com
July 10, 2011
True leadership is wisdom with a reach or following. One could say that leadership is a state of accomplishment in something that others have tried or want to attempt. There is always someone at the top, out front, or willing to take the lead. A leader might exude leadership because they have more confidence. It takes confidence to stand out in the crowd or boldly represent this or that issue. Leadership is a conscience heard above the noise causing a person to act or do more. Leadership is finding, presenting, and sharing opportunities. Leadership is accepting responsibility.
Leadership can be right or wrong, negative or positive. Leadership is influence. Leadership is issue oriented. It’s following is targeted. Leadership is accountable. Leadership is focused.
Leadership Skills
- Attentive Listening
- Needs Assessments
- Coaching
- Communication
- Development
- Team Management
- Ability to advance ideas
- Approachable
- Empowering
- Task Delegation
You might possess leadership skills if you feel the need to act when you see something is wrong; if you feel the overwhelming need to speak when others are quiet; or stay when others leave. You might be a leader if you:
- find yourself with a following
- are often quoted
- are often recommended or nominated
- if friends or family turn to you
- if your opinion is often sought
- if others emulate you
Some take leadership seriously or consider it a calling though some lead their following astray. Leadership is highly sought after. Millions are looking or it everyday. There are conferences month after month trying to show you how to find leadership inside yourself, on your team, or in that thing you love and desire to be or do. Leadership is YOU whether you become it or support it.

AEIOU’s of Social Media | Learn.DryerBuzz.com
June 5, 2011
Like parenting, with social media, if you put too much emphasis on becoming friends you could lose authority. To help maintain a good balance when meeting digital customers where they are — in social media — we bring you the AEIOU’s.
Digital customers function in the realm of information overload with access to your business in real time. Word of mouth is not only between friends but syndicated across the globe whether you’re local or not. When we started DryerBuzz.com in 2002, we launched as a hyper-local website to feature Atlanta. Coming from one of the first live Internet morning shows, little did we know the world would follow us. Atlanta being an international hub, EVERYBODY was one day coming to Atlanta. We became a source for information on Atlanta. Thus while “social media” is relative new to some, we’ve been connected to the world socially for a decade and more.
When fans of the site talk about DryerBuzz.com, they reference reputation and how we are known for getting the story out NOW. There is also our length of time in the game as pioneers in online media. This being our reputation, we have to continue to live up to it. But those are our constant consonants Here is a bit of hindsight in what we call the AEIOU’s of Social Media:
A.
In our book “a” was for authority. However, after an early morning “teachable moment” with Star Jones (@StarJonesEsq) after watching an interview she gave to Black Enterprise’s Our World hosted by Marc Lamont Hill, “a” now stands for “appearance.” One can have authority, but if it appears one does not, then it affects the business reputation. Feedback in social media is instant and reputations can change from moment to moment. Just yesterday, we thought one way about Star Jones and today we think another. Be in control of your appearance. On the flip side, social media can give a larger than life appearance. Anyone can become their own celebrity or expert. What’s listed in a profile becomes the persona for which the person has to then prove.

Hair She Goes! Tory’s Stories | A Blog Saga | One Day at a Time | Episode 2: Date Night
May 18, 2011
Episode 2: Date Night — Sheila gave Tory the side eye while Sims excused himself to bring the car around. Once the door closed behind him, Sheila quipped ”don’t act like ya’ll weren’t about to get busy up in here. I hope this is not my office.” Tory and Sheila laughed and in unison said “file room.”
Sheila is Tory’s attorney and new best friend. She used to be Greg Banks attorney when he and Tory divorced. However the two found themselves on the same side of the table when it came to collecting money from Banks. He sure could hide a dime. However, being his former attorney, Sheila knew just where he hid it. Greg wasn’t smart enough to pay his attorney fees thus retain client privileges thereby making enemies out of both his lawyer and his ex. The two somehow became friends after the battle was won.
Sheila dropped by the office for the last signatures to finalize Tory’s deal with the angel investors. This was it. “Are you ready to sign your life away?” Sheila asked Tory. “Girl don’t put it like that. I rebuke that devil. This is my new beginning. And if it’s not a good deal, I’ll just sue your ass and get my life back.” They laugh again. “Let’s get down stairs. Sims and I have some unfinished business.” Tory exclaimed. “See that’s just nasty.” Sheila said snatching up the papers. “Your mind needs to be on your work.” She added. “I got this.” Tory said while cutting off the lights and locking up her new office.
Tory knew how to separate business from personal. Time with Sims was time for them. But when it came to work, Tory knew how to keep it one hundred. She only had a couple more days to get the office online. It seemed everything was ready for transition. Soon and very soon it would be time to roll the first of many products down the line. There were new authors to sign and the first of many MeVents to come. Lucky for her, the investors were silent partners and only wanted to see the bottom line at the end of the quarter. MeVents was still her baby.
Downstairs Sims was waiting. He still had that look in his eye. Life was good when a man had no drama. Sims came to her carefree with no serious baggage. Not like the first time when they had a whole lot of life and drama going on. From their first experience, Tory learned to speak out into the universe often and be very specific as to what kind of relationship and man she wanted. As usual, God laughed at her plan and sent her a better man.
Like Tory, Sims was an empty nester. Meaning there were no kids with drama mama’s attached. This was their second life. A time when two people had to have something substantial in common to survive. There were no distractions. Life and love had to be in sync. Every moment was about how the two related to each other. Of course they had equal time apart. With no small children, each had thrown themselves into advancing their careers. They started life on similar paths. Setting out with high school and college sweethearts. But realized along the way that perhaps they started too early. As Tory often said in her podcast, “hindsight is 20/20 but life lessons kick ass along the way.” Good thing they were both able to bounce back and keep it moving.
It was such a beautiful night, Tory and Sims decided to grab dinner and enjoy the mid week concert downtown in City Park. At exactly 7PM they turned off all technology for the hour and enjoyed each other in the best moments of the show. If anything needed to be said about their day, this was time to do it. Tory instituted the rule because “no time to talk” had been a chief complaint the first time around when they dated years ago. Sims reserved his right to institute a few rules of his own like the “mind reader clause” which states “if it hasn’t been said then its only in your head.” Meaning he was not expected to read Tory’s mind and thoughts should be shared.
They were enjoying the concert so that they forgot to turn their phones on again. For once Tory’s mind was on something else beside opening the office. Sims was crunching something else besides numbers. Life was good… until guess who walks right in front of them. It was Sim’s brother walking with another! Sims looked at Tory and she back at him. Seeing what Sims was thinking, she quieted him before he could speak. And just like that, Charlie and his date continued their stroll through the park.
Just then Tory thought, “oh hell yeah, this is just too much for one day.”

