Presidents Don’t Know What They Don’t Know – Hush Mongrels: It’s Beer Summit Day (July 30) – Follow the Buzz
July 30, 2010
No I did not watch the President on The View. Two streets over from Main Street and a paycheck from middle class, was else where at the original air date and time – a place called work – i.e. the 2nd Job. Judging by the trending topic #mongrel, we decided to save the viewing for a later historic date. All that aside it is Beer Summit Day 2010. Having already predicted President Obama would insert foot by Beer Summit Day (July 30th) there was nothing to it but to do it. And do it he did. In avoiding Beer Summit Day, the President is visiting “The Great Beer State” of Michigan to check on the great bailout of the auto industry. Presidents don’t know what they don’t know.
Hush mongrels. Grab a beer. You’ll find its a great cure for #ObamaFootMouth as it was for #BushFootMouth (when he could form a sentence). One good thing the President did say a year ago, “it is a time for us to listen to each other.” I will add, #race is the one aspect we may not have in common, but there are millions that we do. I love man. . . (could be the beer talking).

The Buzz Behind the Buzz on #mongrel
The president appeared on ABC’s morning talk show “The View” Thursday, where he talked about the forced resignation of Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod, his experience with race and his roots. When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white mother, Obama said of African-Americans: “We are sort of a mongrel people.” — Put the quote back in context and read more at thehill.com
More Buzz Behind the Buzz
Were Barack Obama to make explicit his multi-racial identity (his mother was caucasian and his dad was black), he could personify the leading edge of what America will become, and thus serve innately as a leader. That is to say, he will have led through his person–as a symbol personified–as the a sign of things to come. The USA is finally becoming a real melting pot, transcending “black vs. white.” Nature’s integration will solve the artificial problem of racism far more than any government program or even a US President who identifies himself with one “side.” Put quote back in context and read more via Transcending Dichotomies: The First Multiracial US President | euandus3.wordpress.com

Essence Hires White Fashion Director
As it relates to the buzz about recent new hires and transitions at Essence Magazine. My comment is this . . .
In “post-racial America,” as alluded to in one article, it is is my belief that you do need a Black perspective . . . and a “white” perspective et al. I am hopeful that Essence is broadening its direction because of the lifestyle women have in common whereas skin color is the only thing they don’t.
In essence, this could be numbers driven. Perhaps 60% (if not more) of black female consumers do not consider race in how they decide to spend their money or consider “Black” in the lifestyle they wish to acquire. The 10 to 30% that do, does not make for a profitable demographic for such a large magazine. It is what it is if you keep it real. The question being, is Essence trying to find their true essence and transcending race? Aren’t we all?

Avoiding Beer Summit Day (July 30th): President Barack Obama to appear on ABC’s ‘The View’ on Thursday July 29th
July 26, 2010
Is this an effort for the President to avoid Beer Summit Day (July 30th). . .
Beer Summit Day (July 30th) represents “an opportunity for us to listen to each other,” to quote President Barack Obama. Instead he plans to talk to us through a TV talk show the day before Beer Summit Day and before he visits “the Great Beer State” of Michigan to check up on the great bailout of the auto industry.
In making the announcement on Monday, executive producers Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie said this marks the first time a sitting U.S. president has visited a daytime talk show.
They said the majority of the hour will be devoted to Obama’s appearance, which will touch on topics including jobs, the economy, the Gulf oil spill and family life inside the White House. It is scheduled to tape on Wednesday.
If you miss it, you can catch full episodes of The View via their website. Grab a beer early, then watch and tweet with us Thursday evening July 29th (those of us two streets over from main street have to work).

Van Jones on “the venal nature of Washington politics in the Internet era” – Shirley Sherrod and Me – NYTimes.com
July 25, 2010
Van Jones writes . . .
Our situations aren’t exactly the same. Ms. Sherrod’s comments, in which she, a black woman, appeared to admit to racial discrimination against a white couple, were taken far out of context, while I truly did use a vulgarity.
But the way we were treated is strikingly similar, and it reveals a lot about the venal nature of Washington politics in the Internet era. In my case, the media rushed to judgment so quickly that I was never able to make clear that the group put my name on its Web site without my permission. The group finally admitted that it never had my signature, but by then it was too late.
Fortunately, Ms. Sherrod has been offered a new job. But our stories offer cautionary tales to anyone interested in taking a job in national politics.

To Avoid Beer Summit Day – Pres @BarackObama to visit Chrysler GM in Michigan (dubbed The Great Beer State)
July 25, 2010
Beer Summit Day July 30 “An opportunity for us to listen to each other.” to quote President Barack Obama
JULY 30: Mugs of beer were consumed by U.S. President Barack Obama, Vice President Biden, Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley and Harvard University Professor Henry Louis Gates (whom Crowley arrested causing national attention) sit on a table in the Rose
“Last year, the president made a surprise appearance at a briefing to add…ress reporters regarding the controversy surrounding the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., even though White House officials had said he wouldn’t speak publicly about it.” reported by CNN
The President refused to do the same this year in an effort to distance himself from the growing controversy over Shirley Sherrod. However, the President did later speak with Sherrod.
We believe the President is open for change. While his schedule shows the President will travel to Michigan to visit Chrysler and General Motors Plants in Detroit and Hamtramck. Michigan has been dubbed “The Great Beer State,” according to the Michigan Brewers Guild in an article posted on the National Geographic Intelligent Travel. http://bit.ly/9HkksD
So here’s hoping the President will grab a cold one with America on July 30th. Let’s make diversity easier to swallow. Cheers!

White House Responds to “Buzzing” Request for 2010 Beer Summit: Tells CNN “No beer summit for Sherrod” | Race to Judgment Continues
July 21, 2010
White House aides said Wednesday they do not expect President Obama to call Shirley Sherrod, the black former USDA employee who resigned after a video clip of her discussing a white farmer surfaced earlier this week.
Obama also likely will not show up to explain things at a White House briefing, as he did during the controversy surrounding the arrest of professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. last year.
“No more beer summits here,” one aide said. After Gates’ arrest, Obama, Gates and police Sgt. James Crowley met at the White House for beers.

July 21, 2010
It won’t be your ordinary press briefing from the White House. Some questions need answering where it relates to Shirley Sherrod, the former Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the USDA forced to resign in a game of politics. Who is Shirley Sherrod? – get your twitter/facebook as we have to keep it moving as time is of the essence as we wait.
Will Sherrod be reinstated? Will heads roll? Will media be revamped? Will the White House respond with a 2010 Beer Summit?
All eyes are on Wednesday’s regularly scheduled Briefing by Press Secretary Robert Gibbs July 21, 2010 1:00 PM EDT.
Watch it live with player below or visit the White House web for on-demand.
Excerpt from Transcript – Please note this is an excerpt, follow the buzz to read the full transcript.
Q The Secretary said that — and told CNN yesterday he did not, himself, speak to anybody inside the White House, but there are thousands of people who work at the Agriculture Department.
MR. GIBBS: Right, and as I said to Ben earlier, I know of no conversations that have happened like that, as the Secretary said.
Q So no one at the White House urged her –
MR. GIBBS: Ed, I answered your question.
Jake.
Q Apparently she’s watching this briefing, Shirley Sherrod, on CNN right now. Is there anything you want to say to her? (Laughter.)
Q We know where she is. (Laughter.)
Q I’m being quite serious. She’s watching –
MR. GIBBS: No, no, I understand –
Q She’s watching you.
MR. GIBBS: And let me — the Secretary is trying to reach her. I hope that the Secretary reaches her soon and they have an opportunity to talk. The Secretary will apologize for the actions that have taken place over the past 24 to 36 hours, and on behalf of the administration, I offer our apologies.
Again, this is more directed at everybody writ large here. I think everybody has to go back — we have, we will continue to — and look at what has happened over the past 24 to 36 hours, and ask ourselves how we got into this. How did we get into — how did we not ask the right questions? How did you all not ask the right questions? How did other people not ask the right questions — and go from there.
Q Well, I asked the right questions. I actually called her before we reported on this to find out what her end of the story is, so you can fault the media if you want but –
MR. GIBBS: No, no, I’m not faulting the media, Jake, but I — no, no, hold on. I’m not here to fault the media. I apologize on behalf of the administration. I will say a number of people called quite quickly after these comments aired and wanted to know what our response was. I don’t know who else called. I don’t know who made calls trying to seek a greater understanding. We made a mistake on that and I think many involved in this made mistakes on it.
Q I’ve heard conservatives and liberals say this administration overreacted because you’re afraid of conservative commentators. Do you think there’s any truth to that? MR. GIBBS: No.