Hair She Goes! Tory's Stories | A Blog Saga | One Day at a Time
Day 1: A Second Life — Tory Lane Banks sat alone in the middle of the floor. In the midst of fresh paint she wondered if she had chosen the right build-out for the new reception area. Tory looked from one corner office to the next taking in the view. Not just the view of each office, but the view from the 10th floor. She chuckled as the choir in her head began singing “Moving on Up” from the sitcom The Jeffersons. Tory chose the 10th floor because it provided a nice view of the skyline. Ten stories was also all she could walk if she ever had to leave the building in a hurry.
Tory was the female Tyler Perry when it came to capturing an audience. She had the Midas touch of turning relationships into revenue. Her audience was highly sought after and brands were beating down the door to jump on the band wagon. While the money was good, she made sure to keep it real and not sell off her audience to the highest bidder. She knew what her audience wanted but more important what they needed. Partnering with Tory meant that companies had to come with both.
She sat smiling enjoying the excitement of her new accomplishment. At the same time she felt the anxiety of taking such a great leap of faith. Before now, life had been what she wanted to do when she wanted to do it. Now she had people counting on her to get it done. Tory was the new boss with a hell of a business plan. At least that is what of a group of angel investors thought after meeting her at the entrepreneurs conference. Tory attended the conference hoping to learn about taking her business to the next level. There she took advantage of a chance meeting. A great pitch landed her in front of one of the top startup gurus. After studying Tory’s plan, he encircled her with the cream of the crop in business coaches. Tory had the plan to re-invent the wheel known as advertising.
Twelve months later, just a week from the next conference, Tory and three others were to be up and running. Their ventures would be celebrated at the conference. Tory’s business would be a hybrid between advertising and multimedia. Her events had become so popular and generated such revenue that they required year round planning. With an empty nest after twenty plus years of being mommy, it was time to move from the dinning room to the boardroom. This was the second life everybody talked about after being young mothers. This was the time to get “smoking” that Oprah had mention a zillion shows ago.
By morning, Tory would be in business. An assistant was coming to start a new job. Her company name on the directory board downstairs. A receptionist would be answering the phones. Part of her team moving from virtual to in-house. No more conference calls in her pajamas. She had an office to go to each morning. She had a new a studio from which she would conduct her weekly show as well as create spots for clients. This was it. Was she moving too fast? Had she moved fast enough?
Just then Tory’s phone and tablet chimed with a simultaneous message “I’m coming up.” Sims was in the lobby. As if her heart wasn’t racing fast enough, now she had butterflies in stomach. Sims always did that to her. Their relationship was still new but Sims fit right into her busy life. Himself busy with corporate tax season, finally he would get to see why Tory was so occupied. Tory liked her relationship with Sims. They didn’t require each other but they so desired each other. She didn’t have to explain her past nor did she have to worry about the future. They tried to keep up with each other, but this was the time of year when date nights were on hold. As Sims walked through the door, his cologne filling the suite, Tory remembered just how long it had been.
Tory thought, “this is just too much for one day.”

Social Media Is Nothing Without Influence | 7 Steps to Create Buzz and Build Influence | Learn.DryerBuzz.com
May 3, 2011
Buzz is what you say or do communicated to others by someone who said you did it. It’s a viral conversation with you as the topic spread with contagion. If there is a cure for this, you don’t want (sung in Diana Ross voice).
Buzz is word of mouth. It’s your story accelerating from peer to peer, friend to friend, from sea to shinning sea. Before word of mouth begins, the story has to start somewhere. But where? Where should you launch your buzz?
In social media, you are your media. But social media is nothing (in Katt Wiliams voice), it’s nothing without influence. Media is all about influence. Therefore social media is about connecting to influence and the most influential. Social media is the tool to get the most influential people to say you did it, said it, created it and so on. You’ll recognize influencers because they come with offers. They often ask “what can I do to help you?”
